Warm room to open for South Tahoe’s homeless

image_pdfimage_print

Starting Dec. 18 homeless people in South Lake Tahoe will have a place to sleep other than the outdoors.

The shelter will be open from 7pm to 7am, December to April. It is located at 981 Silver Dollar
Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

There will be 20 beds. Those staying will receive prepackaged foods and hot beverages. The warm room will also provide the adult men and women with information and resource referrals to help them find more permanent housing solutions.

Anyone interested in volunteering may attend the following training sessions:
● Jan. 9 10am -12:30pm
● Jan. 12 1-3:30pm
● Jan. 12 6-8:30pm.

Donations are also needed. Checks should be made out to Live Violence Free (the fiscal sponsor for Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless), with “Warm Room” in the memo, and mailed to Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, P.O. Box 13514, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96151.

Whatever you subsidize, you will have more of.

  3. x local says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Lake Tahoe is not a place for the homeless. You better get a bigger place, 20 beds won’t be enough. By the way, who is paying for this ???

  4. Liberule says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Marisa Muscat needs to be tarred and feathered. I can’t WAIT to see the amazing things the cops have to respond to at this “warming shelter”. Drug use, theft, fights etc will be common place. I doubt it will last past one season. Volunteers will quickly tire of the vermin and no one will be there to supervise. Disaster. I feel awful for anyone that lives in that neighborhood. Bring them into YOUR house Marisa. This town does NOT want this.

  5. Liberule says - Posted: December 14, 2015

And Linda, have a great time. I’m sure you couldn’t be doing anything better with your time than enabling druggy losers. Offer the people at the “warming shelter” a job. Then listen as the excuses start pouring out. BS.

uh oh. slippery slope is engaged; this bad idea will eventually cost tax payers dearly.

  7. Sam says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Librude, how dare you attack someone like that. You are the one that should be tarred and feathered. This town does want this. You speak for your self when you say that. I live in that neighborhood, and I’m glad to see it.

Many people are one paycheck away from being homeless in this town. People who are hard workers, who have families. Don’t forget that you heartless twit.

  8. Kits Carson says - Posted: December 14, 2015

They are already asking for money. What a surprise.

  9. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 14, 2015

It’s great to see that these people will have somewhere to go and yes this town needs this shelter and probably more. I would hope that the hours could be expanded on bad snow days.

It’s also good to see the trolls on this site with their usual negative comments, instead of coming up with an alternative and ways to pay for it, just trash the good people trying to help the less fortunate in our community. It’s good to know that caring for your fellow man, brings out the worst, in some people, on this site.

Have you ever helped at bread and broth on more than one occasion? Before you say I take in the homeless, I have, more than a few times. They were just people down on their luck, from medical bills, they’re not druggies or drunks. Why do you all stereotype the people you think you know???

A little compassion goes a long way.

Sam, this topic always brings out the most hateful finger pointers that live in this town, some of the most hateful dont even live here but seem to blab their venom the loudest. I hope these lice find out personally what it is like to be cold, hungry, homeless and in a hateful town that throws their s#)t in their direction. Cole in their stockings, the lot of them…

Dr. Muscat is an example of what is good in a human being. She has chosen to use her many talents and education for the betterment of her community, instead of selfishly chasing the big bucks for herself-this kind of person with altruistic goals in life is unacceptable to the soulless trolls that relentlessly demean anyone who is not all out for themselves-I salute Dr. Muscat’s efforts and the trolls should worry about their Karmic deficits

Shame on you Liburule ,I just wish once in awhile I can here from you Positive ,I am feeling so sorry for you, Oh by the way,If you have nothing else better to say, We welcome you to help the homeless, maybe your heart will change.

  14. Kits Carson says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Instead of encouraging the same behavior why don’t you start a “Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless to Get a Job”. What a novel idea!

  15. 4-mer-usmc says - Posted: December 14, 2015

“They are already asking for money. What a surprise.”

This is not a government operated entity that is requesting donations but rather a non-profit organization. Individuals not wanting to make a donation don’t have to do so.

Happy whatever you celebrate in recognition of the human spirit, and may you reap what you sow.

