El Dorado County is going to try to field a grand jury for 2013-14 after this year’s had to be disbanded because so many jurors walked out.

Applicants must be Untied States citizens, at least 18 years of age, have resided in the county for at least one year at the time of the swearing-in date, and cannot hold an elected office.

Jurors serve for a period of one year commencing July 1.

The El Dorado Civil Grand Jury is an investigatory body created for the protection of society and the enforcement of the law. It is an arm of the court and a representative of the public.

Meetings are compensated at the maximum rate of $15 per day of meeting; mileage is compensated at the rate payable to employees of El Dorado County for each mile actually and necessarily traveled for purposes of said sessions or committee work. No other compensation is provided.

• Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation’s Celebration of Education is May 15 from 4:30-6pm at Lakeland Village’s Lakeshore Pavilion.

The Lake Tahoe Choir and Lake Tahoe Community College Chorus present Disney Dazzle featuring favorite Disney songs, with special guests the Children’s Honor Choir.

The shows are May 3 at 7pm at LTCC’s Duke Theatre and May 5 at 2pm at MontBleu in Stateline.

Tickets are $10 adults, and $8 students and seniors.

George Runner will host a teleconference townhall on May 7 at 6pm regarding the confusing and controversial fire prevention fee.

The tele-townhall is co-sponsored by state Sen. Ted Gaines and Assemblymembers Frank Bigelow and Beth Gaines and is part of a series of regional townhalls Board of Equalization Member Runner is having for taxpayers in his district.

Taxpayers in Alpine, Amador, Calaveras and El Dorado counties are specifically invited to participate in the May 7 teleconference event, but others are welcome to join the call as well.

During the call, Runner and other participating elected officials will discuss the latest fire “fee” news, including the lawsuit and pending legislation, and answer questions from callers.

South Lake Tahoe police Detective Nick Carlquist and Lt. David Stevenson will be at the senior center May 10 to talk about phone and Internet scams.

The discussion will be during the 5:30pm potluck.

On July 3 (always the day before Independence Day) the Kings Beach skies will shine with a fireworks display and a beach party in honor of the birthday of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

New for 2013, a fun Beach Party starting at 2pm on the North Tahoe Event Center deck includes a DJ, live music, dunk tank, food, beer garden, vendors, watermelon eating, sand castle building and patriotic costume contests and more. Beach party proceeds are a fundraiser for the fireworks.

At approximately 9:30pm the skies light up with a dazzling fireworks display, free to the public. Bring a beach chair or blanket to view the fireworks.

Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike or take public transportation to the event.

The 4th annual Police Memorial Week Parade is May 4 at noon.

The only such event known to take place in the West, pays tribute to officers killed in the line of duty while celebrating professional law enforcement.

The Silver State National Peace Officers Museum is proud to present our parade in Virginia City. Law enforcement from three states will gather there to pay tribute to their fellow officers who have had their lives taken from them while protecting all of us. They will gather to celebrate a profession like no other; an honorable and very necessary but dangerous life mission. Bagpipers, honor guards, vintage emergency vehicles, mounted officers, and law enforcement from hundreds of miles away.
