Tahoe homeless facility not progressing

Another winter has gone by and still there is no place for the homeless in South Lake Tahoe to seek shelter.
Frustration is beginning to show among those who keep meeting to talk about establishing a warming room in South Lake Tahoe. Without nonprofit status, it is impossible to apply for grants that would help fund such an endeavor. The group doesn’t want to form its own nonprofit and no entity has come forward to volunteer to be the umbrella under which the warming room proponents could function.
“We need to get buy-in from the people we want to serve. We need a vision of what we want to create,” Marissa Muscat with Barton Hospital and Live Violence Free said.
Representatives from Catholic Charities in Reno spoke to the group March 24 about what they offer and some of the realities of such an endeavor.
They were quick to say that the talking can go on forever and encouraged the Tahoe folks to jump in, start small and go from there.
Thirty-seven families with kids going to school in Lake Tahoe Unified School District are living in non-traditional housing. Thirty-eight homeless people were identified in the January count; a nationwide effort by the federal government to document this class of people. Throughout El Dorado County there were 247 homeless people counted that day. In the Truckee-Tahoe City area there were 51 people.
It was pointed out that not everyone wants out of this way of life. The Reno women shared how one veteran was given a studio apartment. When he was shown it he turned it down, instead preferring to be at the shelter.
Mental illness is one of the largest barriers to get people to change their habits.
“It’s surprising how many of these people have income who are staying in a combination of these shelters,” Anne Schiller, chief clinical officer for Catholic Charities, said.
Their overflow shelter, which operates during the cold weather months, costs $24,000 a month to operate. It is equally split between Catholic Charities, the city of Reno and Washoe County.
Men and women are allowed – no kids, no pets. A mattress is provided for a few, but mostly they sleep on mats that resemble insulate pads for backpacking. One is lined up after the other. There is no privacy. But they are out of the cold. Most nights the 100 mattresses are spoken for.
This is more than most warm rooms provide. Typically they are just a building out of the cold where homeless must sleep on the floor or stay up all night.
Linens are changed twice a week, a deep cleaning occurs once a week and spraying for things like lice and bed bugs happens once a week.
The hours are from 7pm to 7am. Bed checks and perimeter checks are done regularly.
Once a week case management is provided to help these people get services they need and to apply for aid they qualify for.
This facility is in addition to the regular shelter Catholic Charities runs.
“We’ve tried different things and they have not worked that well,” Schiller said. “Before this facility we tried local hotels.”
The problem was it was not in a great location, no staff was on-site to deal with issues and there was a lot of property damage.
For now, the Tahoe group is going to keep meeting, brainstorm and try to find a nonprofit to essentially be the fiscal agent.

They rather live behind motel 6. But hey, at least they shoot their meth out of view of the public an clean up all their trash.
If this country is less than 5% of the planet population, and generates decade after decade about 25% of the planets wealth,…..
If you think last season was bad with panhandling I’m guessing this season will be double. Warm weather brings nothing but trouble.
You know why? In a shelter the women and children are seperated from the men,I knew a lady that was raped by a man that jumped over the fence and she had her 2 children by her side on the bed and she screamed,The next morning when it was time for line up for breakfast ,she pointed the man out and he was arrested, These places are not safe.True story, I understand why they sleep out side in hidden places. Its sad.Thats why it is safer in hidden places.
Who came up with the term ‘non- traditional housing”? Sounds like something from a Barton Exec. Let’s say it like it is. Under a bridge. In a box. In the meadow under the willows. Next to any stream or river. In the entry of any open building. Let’s talk about the reality of homelessness instead of hiding it behind catchy phrases and made-up words.
If we build a facility that houses 400 homeless in a short time it would be full.
We have survived this long without a shelter in the City. I see no reason to build one now. There are more important needs to address in Tahoe.
PS
Who is the genius who thought of installing the Wells Fargo ATM on the backside of the “Y” shopping center next to the beggars?