    Spouse – 4-mer-usmc

  16. fromform says - Posted: December 14, 2015

non-profit organization? then it is subsidized. this is not a place to attract more homeless to the ‘poverty with a view’ scam group. there are warmer places to winter and collect benefits.

  19. 4-mer-usmc says - Posted: December 14, 2015

    fromform:

Non-profit organizations are not generally subsidized by government entities using taxpayer dollars, and the Coalition for the Homeless is not a government subsidized organization that operates with taxpayer dollars. Funding for non-profits is usually derived from fund-raising efforts to the public or by applying for grants from grant making organizations. The federal and state level governments sometimes offer the opportunity to submit grant applications but those funds are usually project related and not service related. The Coalition for the Homeless is more along the lines of the Angora Fire Fund/Community Disaster Relief Center that was established after the Angora Fire to accept donations from the public and then assist individuals who met their criteria.

Where does “Grant” money come from??

  21. nature bats last says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Maybe you should do some “not foxnoise” research, wrongula, and learn for yourself what resources grant money includes. There are many different sources of financial support, government(tax) supported dollars being only one type and usually not the most common source. There are actual people out tbere who have donated millions and even billions of their own dollars towards the good of humanity. I doubt they are your types of People tho…

  22. 4-mer-usmc says - Posted: December 14, 2015

    Nature:

Most private grantmaking organizations are foundations and most people would be very surprised to learn just how many grantmaking organizations there are. The Council on Foundations and The Foundation Center are two places to get information on grantmaking organizations, and many corporations also have grantmaking divisions in their organizations because the tax benefits of doing so are extremely lucrative while they can simultaneously be altruistic.

  23. Jamie says - Posted: December 14, 2015

Grants very commonly come from private foundations, funded by donations by private citizens. Great examples – the Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the J. Paul Getty Trust, Hewlett, Mellon, Carnegie, etc…if you’d like a list of some of the largest, this is a great resource: http://foundationcenter.org/findfunders/topfunders/top100assets.html

This is the Christmas season folks. Let’s keep in mind that Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, were homeless (according to the Christmas story). This is the season when we are invited to be just a bit more generous, with our time and resources, to our fellow human beings. This is the time of year when we are invited to judge less and love more. I am proud of the Warm Room project and all the caring people who have brought this project into fruition. I have attended the volunteer training and many of the concerns that the skeptics have expressed (i.e. drug abuse, fights, crime, etc) are being addressed and rules will be enforced to make the Warm Room a safe place for all who need it. There but for the grace of God go any of us. Happy holidays to all and to all a warm night.

So I got hit up by a bum for money this morning outside a strip mall. I told him if he was hungry I’d be glad to buy him a sandwich. But no He didn’t want food. . He only would take money.
    Bums sure are picky.

There is definitely a need for a warm room in Tahoe. Talk to the people that volunteer for Bread and Broth and they will tell there is a need for a warm shelter. Regarding pan handling, there is a elderly man who is a vet and has sign that reads he has been ill and needs help. He has been pan handling here in South Lake Tahoe and Carson City for the past four years. He sits in on walker that has a seat. He likes working the Al Tahoe post office. He told me that on a good day he makes $150 there. He said he has been having some problems working Costco and Walmart in Carson City because a man saw him in Bodine’s gambling and has been giving him a hard time. He also works Raley’s at the Crescent V and Safeway. I asked why he has been pan handling here for the past four years and he said it is to supplement his social security as he does not receive much. He said he pan handled in Placerville before moving here, but Tahoe has been very good to him.

Billy, you calling me a liar?
Happened yesterday morning in front of Gardnerville Grocery Outlet.
I used to always carry McDonald’s gift cards to give. Most people took them, one was so excited, he was like a kid. It was a lovely thing to see. But no, I refuse to give money. Encouraging people to stay dependent does not help them in any way.
What do YOU do for needy people, you self-righteous little humanoid?

  33. copper says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Your first mistake was shopping at Gardnerville Grocery Outlet.

Of course, that was his mistake as well.

