Sherer loses job 1 week after sparring with South Lake Tahoe City Council

South Lake Tahoe Community Services Director Stan Sherer was fired Monday.

“It’s kind of a shocker. I really can’t talk about it,” Sherer told Lake Tahoe News the night of July 23.

Sherer came on board with the city in January 2011 to lead the Parks and Recreation Department. During consolidation because of budget shortfalls his job responsibilities increased, department title was changed, as was his job title. And his department was reduced in staffing significantly.

He was verbally chastised by the City Council as last week’s meeting regarding a long-term contract he approved without the electeds knowledge.

Asked if that was why the city let him go, Sherer said no. However, the first inkling he had that there was trouble was when he met July 20 with City Manager Nancy Kerry. He would not divulge the details of that conversation.

Kerry, when reached July 23, was tight-lipped as well.

“His employment with the city was terminated effective today,” Kerry told Lake Tahoe News. She would not elaborate because it’s a personnel matter.

Sherer had come to South Lake Tahoe from Sparks, where he had worked in that city’s rec department for 16 years.

“I really wanted to make a difference up there,” Sherer said. “I appreciated my time there and wish I had more time to make a difference.”

Good luck, Stan. There are better jobs out there.

Well I refer you to my posts on the lease story! Hopefully the City will now work to right his wrongs?!

Anyone who won’t comment on a situation like this is being given a termination package that the taxpayers would not agree to.

Stan, I’m sorry this happened. It was ALWAYS great working with you on the Parks and Recreation Commission.

    To Parker:

The Unity lease issue is, as mentioned before, ‘customary’ (meaning it’s probably legal under City protocol). . . if the City Council didn’t know that, it is their fault, not his – Mr. Sherer is an asset – this is strictly (im)pure petty politics.

‘Chewing out’ last week was sufficient, and within their purview. . . I will now refer you to my post with re: the difference between the Unity deal and the Ice Rink. . .and once again ask:
    who’s going to correct City Council’s wrongs ? . . .

    I.E., spending $ 10 million to get 5MM !

“Tight-lipped” or not, the City needs to be more forthright. . .as in ‘transparent’; are they answerable for themselves or not ?

Is he the only dept. head to be fired ever?

  7. Parker says - Posted: July 24, 2012

To satori: I make no judgement on the Unity Lease. Just curious if the termination was for that or where I know Mr. Sherer pulled some shenanigans. And that’s with a Lakeview Commons’ lease!

Mr.Sherer was able to get a full market rental value for the senior center. Too bad he wasn’t involved in the ice rink deal. His crime was making the city council look lame, which is not hard to do these days.

Rest assured, the city’s taxpayers came out on the short end of this.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the City fired him to distance themselves from their own mistakes with the recs department.