I would think there I are some examples of how homeless issues can effectively be dealt with and I am sure we could figure it out. To close your eyes and let people in need fall through the cracks is unacceptable.
i advocate for no tax dollars (ex. ‘grants’) being spent on these ‘warming shelters’
I hope these phony xtians never have a catastrophic negative curveball thrown their way in life. Please don’t put your hand out when you azzholes need some help to survive.
It saddens me that I share a town with such cold, heartless, selfish people. Blaming the poor seems to be the theme. “There for the grace of God go I, Brother’s keeper”. Where are the Christian values so many of you espouse?
Tahoe Homeless, It can happen to anybody. Getting fired from your job (Harrahs, Harveys?, school district?,the city of SLT? Barton hospital?) or having hours cut and before you know it, you’re out on the street living in a motel room or in the meadow with a sleeping bag going to the local charitible pantries giving away donated food from those who have enough to give.
It’s easy for many to turn their backs on those who have fallen on hard times. It’s all about me,me,me!!!
Wait till the shoe falls on the other foot. That homeless person could be you.!!!! OUCH!!!
Take care of yourself and others,OLS
Just an idea, but how bout we bring back mental institutions. Also instead of prison for drug abusers we have rehab centers. Than these homeless shelters would be filled with folks that truly are down on their luck. Dont ever give money to a beggar, they are just gonna buy drugs and booze with it. Give them food, clothes, advice, a job, but never money, you arent doing them any favors.
Granted, there are many people who really have a serious need, but a lot of these homeless choose to be homeless. They could get a job and get their life back on track, but instead, they keep collecting welfare, because they don’t want to work. A panhandler can make up to $35 per hour just sitting on the side of the road with a sign. That’s a lot easier than picking up trash in the McDonald’s parking lot. Their problems are really self-imposed and if they could get their lazy arses in gear and try to get a job, they would be just fine.
I remember a true story about a group of homeless people panhandling with signs that said “will work for food.” Well, this contractor comes up an offers them all a job, and they decline saying “we can make more money doing this.”
There is a big difference between these bums and the people who are truly in need, and willing to work to fix their situation. What we need is some sort of filter to prevent the scammers from getting anything, but help out the people who are truly in need.
And if you want to call me “cold, heartless, selfish,” I think you’re wrong. I am giving the scammers what they deserve, nothing, thereby leaving MORE aid available for the people who really need it. I care about the people who’ve got real problems, not the lazy good-for-nothings just looking for free money.
greengrass
If you build it they will come. No thanks. Total BS about having your hours cut and all the sudden your homeless. It comes from a lifetime of poor decision making, crime and drug abuse. If you don’t have a home, don’t live in an alpine mountain environment. Pretty simple. OLS you’re always bleeding your heart for these poor souls. How about you invite them into YOUR home? Didn’t think so.
Yes, if you keep feeding the trolls, they will never leave nor feed themselves.
Most choose the life because their drugs and alcohol are more important. The ones that are REALLY in need, live in a shelter for a short period of time. They get jobs, they save for a place to rent and move on. The lazy ones deserve what they get….and choose it. No compassion here for those. And YES, pretty simple…..don’t live in the high sierras and expect it not to be cold. Pack up your crap and move on.
OLS: You are a good hearted person for sure, but are you willing to take the Troll(s) into your own roost? Most whine about how we don’t care enough for these homeless addicts and drunks, but I have yet to see a story where ANY bleeding heart lib has taken any of them in. Just saying.
GA. and I have never seen a story where a jack a$$ tea party republitard has taken in a homeless or Down in their luck person, just saying…either pay it forward or dont, its a personal choice. I for sure wont give money to the guy at the post office with the sign that says. Homeless, just do it…as he fishes out another cigarette, but the young woman got lunch on me last week. Randon acts of kindness do alot for a persons spirit.OLS, keep on being kind, its a virtue.