  34. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 15, 2015

I understand you keep making my point. I also understand these people who you all call bums are not that, they are human beings. I understand that people have circumstances beyond their control and can end up homeless. I also understand that people need help no matter what their situation or where in the world they end up. I understand, just because you don’t think they “Belong here” doesn’t mean they deserve any less help. I understand this is the season to help the less fortunate. I understand how to respect everyone. Lastly I understand if I want to be taken seriously, instead of being a troll, to spell correctly, and not be negative on every response. I understand you have offered nothing in form of solutions, just criticizing.

  35. TeaTotal says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Dog-you’ve told that same ‘story’ here in the past-I think you used Raleys as the back-drop in one of the previous renditions

  36. Robin Smith says - Posted: December 15, 2015

You people talk out of both sides of your mouth ALL the time.

You see pan handlers behind all the stores all the time.

They are the unfortunate as well as the criminal. It’s difficult to tell one from the other and unfortunately Not all are safe to be around.

They shop at Grocery Outlet, and apparently shopping at a ratty place like that deserves a snarky comment from the people that make comments here.

  37. My Thoughts says - Posted: December 15, 2015

The National Coalition for American Veterans says that 11% of homeless people are Veterans. That’s 47,725 Veterans that you Trolls are calling bums. I don’t think that anyone who would put their life on the line for this country should be called a bum. They are Hero’s in my mind and we should treat them with respect.

  38. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Being unfortunate does not make you a criminal. Come down to bread and broth and see the people who really need help. I think you won’t be afraid of the pan handlers anymore or worried you can’t tell the difference between the two.

  39. Robin Smith says - Posted: December 15, 2015

So go smack yourself for lying. Again.

  42. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 15, 2015

    Robin,
I think we all know that you are a master at stating the obvious. the majority are not criminals. It’s not a reason to stop helping everyone.

Like I said, come down to Bread and Broth, more than one Monday. I’ll meet you there it’s only about 2 1/2-3 hours of easy, good work. If That’s too much, ,make a donation. I’ll match you, or anyone on this site dollar for dollar to either Bread and Broth or the Homeless Coalition in donations. I’ll start with $20.

  43. Liberule says - Posted: December 15, 2015

I was actually just talking to my buddy who is sltpd. He told me the police are ecstatic for the warming room. He said many homeless are wanted in connection with crimes. Since they are homeless it’s hard to find and arrest them. This warming room will give them a central location to find the slime and arrest them. Never looked at it that way. Hooray for free handouts!

  44. Robin Smith says - Posted: December 15, 2015

BTW you’re getting off the subject.

  46. Robin Smith says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Fish…Liberule has a point…criminals are rounded up in your warming rooms…a place where the cops can find them.

How’s that for back on subject?

  47. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Maybe $10. donation would be easier for you?

  48. copper says - Posted: December 15, 2015

Lib, I think you’ve fallen afoul of a bit of cop humor. It’s hard to imagine a beat cop ecstatic over discovering a gathering of homeless where he (she) can spend their shift serving warrants on them.

In the first place, few homeless have warrants, in part because they don’t commit many serious crimes, but also because they are contacted by cops so often as they go about their daily business that any active warrants get served pretty rapidly. Also, most warrants on homeless are of the “don’t come back to my town or you’re getting served and going to jail” variety, and no cop enjoys dealing with some other jurisdiction’s imagined problems.

But lastly, cops view their patrol cars as their home/office on wheels and no one wants to alter the ambiance of home for eight hours by filling the back seat with a guy who’s spent the last six months in the woods, doing whatever it is that a bear does there.

  49. Robin Smith says - Posted: December 15, 2015

“Sea Of Love” Al Pacino movie with Ellen Barkin, He plays a cop and one of his lines is…

“I’m a pig until something goes wrong, then I’m everbody’s daddy.”

He also uses the ruse of giving away ball game tickets as a way to ‘gather’ criminals to arrest. So warm rooms and free food is not too far a stretch.

Copper- your comment is ridiculous. Cops won’t arrest homeless people because they smell bad? Come on bud. You have to be smarter than THAT.

