Safeway to pay nearly $10 mil. in hazardous waste lawsuit

OAKLAND — Safeway Inc. has agreed to pay nearly $10 million in civil penalties to settle a environmental protection lawsuit filed in Oakland alleging that the grocery store chain failed to properly dispose of hazardous waste at more than 500 California facilities over seven years.
The San Francisco and Alameda County district attorney’s offices said Alameda County Superior Court Judge Wynne Carvill approved the settlement this morning after 41 district attorneys and two city attorneys filed a complaint on Wednesday.
“This investigation touched nearly every county in California, and today’s results could not have been reached without the collaborative work of the many offices involved,” Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said in a statement.
Prosecutors alleged that Safeway sent hazardous waste including medication, aerosol cans, flammable liquids, batteries, electronic devices and other toxic materials to landfills instead of properly disposing of them.
Yet the idiots at the Keys marina go untouched. What is wrong with this town?!?!
Who gets the money? Certainly not us the customers who will end up paying it.
“The violations came to the attention of district attorney’s investigators and environmental regulators when they conducted inspections of Safeway trash receptacles in 2012 and 2013, according to Alameda County prosecutors.”

Yeah, the complaint was filed Wednesday, Safeway settled on Monday? Watch what happens to grocery prices. We’ll pay. We always pay. Some of you think it’s good that the government came down on a corporation for its misdeeds, but it’s just more games. Neither government nor corporations pay; YOU do.
Dog, just an FYI: It already happened here. Safeway along with most big businesses that operated here in town were sued over the cleanup of the Meyers Landfill (Hekpa Dump).
Yeah, Bigs, you’re right. I remember; they were basically extorting the guy who owns the pharmacy at the Y because he owns the building that used to poison that dump with dry cleaning toxins, even though he personally had nothing to do with it!
Justice doesn’t enter into it when the powers decide to go after money.
Only on the LTN website would a corporation intentionally poisoning California’s land and water be turned into a diatribe about the government. The government stopped this illegal scheme and punished the criminals engaged in the harmful acts. The government is the bad guy here? What a world.
