RAOK: Being kind when others are upset

Nancy Kerry is Lake Tahoe News’ final Random Acts of Kindness winner. She was nominated by an anonymous commenter for her supreme kindness in dealing with the complaints during SnowGlobe.

Nancy has told us as a public employee she is not allowed to accept the gift donated by Barton Health. The gift is a backpack full of all sorts of things people might need during an emergency. She can’t even accept it and re-gift it. Lake Tahoe News per Barton Health’s suggestion is giving the backpack to the senior center for staff to decide which senior should receive it.

Under the Voices section is a wrap-up of Random Act of Kindness.

RAOK: From the ER to putting on a birthday party

Kirsten Duane is today’s Random Acts of Kindness winner.

She spent the weekend at the hospital with a friend who broke her leg after slipping on ice, then opened her home for a birthday bash for another friend since friend A was no longer capable of being the hostess.

Kirsten will be receiving a gift basket from Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co.

Today is the final day to participate in Lake Tahoe News’ Random Acts of Kindness promotion. It’s about being kind — random or otherwise. Tell us what you have seen, what has happened to you or what you have done.

All previous posts may be found at the top of the page under the Random Acts of Kindness category.

RAOK: Helping neighbor be able to stay warm in the winter

Bob Hart is the latest winner of Lake Tahoe News’ Random Acts of Kindness promotion.

His ability to teach his neighbor how to split her own wood last summer means the utility bills are much less this winter. Bob will be receiving a gift basket from Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co.

Lake Tahoe News‘ monthlong kindness promotion is winding down, with two days left. To participate, all you have to do is write about something kind you have seen, something kind that was done to you or something kind that you did. Just post a comment at the end of this story.

RAOK: Neighbor comes to the rescue

Ellen Booker  isn’t a superhero, but her actions this week came close. And Paula Peterson is around to write about the ordeal.

Ellen is Lake Tahoe News’ latest Random Acts of Kindness winner  for helping her neighbor Paula out when her car got stuck on an icy South Shore road. Read all about it on yesterday’s RAOK story. All the stories posted this month for the promotion are under the Random Acts of Kindness category at the top of the page.

Ellen will be receiving an one-hour business consultation session with Knox & Associates as well as the new book about Steve Jobs.

Random Acts of Kindness is Lake Tahoe News’ way to promote kindness. Small, medium, big — it doesn’t matter the size of the kindness, or even what it is. All that matters is that kindness is beginning to spread throughout the community and beyond.

Write about a RAOK you have witnessed, you have received or you have given at the bottom of this story. Then you will be in the running for one of the many kind gifts local businesses have donated.

RAOK: Newcomer finds kindness from long-time residents

Lisa Sinizer nominated her neighbors Suzy and Rob Krzaczek for being so neighborly — especially with being new to the area.

As Lake Tahoe News’ latest Random Acts of Kindness winner, the Krzaczeks will be receiving two tickets to ride the Tahoe Queen during one of the paddle-wheeler’s day cruises.

To read all the entries for the past month, go to the top of the page. Under the Random Acts of Kindness category is a story from each day this month. The promotion ends in a few days, but we hope the kindness continues.

To participates, write about the kindness that has been done to you, the kindness you have seen or the kindness you have done. It can be as simple as opening a door or helping clear snow, or a bit more grand like turning in nearly $1,000 or giving a lift to a stranger.

RAOK: A clear driveway creates neighborhood bond

A theme seems to be developing with Random Acts of Kindness — snow.

Rebecca Wass is Lake Tahoe News’ latest Random Acts of Kindness winner for recognizing the efforts a neighbor puts forth in helping keep her driveway clear of snow. She will be receiving two books that Bona Fide Books in Meyers has published.

Random Acts of Kindness is January’s promotion on Lake Tahoe News that is all about spreading kindness. We want people to do kind things and recognize. Right about those RAOKs at the bottom of each story that will be posted for the rest of the month.

Winners are picked randomly. Everyone receives a gift from one of the kind businesses that have donated to RAOK.

RAOK: Making a meeting not be standing room only

It’s amazing how the simplest of gestures are such Random Acts of Kindness. Joel Dameral getting up to get others a chair from the stack in the back of the room at the Lake Tahoe Unified School District meeting last night didn’t go unnoticed. A fellow district employee nominated him to be a Lake Tahoe News Random Acts of Kindness winner while at the meeting.

Joel will be receiving a gift certificate to Sprouts for his kindness.

Random Acts of Kindness has been going on all month. It’s Lake Tahoe News’ way to get people to slow down, look at the kindness that is going on and acknowledge it. If you witness an act of kindness, are the recipient of kindness or are the giver of kindness, let everyone know about it by writing a comment below.

Each day someone is picked as the “winner” and then receives a gift from one of the many kind businesses in Lake Tahoe that have graciously donated a reward.

Random Acts of Kindness has a week left. What is your kindness?

RAOK: Giving up birthday gifts to help pandas

Jessika Roberts’ daughter Mirella has a thing for helping pandas. Jessika nominated Mirella in Lake Tahoe News’ Random Acts of Kindness because the youngster would prefer money be sent to help the pandas than spent on a material birthday gift for herself.

A Friend of Tallac membership for the 2012 Valhalla Art and Music Festival is their reward for being so generous.

Random Acts of Kindness is Lake Tahoe News’ way to get people to take the time to be kind — and then write about it so everyone can be inspired. At the end of this story write about a RAOK you saw, did or received. Then you will be in the running for a prize donated by one of the many kind businesses in the basin.

RAOK: Neighbor clears the driveway of snow

Becky Fortier will be eating at Cork and More soon because of her kindness and the gourmet food store’s generosity.

Becky, without being asked, cleared a friend’s driveway of snow this weekend while one half of the couple was at work and the other was inside with a broken ankle.

Random Acts of Kindness is the monthlong promotion Lake Tahoe News is putting forth to bring more kindness to the basin, even the world. The idea is to do something nice for someone else, or to recognize a nice thing done to you, or one you see.

Now, all you have to do is write about the kindness. At the end of the story, tell us about the kindness you have been a witness to, did or received.

RAOK: Offering assistance without being asked

Brenda Knox didn’t wait to be asked to help; she just stepped in to provide that extra hand when a woman needed it.

She was nominated yesterday by someone in Lake Tahoe News’ monthlong Random Acts of Kindness promotion. Her good deed has won her either one day of doggie daycare or one night of home-style boarding at Tahoe Best Friends.

Random Acts of Kindness is about taking a moment to do something nice for someone else. For examples of RAOK, read prior stories and the comments by going to the Random Acts of Kindness category at the top of the page.

To participate, write a Random Act of Kindness you have seen, received or given. Then you will be in the running for a prize given by one of the many kind businesses in Lake Tahoe. While the rewards are great, we are hoping the act of spreading kindness is an even greater reward.
