Mostly cloudy skies and a little snow are in the forecast. Most resorts are reporting a minimal amount of fresh snow.

The Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway could be extended by several leaps and bounds in 2011, including opening the first trail in the Truckee Canyon west of Verdi, possibly gaining access along the Truckee River at the S-Bar-S Ranch north of Wadsworth and opening a new stretch through the scenic McCarran Ranch.

Once McCarran is opened to bike riders after a new bridge is built, they will have nine miles of trail to ride from Mustang to Tracy, said Janet Phillips, bikeway leader.

Phillips said work could begin this year on the first four miles of trail into the Truckee Canyon from Verdi after the Truckee Meadows Water Authority signed an agreement in 2010 making its dirt maintenance road public.

That trail, however, won’t be opened until the Fleish suspension footbridge is made sturdier, Phillips said.

A grant to cover $200,000 of a $350,000 in improvements now is in the works, she said.

Mile by mile, Phillips and a band of about 11 professionals and recent retirees now are in their seventh year of pursuing a bikeway following the Truckee River from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. So far, 68 miles are open, and there are 45 miles to go.

Another 70 volunteers, she said, can be counted on for trail construction, pulling weeds or maintenance.

The bikeway can be a dirt trail or road or a wide road shoulder, such as along California 89 between Squaw Valley and Truckee, Phillips said. The big push, she said, is to get a bikeway opened, making improvements along the way.

The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association’s 6th Annual Lake Tahoe Invitational Hockey Tournament is Jan. 14-17.

This youth hockey tournament features 18 teams from California playing in three age divisions at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

The action starts Jan. 14 at 9am, with the last game of the day at 8pm. Games run all day Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 10:30pm.

The division championship game is Jan. 17 for the Mites, Squirts and PeeWees.

The National Weather Service says there is an 80 percent chance of snow today in the Lake Tahoe Basin, 90 percent chance tonight. Full sun is not expected all week.

Only in his fourth year competing in skier cross, South Lake Tahoe native Trevor Ricioli is headed for the X Games later this month.

“I grew up racing motocross. This is the most similar thing to it on snow,” Ricioli told Lake Tahoe News. “There are times when it’s scary, but that’s what makes it fun.”

The 25-year-old has been skiing since he was 5, mostly at Sierra-at-Tahoe. He is competing now for Sugar Bowl – home resort of Olympian Daron Rahlves.

“I’ve skied a few time with Daron. He is a busy guy,” Ricioli said.

Most of Ricioli’s training is with Errol Kerr, who skied in the Vancouver Olympics last year for Jamaica. He placed ninth in skier cross. Ricioli was in Canada last January to watch his friend.

The friends trade off between Sugar Bowl and Kerr’s home resort of Alpine Meadows. This week they are concentrating on giant slalom training so they are ready for the turns.

In the terrain parks is where they practice going over jumps side-by-side.

Skier cross is all about a group of athletes headed down the hill at the same time going fast, flying over jumps and rounding corners – a race against man and clock.

Although the Jan. 27-30 competition in Aspen will be the biggest stage Ricioli will have been on, he is a top contender in his sport. He has been crowned national champion in skier cross the last three years.

Last fall he was in Australia competing in the Continental Cup where he placed fifth.

Over the holidays he got word via telephone the X Games committee was inviting him to the competition.

“Part of me is nervous, but I’ve wanted to ski in the X Games since I was little. I’ve been wanting this and waiting for this,” the 2004 South Tahoe High School grad said.

He’s been getting advice about this level of competition from Kerr as well as fellow South Lake Tahoe resident Shaun Palmer, another friend. Palmer is a veteran snowboarder.

One of the things Ricioli likes is traveling. He hopes in 2014 his passport has a Russian stamp in it – meaning he’s on the Olympic team.

“My focus is to get a lot of FIS (International Ski Federation) points so when the U.S. team is formed, I get on it,” Ricioli said.

He is also concentrating on getting sponsors so he has money to travel to events that will get him to the next level.

Ricioli expects skiing will always be part of his life – but what lies beyond the slopes remains uncertain. He has dabbled in several things. He’s into photography and fashion, having started the Donovan Smyth Clothing company out of high school. Ricioli, his mom and sister opened the Donovan Denim Bar after that, which closed after a couple years because of the sour economy.

He recently started an electronic band called Thunderwolf with his friend Austin Ellis.

The qualifying round for skier cross at the X Games is Jan. 28, with the competition Jan. 30. Here is the ESPN TV schedule.

“I really want to bring some hardware to South Lake Tahoe,” Ricioli said.

The San Francisco Giants have decided to cut Lake Tahoe-Reno off the list of places for the World Series trophy to visit this weekend.

Instead, the website says the trophy will be in the area sometime in March.

The good news about the Giants is the champs will open the season at against the Dodgers on March 31 at 5pm in Los Angeles.

Sun for the morning, clouds may move in for afternoon skiing. Another storm is headed to Lake Tahoe.

First quarter

After winning the coin toss and electing to receive, the Wolf Pack quickly moved into BC territory before a Kaleb Ramsey sack of Colin Kaepernick killed the drive and forced a punt. On the Pack’s next possession, Kaepernick fumbled on a third-down play and it was recovered by BC’s Donnie Fletcher. Eagles running back Andre Williams scampered 30 yard around the left end on the next play to put BC up 7-0. Nevada answered on its next possession after Kaepernick extended the drive with two completions on third downs and then hit Rishard Matthews on a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-7. After a BC three-and-out, Matthews returned the ensuing punt 72 yards for a touchdown to put Nevada up 14-7.

A brother and sister team shared top honors at Saturday’s North Face Park and Pipe Open Series Slopestyle Finals at Northstar Resort – winning on the same pair of skis.

Following a broken ski in practice, Chris Logan borrowed sister Devin’s skis for the final round. Following their top-notch runs on Pinball, they are heading to the X Games, with Chris qualifying for the final spot based on his points in this event.

With a two-run, best run score format, Chris Logan crashed in the quarter pipe during his first run, but dominated with a 95.40 on his second final run, and a mash-up of tricks including a blind-side switch-up on the rail, 450 on to 450 off the flat rail, switch right 10 to a switch left 1260 to a 7 on the quarter pipe.