From some of the comments here it looks like you don’t help people when they need it most. The old guy next door who needs a jump for his dead car battery? The heck with him! The single mom who could use an armload of firewood on a cold night?Just tell her no. Let her her and her kids get cold on a chilly Tahoe night!
Quite an uncaring bunch here. Don’t give people a hand up, just ignore them and then kick them when they are down. Nice folks, Have a good life, OLS
OLS, stop being enraged. I never said anything like that. I was merely pointing out that we should NOT help the people who don’t need it. I am all for helping those who truly need it.
OLS I agree with greengrass…in that if a single mom in a house needs an arm load of fire wood, I would give her several. I would even start her evening fire for her. I’m talking about the lazy standing around Raley’s for a free hand out, then see her (pimp) other half drive up and get what she has panhandled from ignorant liberals. If it makes you feel good to give lazy people free money then by all means, keep encouraging the behavior, and take your self righteousness to your dinner table. Or better yet…TAKE THE LAZY INTO YOUR HOME. You point fingers, but have you taken the lazy in?
We do need to help those who have fallen on hard times. Mental illness, high unemployment, working at a place that pays an unlivable wage because that’s all you can find, substance abuse, abusive relationships with violent outcomes, lack of affordable housing…
Yes, I have taken folks in who were on a bit of a rough go of things. They’d get up early and be happy to have a roof over their head and a place to shave and shower. Maybe find a job! Help me with a little yardwork in return for some shelter and a safe place to sleep.
Makes me sound strange to some because I try to help those that need it the most. Take care, OLS
I guess I’m one of the heartless haters. All I do is try to help the truly needy and children in town. I see a big difference between the old woman needing firewood and the beggars at Rayley’s.
By the way before plastic bags were banned, I picked much of the trash the homeless and high school kids threw all around lower Gardner Mountain.
The troll trash is out in full for this story…karma is gonna get a few of you mean people, when you least expect it….be ready cuz you might find yourselves being on a corner with your hand out. A$$ h@/€$…
OLS, I think you’re not seeing that we actually agree. I am all for helping people who need it, but I’m not for giving handouts to people who are just looking for endless free money. Try it for yourself! Offer a few of the chronic panhandlers a job cleaning your yard for a bit of money. Most of them will decline. Why? Because they can make more money panhandling!
I think we should help people who have fallen on hard times, as long as they’re actually trying to set their life strait. The one’s that are just leeching off everyone else are not really in need. Also, we should remember that free handouts are not always the best way to help someone.
Nature, I do not consider myself mean. I think by refusing help to lazy leeches, I am actually helping them. It sort of tells them that they need to work to get their lives back on track, ultimately helping them. It’s like spanking your kids. The kids think it’s mean but in the end, they are better off for it because they learn that whatever they are being punished for is wrong. When it comes to helping people who really need it, I consider myself generous.
Oh, and if I was ever homeless, I would do everything in my power to NOT be dependent on other people, instead of just sitting around living of other people’s money.
It seems like some of you are trying to attack my character just because I am conservative. There is really nothing to attack here. If you disagree with me, you either believe in encouraging laziness, or you believe in denying help to people in need. Start reading my posts more carefully before you call me a heartless mean bully.
P.S. Nature, your censored word was almost a joke. It was practically not even censored. Please scramble up those characters more next time.
well then it’s settled. OLS had agreed to have the warming shelter In His home. Honestly your logic is complete junk. The man who needs a battery jump vs. the meth addict In The meadow stealing your car battery. Totally relatable.
If I were homeless I would get even the most menial of jobs and rebuild myself. However I’ve made good life choices, got an education and planned for my future instead of depending on hand outs. Maybe these bums should try it.
It was meant to be obvious so simpletons could get it. :)
Sheez…such vitriol and vile name calling is what these conversations end up being? I am ashamed to live beside those who lack the imagination and compassion to imagine the reality and the downward spiral that takes most of these folks to their homeless state.
Many are just families struggling to get by on minimum wage limited hours jobs.