Homeless don’t commit serious crimes? So the homeless man who robbed a teenager at gunpoint 2 weeks ago behind the motel 6 isn’t a serious crime? What are you smoking? Must be good.

Homeless people don’t have warrants? You really are ignorant huh?

My police buddy was not joking in the slightest. He told me they even had meetings about the “warming room”.

Yes. They are happy they can easily find some of them. Crazy I know.

Bigfishy1- What’s your hang up with B&B? Is this your personal ‘do your alms in secret” place? I’ve spent more than 1 Monday there and it is not all pretty and feel good. My point? Find some other way to pick a fight over ways to do good. All the volunteering in the world doesn’t make up for caring for the person in front of you- right now- in this moment. It’s called compassion. What a concept.

  55. BigFishy1 says - Posted: December 16, 2015

ISEE, I don’t need you to lecture me on my projects. My hang up is I’m trying to get people to help the less fortunate. I don’t need you or anyone to pick my fights for me, just help out and start making a positive impact on our town.
Did I ever say it was all good and pretty? NO! I said there are good people who need help. You must need help in understanding and interpreting basic english. Once again I will match you dollar for dollar to EITHER group.

If me suggesting people help others is difficult for you, just don’t comment.
Maybe you haven’t noticed I don’t feel the need to comment on almost every article like you. Hmmm …

Good point Bud. I mean, who would Jesus kick out of a warm room homeless shelter in Tahoe… in winter?

  59. WalkingMom says - Posted: December 19, 2015

I’m sure that even your precious Jesus would have an issue housing someone willing to rob a teenager at gunpoint. Especially in a place where there are potentially going to be children. Keeping this population warm is nothing more than a way for you arrogant people to feel all fuzzy while you watch your kids open their piles of garbage this Christmas. Does absolutely zero to help them. I haven’t seen a single one of you willing to offer a job to any of them. The best way we can help the homeless population in Tahoe is to help them get out of here. The cold isn’t even the issue, the economy here is.

  61. rock4tahoe says - Posted: December 19, 2015

Wow WalkingMom, “The best way we can help the homeless population in Tahoe is to help them get out of here.” Like on a one way bus trip? And you talk trash about arrogance and fuzzy?

“Give to everyone who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” Jesus. He had issues indeed.

  62. nature bats last says - Posted: December 19, 2015

Walkingmom, you act as tho you know every person that has made a post on this topic. How the he// do you know whether anyone here has hired one of these individuals, or contributed in any way to the warming room? Are you clearvoient? The fact remains that if we, as a community, can look beyond our own door and extend any amount of compassion to someone less fortunate than ourselves, regardless of their circumstances, than we can truly be a community that cares. If you want to sling your venom like dogzilla, kitty litter, justanass and their ilk, well go for it. Thats a segment of society ill steer clear of at all costs. Im sure our paths wont cross at the christmas cheer drop off locations. A lump of coal for you, while your kids open their piles of garbage…

  66. nature bats last says - Posted: December 19, 2015

  67. WalkingMom says - Posted: December 19, 2015

The problem is that no one is giving them anything other than a warm night. Not a single person is trying to find a way to solve the job or lack of low income housing problem we have in Tahoe. There is very little chance of actually getting ahead here. It’s not trying to get them out of Tahoe, but to an area with more employment and housing options. As someone who actually has spent time homeless, I believe I am more qualified than most to comment. Without handouts and insulting false hope like this, I was forced to get my **** together. It took moving across the state, but well worth it. Be honest and admit that this is not solving anything other than your conscience issues.

    1 John 3:
17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

  72. hmmm... says - Posted: December 20, 2015

@WalkingMom…the issues that you mentioned are part of a larger issue and while I do agree they need to be addressed, I am reminded of that smarmy Starfish story. The one about the big storm at the sea’s edge, with tens of thousands of starfish beached above the high tide mark, and the conversation two people walking from opposite directions have when they meet.

    Do you know that story?

