El Dorado County is going to have a grand jury for 2013-14.

This is the time of year when the annual grand jury report is usually released. But there won’t be one because the grand jury fell apart earlier this year.

This coming grand jury will be under the leadership of El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Doug Phimister. They operate from July 1-June 30.

The grand jury members are:

Wilbur D. May Museum is hosting an art workshop just for kids during Reno’s Artown.

Volunteers from the Sierra Watercolor Society will help kids create watercolor masterpieces. Each child will complete two paintings – one of which will be matted and ready to frame.

This free class is open to ages 6-12, but it is limited to 50 children. Reservations are required.

The Art Angels Workshop is July 11 from 1:30–3:30pm at the museum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra Street, Reno.

The education system is facing rapid, dramatic changes at the state and federal levels. What do the new standards mean for students, teachers, parents, and the nation?

A presentation at Sierra Nevada College will explore the similarities and differences between Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, focusing primarily on NGSS.

The presenters are Rick Pomeroy from UC Davis School of Education who teaches science and technology to in-service and pre-service teachers and David T. Crowther, a professor of science education at UNR.

The talk is July 17 at 6pm, Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village. Donation of $5 is suggested.

There will be a meeting about broadband on June 24 from 6:30-7:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex in the Aspen Room.

This meeting will focus on the broadband needs of businesses and residence in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers area. Local Internet service providers will describe their services.

The meeting is being put on by the Gold Country Broadband Consortium, which is one of 14 regional consortia in the state funded by the California Advanced Services Fund Rural and Urban Regional Broadband Consortia grant program to leverage regional, state and national resources as an investment in improving and expanding broadband access.

The goal of the consortium is to provide choices for affordable Internet service. In order to do that, the GCBC is in the process of mapping out demand by rural homeowners, neighborhoods and business owners and conducting community meetings.

The GCBC needs the assistance of rural residents and businesses by taking a speed test and sending the results to russ@sedcorp.biz, with a physical street address, to be included in the mapping process.

To conduct the speed test, go online. This website is used to record the results of all speed tests and reported to the CPUC. The goal is to get service to those who don’t have it and to upgrade service that doesn’t meet the state standard of 6 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up.

Tahoe Keepers is having an appreciation event for registered Tahoe Keepers at the Live at Lakeview summer music series June 27 from 4:30-8:30pm.

The first 75 Tahoe Keepers to check in will receive a voucher to Lakeview Café.

Tahoe Keepers is a free self-inspection and decontamination training program that provides paddlers and hand launched watercraft users with the information they need to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species. The program was launched in the summer 2011 and now there are more than 900 trained and registered Keepers.

At the June 27 event, the Tahoe Keepers booth will provide access to the video and quiz so unregistered paddlers can become Tahoe Keepers and participate in the appreciation event. Staff from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, and the League to Save Lake Tahoe will be on hand to assist paddlers with the registration process.

• The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association has named Mammoth Mountain as an official training ground for U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding, including spring and fall camps for U.S. athletes through 2019 including Olympics in Sochi and PyeongChang.

• Indian Hills resident Shahla Fadaie recently purchased the Mr. Ice Cream truck and started a new business, Shahlala Healthy Ice Cream Rush. She is serving the same Douglas County route as the previous owner with a new ‘50s theme. Fadaie will introduce two of her custom ice cream flavors at the Casino Fandango Food Truck Festival on June 29 from noon-5pm.

Money raised goes to the American Cancer Socity. The ACS gives out gas cards locally and supplies wigs to nearby cancer centers.

The ACS is the largest private donor to cancer research.