Kae, can you please inform us as to who is active on the community on this issue. I don’t give a whit about the naysayers from Reno. There are plenty of examples out there who have taken his issue head on with success. Perhaps highlight some of those.
K9 you spearhead this issue and take them into YOUR home. Also, take a walk into the meadows of trolls and see if you can talk a good talk to them. Watch out for the needles, pipes and better wear gloves if you shake hands. I dare you to put your money where your liberal mouth is.
“Many are just families struggling to get by on minimum wage limited hours jobs.” Obviously, help out these ones, but what I’m concerned about are the lazy trolls with self-imposed problems and no incentive to improve, just looking for a handout. These guys can keep on living in the gutter as far as I’m concerned. I guess I’m just a mean-hearted, cold, careless person because I save my money for the ones who really need it, and try not to encourage the leeches to continue leeching. Go figure…
greengrass
Thumbs up to you Grengrass.
I came to Tahoe broke with 3 kids, one who had a disability. I left a bad marriage, sold most everything I had, worked graveyard shift and most of the time had 2 jobs, but I afforded rent & daycare & didn’t take a dime in ‘goodies’. It can be done and anyone living on the street in Tahoe is doing it because they can live in a beautiful place with zero accountability. Don’t waste my time whining about living in a place with such cold hearted people- the folks who inhabit Tahoe are some of the most hardworking and high principled people I’ve met. It’s not like any of you whiners are going to home a homeless person now is it?
Ponderosa, you are correct. The whining libs want things done and blame conservatives for not caring. Like you, I have yet to read about ANY…..even ONE whining lib taking a homeless troll in.
I give you full marks for what you have accomplished moving here.
Bravo, Ponderosa. Admirable indeed.
Today I was reading an article about how Hawaii’s homeless population is completely out of control. Hawaii is one of THE most liberal states of the 50. Extremely high taxes, TONS of social programs, and most people either work for government or in the tourist industry. Sound familiar? The only difference is, Hawaii’s climate is much more conducive to homelessness, and they provide an incredible amount of support to those folks.
The more you feed, the the less responsibility you require, the more wastrels you will will have.
It’s too bad that so many people refuse to help others. Do some take advatage of others generosity?
Yes! Just look at Exxon Mobil, Bank of America, Boeing and so many other of the wealthiest companies in the world that pay no income tax AND are subsidized by the govt. with your taxpayer dollars. Those are the real leeches!
If someone is panhadling in front of a store consider the differences between a large corporation making billions in profit and not paying into the system while stealing your taxpayer money and the poor bloke asking for spare change in front of Raleys. Who’s the biggest rip off? Follow the money. OLS
Ponderosa-What year was that?-it certainly was not in this century-if you say you feed, clothe, pay rent and pay for childcare for yourself and 3 children in Tahoe nowadays with no assistance-I’m calling BS
OLS, I also hate the symbiotic relationships between our government and the big corporations. It is heinous. But those corporations could not do what they do without government protection. Maybe if we’d rein in govt a bit, this could all stop?
That said, I wouldn’t call Exxon Mobil or Boeing, or many of the others “leeches”. After all, at least they do provide a service or a product.
What do the panhandlers provide??
OLS: We are talking about homeless panhandlers too lazy to get any job. They make a choice and you sympathize with them. I’m still waiting for your answer to another blogger…. whether or not you are willing to take some of these trolls into your own home. I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t but don’t be hypocritical and blame those who see them for the lazy insects they are.
Still waiting for your answer…..
People are insects? How rude, You must be the biggest insect in Lake Tahoe.
tea total, you are competely wrong. It is possible for a single lady working a full time with a part time to raise 3 children in Tahoe. I know a few. my 21 year old nephew makes $15 an hour at starbucks(with tips). A waiteress can make above $100 a shift in tips plus wages, which would be qabove $20 a hour, much untaxed. If they work an additional 20 hours a week with half the tips they would gross over $55k a year. It is completely possible to live on this income.
