LTCC board concerned about SnowGlobe field
Before the Lake Tahoe Community College board of trustees agrees to allow SnowGlobe to return for a year or even three, worries about the field need to be put to rest.
The board at its meeting this week talked about the possibility of having the music festival return. With the college having a men and women’s soccer programs starting in the fall, the need to keep the field playable has taken on a greater urgency.
College President Kindred Murillo and South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry will be meeting next week to talk about the field. Then a presentation will be made to the college board at either the March 25 or April 8 meeting. The board would likely take action at the next meeting following the presentation.
The City Council earlier this month agreed to a three-year deal for the three-day music festival to return in late December. It has been at the community ball field for the last three years.
“There have been so many things said about the impact of SnowGlobe on our field. (The board) really wants to be clear,” Murillo told Lake Tahoe News. “The most recent articles and comments from the city are that snowload is what wears the field down faster and SnowGlobe doesn’t have that big of an impact.”
The board also wants to make sure the city has money in the bank to replace the field when that is needed in the next few years.

Really! The city didnt talk to the college about the field before giving the green light for three more years? No surprises there.

The field was destroyed by snowglobe. It was not UV rays. The college should not ask tax payers for more tax dollars to fix a field that snowglobe destroyed. The board should not let snowglobe continue. The council also wants the city logo on all advertising that snowglobe puts out. I would not want my name on an event were some young kid might die! Just another lawsuit.
Yeah, let’s tell the Snow Globe Producer to take his show and visitors to some other city/town. I mean, we don’t need a sold out show that brings in thousands of people from out of town, spending $150 per ticket and whatnot, for an organized event for New Years. We can go right back to the Riots at Stateline via Reno Satellite TV. Or, possibly, there might be some sort of compromise on this.
Who pays to replace the field, the city, collage or the bond money that paid for the turf? Oh by the way, there is a well a few yards away that pumps 1500 gallons per minute that’s sitting idle.

this town can use any event that brings Tahoe The type of revenue that snow globes does. I do think it wouldn’t hurt to have snow globe at a different time in the winter to spread the business around a bit more.
The article states snowload, not UV rays or thousands of trampling feet during Snowglobe is what destroys the field. Seems to me that a simple way to put the matter to rest would be to completely make sure the field is clear of snow prior to the event. Then require the promoter to place a protective barrier (maybe plywood?) over the entire field plus post a bond against event damages to the field.
It’s about time an elected body took seriously the best interests and protection of the taxpayers who fund these exploits, thank you LTCC Board of Trustees.
Snowglobe gives this City a reputation of drug use tolerance. Not something we should be grateful for. Frankly I despise it and all it represents. Yeah, yeah, you’ll all say “then move”. Well that won’t fix the issue. Dopers will still be allowed to use the “amnesty” tent and turn in their drugs and the police personnel will still be told, just look the other way, and the hostpital will still have to spend time with bad trippers in the er and have the taxpayers pay for it because the dopers don’t. Shame on council and all those that support drug use.
@Haaa-As opposed to the more refined hits to TahoeSouth’s ‘upstanding’ reputation….gambling, nudie bars masquerading as dance clubs, unreported year-round overdoses (heroin)not related to the snowglobe e-tards: domestic violence, gangcaca, inept city council, homelessness, Runnel’s Tahoe South Booster Club, Asian massage popping up like burger joints(selling meat is selling meat, I guess), the Chat-hole, blight, the 4 star roads…what else? Have you seen the figures on incarceration levels in this country? Maybe a better question is why do so many people in this country want to get ‘screwed up’?

The only thing upstanding about this town is when people risk their reputations to do the right thing and speak up against the filth that is glorified here.
People fail to understand that most communities do not operate the way this one does. The city continues to sell out under the guise of ‘progress’. Here’s a thought, why doesn’t the City spend the time energy and money needed to fix our broken, mega corrupt City?
Everything here is absolutely tainted with drugs.
@bikebum and Haaaa…..Our reputation is far from ‘outstanding’. I was being ironic…TahoeSouth(LOVE that name-the terminology AND focus of their website is all you need to know about how this beautiful place is being pimped) has long been considered the trailertrash by the other communities around the lake, and for good reason. Laughingstock is more like it. I agree the City needs to take care of things, not get on its knees for unsustainable development and the almighty tourist dollar. This town, if it so chose, could be a national model for environmental studies/sustainable development… some very good people have been working in this direction for years, though they are continually sidetracked by the dying gasp of change deniers(be it climate, economics, cultural mores, demographics gambling, destination marketers i.e. 2nd home/condo developers ) fueled by libturdarian(i.e. paul-ites, cruz-ites, bachmann-ites, palin-ites: religious zealots who are also followers of Ayn Rand-what a contradiction there) who don’t mind ignoring truth while selling their neighbors, the environment we all share, and their children’s future down the river to fund their own gain. If we’re all ‘on our own’ in the free market, then anything goes (right?)- even using the system to game the system. Poor little Golden Goose, I think I’ll just take an egg or three… since everyone else is…

Whoa! So many people, so down on it all. Just remember, this is a tourist economy. Always was and always will be. If not for the tourist dollar, not a single person could call this home. Yes, making this an environmental showcase would be ideal, yet being a showcase it would bring more tourists and their dollars. Cannot clean up the town if we do not have the money to do it so I guess we are going to have to find more ways to encourage the tourist economy. Vicious circle isn’t it?
Historically it was summer grounds for Washoe peoples, and considered sacred. Then it was tree resources for the silver boom. Then a playground for the rich and famous. At present this is a tourist economy, but it is clear to most that tourism is no longer the only viable future for the area. Like it or not, it is the truth. When a ‘vicious cycle’ is used to justify either the status quo or draconian measures we have lost our bearings. Not all tourist visits/dollars are the same. I’m not saying I have all the answers, but the realist in me is good at seeing what things are, the critic is good at seeing what doesn’t work, the idealist in me is good at seeing what could be. Bridging the gap from here to there is the challenge.
