15 Tahoe-area athletes headed for Sochi

PARK CITY — The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association has nominated a record 94 athletes to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Sochi. Fifteen are from the greater Lake Tahoe area, including Mammoth.

The team includes eight athletes who have previously won Olympic gold.

The team is significantly larger than the 76 athletes named in 2010 because of the addition of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing, slopestyle snowboarding, parallel slalom snowboarding and women’s ski jumping.

Athletes range in age from 15 to 37.

Olympian Todd Lodwick was named to his sixth Olympic Team, matching the most ever by a Winter Olympian.

The Games begin with women’s moguls and men’s slopestyle snowboarding qualifications Feb. 6, a day before the Opening Ceremony.

The Olympic gold medalists competing for more hardware are:

    John’s right – we need a banner across 50 congratulating our Tahoe area Olympians!! Come on city council do something uniting our community for a change!!’

    I agree a banner celebrating our local athletes over hwy. 50 would be a great way to congratulate our local competitors in Sochi. If not over 50, maybe hung on those big posts by the historical society, museum, senior center… across the highway from the Sno-Flake drive in. Let’s cheer on the athletes from our area!
    I will say including Mammoth as part of Tahoe, a bit of a stretch, but on a 750 Norton Commando, dry roads and NO police cars in sight you can make it there in pretty good time, not that I would know anything about that, just sayin’…so I guess Mammoth is part of our region.

    Great Job to all the Athletes mentioned! And some people on this blog still do not think we can build a thriving Year Round Training facility here in Tahoe to compete with Salt Lake City or Lake Placid?