Ponderosa, you can’t say it better than that. You are 100% correct. If someone is really trying and willing to work hard, they can overcome their poverty. I would definitely help someone doing what you did, but I’m not going to waste my money on some bum who is just looking for more free handouts.
“The only difference is, Hawaii’s climate is much more conducive to homelessness” I would argue with this. The temperatures are more suitable, but it rains at least every other day. Not a good climate to be homeless in.
OLS, you are trying to make the homeless leeches look better with your comparison to the big corporations. Just because the corporations might be leeching worse, it still doesn’t make the trolls innocent. All I’m saying is let’s not waste our time and money on people who don’t need it, and instead give it to the truly needy. But I guess I’m just a mean-hearted person, I “refuse” to help people out. Actually, I think my strategy works better than yours. I save my money for people who really need it; you waste most of it on trolls. I withhold my money from leeches, discouraging them from leeching; you give it to them encouraging them to keep it up.
I think it’s better not to give to the leeches, because that will send them the message that leeching is not OK, and they need to find a job. Save the money for people who are really desperate. OLS, if you really want to help the trolls, find them a job! Let them clean up your yard! Instead of a “warming shelter” why don’t we start a program for these people to clean up the forest, or pick up trash on the beaches and roads? It’s a win-win. They make some money to get their life back on track, we get cleaner beaches! Why are all these programs about free handouts? Handouts are fine in the short term, but long term handouts make leeches. Why are we always doing the worst things possible for the homeless? The bottom line is, they need help to become self-sufficient, not help that makes them dependent on others. Oh well, I guess I’m just cruel and cold because I want the best thing for these guys. Well, that’s what you get on the internet. Some people will say anything when they’re anonymously commenting on some website. Disgusting.
greengrass
Reloman-how much does 24/7 childcare for 3 children cost in your 55K/yr.(what a joke) fantasy single mother world cost-as usual-delusional BS-and greengrass $!$ ahem-you have never lived in the real world because you’re a teenage bloviator
” I also hate the symbiotic relationships between our government and the big corporations.”
And also support the Citizens United decision…
Linda: You’re right….insects at least provide some usefulness.
Out of context, as usual, Prunes. My point those many months ago was that if UNIONS are permitted to contribute funds to political campaigns, so should corporations. You can’t allow one and not the other.
They’re both spending other people’s money for political favor. Heck, we let government employees vote, and it’s certainly in THEIR best interest to vote for more and stronger government, isn’t it?
It’s ALL a conflict of interest if you ask me.
http://reason.com/archives/2015/03/30/cut-corporate-welfare
Yes , there are some panhandlers that are too lazy to get a job. How do we define who needs help for real because of job loss , medical bills or caring for an aging relative causing loss of income, and those that find it easier to take advantage of others by not working at all because that’s their choice?
Hard to draw the line. When I moved on to this street 41 years ago everybody around me was older and retired. Some were having a tough go of things.
Homeless? No, just seniors trying to get by, but on a real tight budget living on limited savings and meager social security payments.
Were they out there begging? No, but they did take advantage of all the social services available.
I helped them as best I could…and they helped me.
Yes I have taken people in who were not doing so well. I recently evicted some folks who had lost their jobs and became way behind in rent altho they seem to have money to party around the clock. So I’ve seen both sides of this issue.
Do I want to help those that are legitmately on hard times? Of course! Do some folks become used to using people and Govt. agencies? Of course!
It all comes down to useing your best judgment and going with your gut feeling in helping indivduals or various organizations. OLS
Citizens United decision: great idea or terrible idea?
Haha, tea total it is obvious you don’t know any single mothers in town. That MUST MEAN we have no single mothers. If you believe that iI wonder where the delusion is. Since when does someone who.works 40 to 60 hrs a week need 168 hours of day care. Single mothers have been finding ways to do this since the 60s(or earlier), my mother did with 5 children as a waitress. I have a friend in LA who does this and rent is much more expensive there than here
Duke, personnaly i think it is a terrible idea. I think that only people wwho can vote in a election should be able to contribute to canidates. NO MONEY from corps(non or for profit) unions or pacs. Get the money out of it. Grass roots donations. Let the people speak not the special interest on either side.