  73. WalkingMom says - Posted: December 20, 2015

I do know that story. As such, I gladly donate my time and resources to many causes. I just find it insulting that so much time/effort/resources are spent on projects like this. If every one of you “Christians” would take a homeless person into your home, and then focus these efforts on the real problems, something could actually be accomplished. As someone who has spent time homeless in Tahoe, in the winter, I can promise you a warming room was the last of my concerns. I was simply intelligent enough to leave for brighter shores. I now own a home here, and happily drive off the hill to work. The REAL homeless, those with families, disabilities and real hardships deserve so much better than this. They also deserve to be told the truth, that this is not the place to get ahead, and not catered to for your ignorant or selfish reasons. There are simply not enough resources here for people, and while we waste time on projects like this, there never will be.

I think this is beautiful I spend time talking to many of these people!! Because they are people like me and you! They have amazing stories and smiles to share they are down on their luck! They have kids, grandkids, kids even in college! Stereotyping is ignorant and shallow and simply rude! I will sleep better knowing at least some of these people will be off the streets on these cold nights! And as for the comments made about drinking and fights COME ON its the freaking holidays it will be just like many of you and your families Inside the warmth of your own homes!
JESUS loved the leppers, the lame, the sick and the weak!
Next time you see a homeless person and you think to yourself ” hey bum get a job” I hope that you will stop that thought look up and atleast give that person a smile and if your feeling the true meaning of the season give them food, share a joke or ask them how their day is! Their kindness might surprise you!!

Walkingmom, the warming room isnt meant to solve the problems you are focusing on, its meant to provide a temporary place for the less fortunate to get in out of the cold, maybe have a shower, get warm, eat a meal. Thus its called a WARMING ROOM. And, yes, the volunteers can provide the people with resources that might help them to find help down the road. How can this be a bad thing? If you are insulted by the community reaching out to folks that might benefit than I hope you are seeking some councelling, maybe a visit to the warming room might provide you with some resources to help you. Maybe you just like being mean…

Misty: take your Jesus BS somewhere else. The only Jesus I know lives in bijou and works at montbleu.

  78. Liberule says - Posted: December 21, 2015

I bet my butt not ONE of the people on here screaming about Jesus will ever spend more than one day at the warming shelter. If that. Karma is gonna eat you alive.

I have seen this before. The housing in the area next to this place will go down in value.

I know a better free warming room, it’s called San Diego, CA.

Lib….We are neither amazed or amused by the ‘pristine clarity’ of your grasp of economics and social issues(muffled throat clearing cough…hmff-BS-fffhth, hrmmmph) and how they impact the ‘individual’. We have decided to award you the Ivan Boesky/Gordon Gecko Prize for 2015. Ayn Rand and Ebenezer Scrooge will be presenting. The event will be catered by Idi Amin and Jeffrey Daumer. Entertainment provided by the Donner Party Interpretative Dance Troup.

    Congratulations. Bon appetite’.

The funds taken from this community are a zero net sum game. The needs seem to be endless. I belong to two community service organizations and have witnessed the growing demand on resources.

When people give time and money to a new project something else in town suffers. What should the town give-up for this?

  85. Liberule says - Posted: December 24, 2015

Hmmmm: that was rather pathetic. Good one kiddo.

http://www.chaseinternational.com/real_estate/ca/south_lake_tahoe/971_981_silver_dollar_ave/70-1-121759/ The location got an extensive remodel after the MLK 3-day big freeze of 2007 when nobody bothered to leave warm faucets dripping to prevent freezing pipes. Since the County is on the hook for the lease until 2019, I’d recommend that Barton Auxiliary come up with a few bucks to tear down 1120 3rd Street and re-build on the lot, to turn it into a year round facility for Mental Health department, food bank, and free hot meals during winter. The lot is HUGE. The Barton Auxiliary could lease the office space to EDCMH, and that alone could pay the freight for the homeless and food kitchen costs. By occupying the 981 Silver Dollar location, they are just asking for another substantial rehab of the building after the bedbugs, fleas, and lice move in during winter.

Robin I can’t believe they are going to allow a 3.5 million dollar building to be torn apart the way it will look after this winter. You can take the denizens out of the forest but you can’t take the forest out of the denizens. There are other sites EDC is paying to rent that are vacant as well but none off the beaten path like Silver Dollar and 3rd Street.
