·       California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon has appointed Belinda Valles Faustinos to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board. Faustinos, a native of Southern California, previously served as executive officer of the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, as well as executive officer of three joint powers authorities, the Watershed Conservation Authority, San Gabriel River Discovery Center Authority, and Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority. Faustinos runs BVF Consulting. The firm’s primary client is San Gabriel Mountains Forever.

Nann Fangue will give a talk Nov. 3 for people to learn how people can conserve the imperiled fishes and find solutions by understanding physiological specializations that allow animals to survive and thrive in complex environments.

Registration for this event is required. The program will begin at 6pm with refreshments and no-host bar from 5:30-6pm at 291 Country Club Drive in Incline Village on the campus of Sierra Nevada College.

·       The nonprofit Tahoe Figure Skating Club is sponsoring a Halloween event, with free skating for the community donated to by Tahoe Sports and Entertainment. There will be free skating in costumes, an exhibition by local skaters, and more free skating on Oct. 29 starting at 3pm.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the city of South Lake Tahoe is offering a workshop entitled 60 Minute Strategic Plan: Learn How to Solve Your Strategic Issues Quickly and Make Better Decisions Faster.

The goal of the workshop is for individuals and teams to learn an innovative planning and problem-solving system that guides them to think, plan, and act creatively and decisively on strategic issues large and small. This workshop introduces attendees to a one-page, 12-step planning tool that is simple in format, quickly completed, and readily adjusted. During this workshop, participants will select a strategic issue or opportunity specific to their business that they want to resolve, establish the best imaginable outcomes for the issue and develop a plan of action that they can begin implementing immediately.

Workshop facilitator, Anne Marie Smith, is the author of “60 Minute Strategic Plan.” Each participant receives a copy of the book.

The South Lake Tahoe Tax-Aide Program through AARP needs people to work in the volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance center.

Volunteers will be helping people in the South Lake Tahoe and surrounding area with free and individualized services.

Volunteers who provide tax preparation services work directly with the taxpayer to fill out tax returns. Volunteers who are greeters welcome taxpayers, help organize the client’s paperwork and manage the overall flow of tax preparation services.

Bilingual speakers are also needed.

Experience is not necessary.

A dozen corps members from the California Conservation Corps in Meyers will spend the next month in Louisiana aiding residents with flood cleanup efforts.

The group, supervised by staff member Zach McHenry, are among six crews from CCC locations throughout the state dispatched to Louisiana to help after the severe August flooding. They leave on Friday.

The work will focus on “mucking and gutting” buildings impacted by the floods: removing carpet, drywall and flooring and other wet or moldy material.

Comments are being sought on the environment document for the Meyers roundabout.

Caltrans is proposing to install a three-legged roundabout at highways 50 and 89. The initial study/proposed negative declaration is the draft environmental document. Caltrans has studied the effects the project may have on the environment and determined the project will not significantly affect the quality of the environment.

·       Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education is celebrating its 30th anniversary. During this time the group has spent more than $3.1 million on educational programs in Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

·       TRYP’s South Shore mixer is Oct. 12, 6-9pm at the Hard Rock Café inside Harveys. Attendees are encouraged to wear pink in honor of the Hard Rock Cafe’s Pinktoberfest celebrations. The North Shore mixer is Oct. 18 from 5:30-8:30pm at The Local in Incline Village. One free drink and complimentary appetizers will be provided. Cost is $10 for non-members, free for members.

Incline Village General Improvement District is offering $300 rebates for bear sheds to its residents.

Rebates are available for residential properties which install an approved bear shed or commercial properties which install an approved wildlife enclosure.

·       Classes begin Oct. 17 for Sierra Nevada College’s bachelor’s degree in global business management being offered at Lake Tahoe Community College. This is the first time the South Lake Tahoe institution has offered a four-year degree. There is still time to enroll. For more info, go online.

·       The Corral Night Ride is Oct. 15; meet at the parking area at 5:30pm. The ride is a “poker ride”, with one card given at each stop along the ride. Cost is $25 ($20 for TAMBA members), with money going to Tahoe’s trails. The fee includes a barbecue, rest stop snacks and after-party.

·       There will be a blood drive Oct. 28 from noon-5pm at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 16 or older, and in generally good health. Donors must bring a photo ID and should drink plenty of fluids before donating.