Citizens United decision: great idea or terrible idea?
Great idea!!! It gave me even one more reason to cut the cable. Of course it had no effect on elections. Ultimately corporations still cant vote and politicians need votes. If money mattered Obama would not be President.
reloman-I’ve known many single parent families over the years-they made it with help from friends, family and social services- not alone- and please point out all the jobs that pay a single mother w/kids $4500 a month-you can’t-you’re full of it
there are quite a few waitresses and bartenders in this town that average over a 5 day work week $150 per day in tips( not everyday but smoe days will be 75 others 250) You must not get out much in this town. Plus the $8 to $9 in wages per hour. Talk to almost any of the servers or bartenders in the casinos. Not really full of it just know more people in the industry than you. Sorry to upset your world view. This is not even taking a second job.
“Verily I say unto you, whatsoever you do unto the least of my brethren you do unto me”
Hmmmm, exactly what does a government tax-supported facility have to do with Christ’s teachings?
He NEVER suggested that government should steal from people, filter that money through layers of bureaucracy, and call it charity when they provide services. Never.
BROKEN WHEEL
“Way out on the rim of the galaxy
The gifts of the Lord lie torn
Into whose charge the gifts were given
Have made it a curse for so many to be born
This is my trouble —
These were my fathers
So how am I supposed to feel?
Way out on the rim of the broken wheel
Water of life is going to flow again
Changed from the blood of heroes and knaves
The word mercy’s going to have a new meaning
When we are judged by the children of our slaves
No adult of sound mind
Can be an innocent bystander
Trial comes before truth’s revealed
Out here on the rim of the broken wheel
You and me — we are the break in the broken wheel
Bleeding wound that will not heal
Lord, spit on our eyes so we can see
How to wake up from this tragedy
Way out on the rim of the broken wheel
Bleeding wound that will not heal
Trial comes before truth’s revealed
So how am I supposed to feel?
This is my trouble —
Can’t be an innocent bystander
In a world of pain and fire and steel
Way out on the rim of the broken wheel”
From the album ‘Inner City Front”
Hmmm. So you think showing compassion involves forcing other people to provide what you think is charitable. How about Matthew 7:3? Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
Why should you force others to provide what you do not?
But again, NONE of that has anything to do with what the government should or should not be doing.
“Hmmmm, exactly what does a government tax-supported facility have to do with Christ’s teachings?”
Nothing at all, Dogula, nothing at all.
I think you missed my point. We don’t have to ‘like the homeless, we don’t have to ‘invite them into our homes’ or was their feet or do their laundry for them….but damn….we don’t have to demonize them, call them ‘lazy’, call them ‘insects’, spit on them(metaphorically),
My comment was about the hatred and judgement heaped upon the homeless, the poor, the overly sensitive, the down and out, the addicted, the lazy, the less than perfect, the mentally ill…those who have ‘failed in their life plan’ by those posters here who have been blessed, either by luck, virtue, hard work, thievery or providence…and have forgotten that ‘there but for the grace of God go I’…or you, or them.
I think it was Frank Herbert who wrote that the hardest thing a man must do is ‘endure himself’. And that’s a knife that cuts both ways.
Thanks for your concern, I spend plenty of time struggling with my own judgmental nature, a truth that some here like to remind me of.
Hmmmm, I think we all struggle with ourselves, our consciences, our own hidden weaknesses.
But trying to cover our own failings by encouraging an overbearing and corrupt government to take from one to give to another is NOT the answer. Give to your church. Give to the Salvation Army. Give to the Food Bank. Give to organizations who are responsible and give an accounting. This government does none of that. It uses and abuses and takes from struggling workers and wastes the money. There is NO accountability there. There is no charity there. There is no love there.
