World Book Night is an annual celebration dedicated to spreading the love of reading, person to person. Each year on April 23, Shakespeare’s birthday, tens of thousands of people go out into their communities and give half a million free World Book Night paperbacks to light and non-readers.

A group of givers from the Friends of the South Lake Tahoe Public Library gave out 320 books to people on the beaches, at bus stops, the Food Bank truck, city recreation center, Senior Center, Juvenile Treatment Center and Tahoe Senior Plaza among other places in town.

As a Giver for World Book Night, there is no way to truly share the gratitude the recipients expressed for their new books. It was truly a magical day event.

Not every city gets to be ‘givers’. Lynne Brosch applied for the honor and the WBN organization felt South Lake Tahoe worthy.

And what an honor it was. While some people were leery of ‘free’ anything, most were so appreciative. What a great day in Tahoe.

Handing out “free books?!” Uh oh! Where are the Ayn Rand pitchfork folks denouncing this “socialist” endeavor?
