Hackers hit Raley’s grocery stores

WEST SACRAMENTO — The Raley’s chain of supermarkets has recently discovered that a portion of its computer network systems may have been the target of a complex, criminal cyber attack.
According to a news release, the company immediately initiated an investigation to determine whether cyber criminals may have obtained customer credit and debit card information. So far, the company has not confirmed any unauthorized access to payment card data, but its investigation remains ongoing.
Raley’s does not believe that debit PINs could have been accessed, as it does not collect Social Security or drivers’ license numbers in association with payment card transactions.
A company spokesman says a series of immediate steps has been taken to enhance the security measures already in place to protect customer data. The company is confident that customers can continue using their payment cards in its stores.
“Our customers’ peace of mind is our top priority. We take protecting our customers’ privacy seriously and sincerely regret any inconvenience that the attack on our network may have caused,” says Mike Teel, Raley’s president and CEO. “We are working around the clock to gather details to determine the extent of any possible compromise of customer information.”
Raley’s has a dedicated response team available to answer customer questions and is providing customers updates online as they become available. The company encourages customers who have used credit and debit cards at Raley’s, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Food Source stores or Aisle One fuel stations to take the following steps to protect their accounts:
• Check and monitor your bank and credit card statements for evidence of unauthorized transactions;
• Contact your bank or credit card company if you identify suspicious charges; and,
• Know that cardholders are not held responsible for fraudulent charges made by unauthorized parties if reported promptly to the card issuer.

My debit card account was just frauded after using the pumps at the Raley’s gas station. My bank found numerous charges from something called “UK research”, and after researching found out that the mysterious charges started after I had gotten gas at Raley’s at the Y. Thankfully credit card companies are good about refunding the fraudulent charges once they have been flagged in your account.
Amanda, Thanks for the heads up on exactly WHERE in the Raley’s stores the fraud was focused. I got a notification from Raley’s today, but it was awfully vague. My husband’s credit card & ID got hacked twice after using the card for gasoline. Not Raley’s, it was awhile ago. But it appears that those readers at the gas stations are the biggest targets. We no longer use them, except at Costco, where an attendant is always present. If we buy gas anywhere else, we pay cash.

The Raley’s Gas Station occurrences commented on sound like the scanners that thieves put on pumps or use remotely to capture credit card data and pins. I recall reading about this happening to the South Shore Safeway pumps recently. It might be the same culprits. This is a good reason to keep a close eye on ones debit/card card statements.

Apparently the “skimmers” are easy to install and de-install. The video at the end shows a hand-held skimmer being used at a fast food drive-up window. Just in case you weren’t already paranoid!
Not only are skimmers easy to install at retail establishments there are also very small, easily concealable apparatuses that can be purchased very easily which can scan the information off any card that has a chip (credit, debit, driver’s license, health cards, etc.) from a distance, even when your cards are in your wallet, pocket or purse.
Makes you wonder what these technological wizards who’ve figured out how to cheat and steal could do if they put their abilities to legal use.
Skimmers at parking meters? No paid parking anywhere please!
Gee, Buck, I’ll bet most of us never even thought of that. You know how well the city maintains their stuff anyway. . . guess this means they’ll have to hire extra cyber-security people too, to cover that! By the time they’re done, those meters’ll cost way more than they’ll ever bring in, not to mention the PR nightmare.
Place a limit of $500 on any credit card u use at a grocery store.
