Then and now: Same building, different businesses

Constructed in the 1930s as the Bal Bijou cornering Highway 50, this building featured a dance hall. It hosted many prominent dance bands and performers into the 1950s.

By the 1970s, it had become one of the three local Inks Markets.
In the succeeding years, it housed the Liquor Barn, followed by Smart & Final. Long’s Drugs opened one of their South Shore locations there in 2004, and today it is CVS Pharmacy.

Mr. Bill, When you walked into Bijou Market, to the right was a magazine rack and that’s where the monster magazines were. A favorite of mine at the time. It’s where our family shopped for many years.

Marilyn Inks and I were in the same high school class in Sacramento, graduating in 1950. I was proud to be able to shop in her family’s store during their reign. Thanks again, Bill, for the memories.
