Study: Climate change threatens Winter Olympics

Russia’s Sochi, Canada’s Vancouver, France’s Chamonix, Japan’s Nagano and California’s Squaw Valley all have one thing in common: These former and future Winter Olympics venues are each known as prime sites for cold-weather sports, and as breathtaking havens for sporting enthusiasts. But according to a new study, these winter wonderlands are now under threat from climate change and soon may no longer be cold enough to play host to elite winter sports competitions like the Winter Games.

Researchers at Canada’s University of Waterloo and Austria’s Management Center Innsbruck say that if global warming continues at its current rate, only 10 of the previous 19 Winter Olympics host cities will be cold enough to reliably host the Games in the 2050s. By the end of the century, that number could drop to a dismal six. “The cultural legacy of the world’s celebration of winter sport is increasingly at risk,” said Professor Daniel Scott, a Canada Research Chair in Global Tourism and lead author of the study, per a media release. “Fewer and fewer traditional winter sports regions will be able to host a Olympic Winter Games in a warmer world.”

Troublingly, even if the world takes steps to reduce carbon emissions and therefore lessen the impact of global warming in the coming years, the researchers said that the number of cities that could host the games in the middle and end of the century will still fall dramatically (see the infographic below). By the 2050s, at least four Winter Games venues — including Sochi, this year’s host city — will be too warm to host the competition, even if active steps to curb global warming are taken.

Climate change? C’mon; the scientists on LTN have assured me there’s no such thing. Obviously it’s a leftist plot. I mean, Olympics? In Russia?

I’d say more, but I’ve got to go water my trees. After all, it’s almost February.

A lie told often enough becomes the truth.

Humans are emitting Tens (10s) of Billions of Metric Tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and the Earth is indeed warming; probably at a rate that is not reversible. The 21s Century so far is the hottest period of time recorded with 9 out of the 10 hottest years including 2013. And all the while the 18th Century Pro Fossil Fuel crowd makes fun of all Science and Scientists that actually study climate.

The Pro Fossil Fuel crowd claims that the Scientist simply want to increase their grant money for their projects without even thinking that these Scientist have Degrees, they study in their fields and they have families too.

If there is a global conspiracy, I would argue it is the Fossil Fuel Producers with the most to loose; far more the Scientific grant money. The Oil/Coal Industries make Billions upon Billions of Dollars burning their products. If Humans are actually able to curtail their consumption of Oil/Coal, then of course, these Industries would make less in profits.

In the mean time, Glaciers that took Centuries to create are being lost at alarming rates. Greenland’s Ice Fields are loosing annually 50 Cubic Miles of fresh water to the Atlantic Ocean. The Oceans are rising and gaining in acidity.

Humanity needs to quickly come up with plans to desalinate Ocean water economically on a massive scale and re-settle large population areas from the encroaching tides.

AB, not when those lies come from uneducated folks like yourself.

Notice how the deniers rarely confront the science.
AB that study you mentioned earlier is taken out of context and is a regional study. The conclusion (you plagiarized from that blog) is not one intended by the paper.
    Good luck next time.

The Global Warming hysteria never ceases to amaze me, and yet, all of the Global Warming cult will drive their cars, heat their homes, travel to the four corners of the earth, consume goods and eat food, all courtesy of fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are what took us from “Little House on the Prairie” as a society to where we are today.

If you’re not happy with where we are today, I’d suggest living with the Amish (I have nothing against them whatsoever).

  7. Biggerpicture says - Posted: January 27, 2014

Bitterclinger, small minded folk only see the alternative to fossil fuels as going backwards to no energy, whereas forward thinkers look to alternative sources of energy to move us into the future.

Which category do you fall into?

  8. cosa pescado says - Posted: January 28, 2014

And the bitter denialist continues to avoid the science.
    As usual.

It always amazing how bitterclingercjpubworks says show me the science and it is presented and then he denies it exists or its some kind of obama liberal plot. Of course when he presents his science it all funnels back to some teaparty foxnoise dead end. Go figure…