‘He NEVER suggested that government should steal from people, filter that money through layers of bureaucracy, and call it charity when they provide services. Never.’
She said while conveniently leaving out how he healed people and gave away free food and booze.
God people, lay off of this crap for a while. Now your going to bring RELIGION into this? I mean, it’s relevant and all, but that’s going to start a blogtroll religion war. We’re up to 59 comments on this article now, and while your sitting behind your keyboard, there are people who really need your help out there. Take a break!
Prunes, you make my point: HE healed and He gave. He did not make others steal for Him to provide for the poor and the needy.
Important distinction.
“important distinction” for those who dumb down and buy into fairy tales.
Historical facts, ff. You can question His divinity if you choose, but He DID exist, and He did teach.
“historical facts”: i rest my case.
Now we’re talking about fictional angry sky man? Lol!
Pretty sure Jesus would tell these bums to get a job too. Or maybe he’d turn Lake Tahoe into wine. Cabernet please ;)
“To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance.”
“Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.”
Would some of you consider Buddha a lazy bum as well?
When did the Buddha demand that other people accommodate his desires?
You guys just refuse to acknowledge what is being said here. You don’t listen unless somebody says what you want to hear.
“HE healed and He gave”
And the book says we should try to be like him.
I don’t even believe in this stuff and understand it better than you do.
Dogula, where in my comment, the only one I’ve made on this thread, did I “demand that other people accommodate his desires”? All I asked is a simple question about certain people commenting on this thread and their perception of those they tend to look down upon.
And as to “refusing to acknowledge what is being said here. You don’t listen unless somebody says what you want to hear”, I think you might want to look into the mirror and make that statement.
Its called a straw-dog. Attribute ridiculous ideas to another person that they didn’t express to depict the person as ridiculous. It is amateur and intellectually lazy.
Duke,
You should not call The Dog intellectually lazy. You should not call it ignorant, brainwashed, delusional, unenlightened, paranoid, or misanthropic. It’s a Dog. It will never understand.
I’ve seen videos of dogs riding bicycles, skateboards, and surfing. Some of them have a lot of potential. In this one video, a bulldog knocks a kid off of a sled, grabs the sled, and rides it down the hill. In another video a dog goes through the automatic doors of a pet store and steals a bone. That dog is probably refuses to work, is a welfare leach and probably committing crimes to support its drug habit. When asked “who’s a good boy?” it lies, it’s a bad boy, and we should make it sleep outside until it cleans up its act, stops huffing paint, and gets a dogdamn job.
Where is the compassion?
Do people not know that the amount of jobs/work available is at the lowest in generations?
I say we bus them to SF. Like nevada did. Maybe tag them or microchip them so if they come back we can easily capture them, vaccinate them and send them back. Until then, OLS will host the warming room at his house.
What has happened to American compassion?
Where are the Christians? the pastors? the priests… ?
Mr Mustache,Please do me a favor,Please go get microchiped.
this just in: all churches provide ‘warming facilities’ for homeless as a requirement to maintain their tax-exempt status.
You all want to know why they (homeless, lazy people, drug addicts) come here to our beautiful place we all call home?? Because our county has THE highest pay for disability, Social Security, welfare in the state of California. What we REALLY need is a good, HUGE winter, where we are all sick of shoveling snow!! Thats what we need…they all are coming here because we now have mild winters. Yes, a big winter to thin out the herd is what we ALL need. GET A JOB, GET OFF UNEMPLOYMENT, STOP BUYING/SELLING/MANUFACTURING METH, STOP USING HEROIN!! LAZY BUMS…
I agree. A giant snow dump is much needed. Once a few become bumsicles maybe they’ll get a clue. Or maybe not. Homeless people aren’t usually very bright.
