A snowboarder who went missing Monday night during a snowstorm near Castle Peak was alive and well Tuesday after walking his way out of the backcountry, according to Nevada County Sheriff’s Department officials.

Abraham Finkelstein, 25, a Bay Area resident, was backcountry snowboarding with his father on Monday in the Castle Peak area across Interstate 80 from Boreal Mountain Resort.

The pair started hiking up a hill toward Peter Grubb Hut when a storm moved in and the father and son were separated due to cold and snowy conditions, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department. The father was able to make it down to the family vehicle around 5pm Monday, but his son did not show up.

Very pleased Mr. Finkelstein survived his ordeal in such dangerous weather conditions, however, this is reportedly the second time he’s gotten lost in the backcountry. Perhaps he should stick to the resorts and stay in bounds as he’s seems to be not only a threat to himself but to SAR teams who are compelled to go out in the same dangerous conditions to find him. Hope they charge him for the call-out of all the men and equipment; the first time could happen to anybody, second time you ought to know better. If he’s going to persist in venturing into the backcountry they might consider fitting him with a GPS locater ankle bracelet, just to make it a little easier to find him next time.

On the up side, while looking for Mr. Finkelstein SAR happened upon two stranded snowmobilers in need of assistance, so that’s a bonus rescue. Thank you, SAR, we’re grateful for all you do!
