Grant allows SLTPD to beef up enforcement

South Lake Tahoe Police Department has been awarded a $47,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety for a yearlong program of special enforcements and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic related deaths and injuries.

After falling dramatically between 2006 and 2010, the number of people killed and injured in traffic collisions saw slight increases in 2011 and 2012.

Officers they are particularly worried about recent increases in pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities and the dangers of distracting technologies.

This grant funding will provide opportunities to combat these and other problems such as drunken and drugged driving and speeding.

Activities that the grant will fund include:

  • · Traffic safety educational presentations to include bike and pedestrian awareness
  • DUI checkpoints
  • DUI saturation patrols
  • Motorcycle safety enforcement
  • Distracted driving enforcement
  • Seat belt and child safety seat enforcement
  • Speed, red light, and stop sign enforcement
  • Compilation of DUI “Hot Sheets,” identifying worst-of-the-worst DUI offenders
  • Specialized DUI and drugged driving training such as Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Evaluator
  • Court “sting” operations to cite individuals driving from DUI court after ignoring their license suspension or revocation
  • Stakeout operations to observe the “worst-of-the-worst” repeat DUI offender probationers with suspended or revoked driver licenses.

Funding for this program is from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

How about getting rid of the Fraud trolls at Raleys entrances at the Y. Especially the blonde fraud with a stolen shopping cart and dog. She is fraudulently saying she is a victim of domestic violence. Unsuspecting fools giving her $$$ only to be collected up by her pimp. Won’t you cops please get rid of her and her kind.

That works out to $128.77 per day or after taking into account the overhead and Administrative costs for a city employee it results in about 1 hour per day for one person.

How much did the City spend to obtain the funding from the Federal Government passed through a State agency. How much did the State spend? How much did the Federal Government spend?

The total starting amount was your money. It was collected in taxes by the Federal Government and then Congress made to look like they are giving us something while in reality the gross amount was tapped to pay for Federal Employees, then State employees and finally City employees.
The result is our police force gets only pennies on your dollar.

There’s got to be a better way.

Tahoeadvocate you couldn’t be more right. Grant money is not free but it sure employs a lot of grant writers.
After seeing the long list of to does for a paltry 47 thou it is obvious the money is mostly being squander on very few actual enforcement details. I would enjoy seeing a audit after it is spent.
After the money gets washed by many government agencies only about 75 to 80% of the money paid in by taxpayers is returned to the taxpayer. Some rip off.
And so much of the officers time will be overtime pay to further reduce the grants effectiveness.

“Audits” aren’t free either. More wasted money for paper-pushers. And, we saw the “audit” of the paid-parking and it’s worthless conclusion.

It’s a worthless conclusion because you don’t like the results . I am sure there will be others in the community who would like to know how this vote cost this community millions in badly needed maintenance funds.

Slapshot, I don’t like or dislike the results. However, there was a vote, and the initiative was decided. I referred to the conclusion as “worthless” because it was based on a hypothetical. Rather than make assumptions, perhaps you can note why you think that the conclusion (or audit, for that matter) was worthwhile.

The SLTPD deserves real praise for obtaining this grant and for focusing on drunk drivers.

i believe this is not settled and will be back in a couple of years. The next time around I would anticipate the voting public will have more complete information and the vote will be a November vote not a June vote ensuring much broader participation. I doubt very much it settled.