Tomorrow Dreams-didn’t you know that there are plenty of $1200/week jobs for single mothers or homeless people-with bar/restaurant experience-just waiting for them to apply for and get hired?-reloman will point them out for anyone interested
sno: yup
The hatred is so thick its dripping off the tahoe troll coalition. Hope you all find yourselves in their shoes at some point in your miserable hatefull lives. Its called karma and it will find you…hopefully sooner than later….
What has happened to American compassion?
Sorry nature bat. But I’ll never be behind a dumpster shooting meth and begging for money at raleys. Maybe that’s a reality for you. You could end up on heroin living in the meadows stealing from other hardworking people. But most of us are smart enough to not let that happen. Most are bums by choice or through lazy actions of their own doing. Guess you’ve never lived in a big city. You clearly don’t get it. Karma? Karma will be when you have homeless people pooping in your driveway. Nasty vermin they are.
More bad news on employment in America, record 93 million plus working aged adults are not employed, the worst % of employed people since the dismal days of Jimmy Carter. On top of that the employment reports from January and February were also revides downward…
Homelessness increases and the opportunities are gone.
Where is the compassion in this country?
Up to 85 Comments now and this is better than stand-up.
Mr Mustache, thumbs up. For a while, I was despairing that there was no one logical left in the world. Thanks man.
The rest of you libs, stop trying to make a pointless point.
@nature, you’re threats are meaningless to me, and you still don’t seem to see my distinction between the truly needy and the leeches. It is looking more and more like you are just attacking those who identify as conservatives, regardless of their views. Maybe you ought to take in some of you’re beloved trolls and I’ll take care of the people who really need help.
For everyone else, let me summarize and reiterate:
I really want the best for these people, and would like nothing more than to see them with a good job and livable wage, working as productive citizens, but I think that giving the lazy ones free money forever will never get them there, and more likely, make their situation worse.
Not all homeless are trying to improve their situation, and many are intentionally gaming the system. Call me cruel, call me mean, it does not change the fact that it is in EVERYONE’s best interest NOT to encourage this behavior.
I reiterate, I am all for helping out those in need, but I see no reason to encourage the lazy ones, and free money forever is not going to help anyone in the long term.
We need a job fair, not free handouts, drug and mental rehab facilities, not warming shelters, true compassion and desire to help in the long run, not blind financial giving forever.
Give em’ what’s going to help them in the long run instead of what seems like a good idea in the short term. For God’s sakes, people, stop being so blind! Look farther out than tomorrow afternoon! Have real compassion, not phony proud ‘I’m such a great person’ compassion. You’re not helping these people get better lives.

P.S: Forgive my rant, some of these comments are really annoying.
South Lake TAHOE NEEDS TO CHANGE THE OUTLOOK from POVERTY WITH A View. IF you can’t afford to live in a vacation town GET THE F^&%$ OUT of Tahoe your not welcome. Start with banning trailer parks in the middle of town. Doesn’t look like Incline Village has this problem.
Best Answer make SOUTH SHORE all Nevada and the rest will take care of its self..
Oh and maybe we should give I.C.E a call Too ( All you OBAMA lovers don’t agree I Know. But your the biggest problem of all..
Greengrass,I have to agree with you. I’ve tried to help some homeless in the past who have honestly needed it.I’ve also helped some who were just taking advantatage of my generosity and compassion for what I saw as a real problem… but it was a not a real situation of dire need. They did not look for work or better their situation. Some didn’t want to look for work as they had found the easy path. Free food at the local pantries and sleep on a freinds couch.
I ran the Holliday Food Drive for STR for almost 12 years, dispersing the food donated by our customers on our routes to the churches, Christmas Cheer, the Womens Center, the re-hab place and many others.
I think for the most part the donated food went to the people that truly needed it the most.
On the other hand, some people are just milking the system and taking advantage of others and wrecking it for those that REALLY need it.
A few bad apples spoil the wwhole bunch.
Take care.OLS
OLS, that’s a more reasonable position statement. i commend you for it, though it’s my observation that there are more than a “few” taking advantage of the system, to the disadvantage of those who actually need help.
