In an effort to provide enhanced safety for children and to give the public a greater sense of security during Halloween, officers from the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Division of Parole and Probation will conduct Operation Scarecrow on Oct. 31.

The primary objective is to minimize the potential for contact between children and division-supervised sex offenders whose crime involved a minor. These targeted offenders are given specific direction well in advance by means of a written notice of “Sex Offender Restrictions for Halloween.” Restrictions include that offenders may not distribute candy to children on Halloween, answer their doors for children on Halloween, display Halloween decorations or attend festivities associated with the holiday where children are present.

During this operation officers will be conducting home visits and surveillances.

The California Highway Patrol recognizes Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31, as an opportunity for families to have lifesaving conversations with their children about drug use.

The Red Ribbon Campaign, organized by the National Family Partnership, is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation.

The CHP will be supporting efforts in California schools during Red Ribbon Week to discourage illegal drug use.

“Children whose parents talked to them regularly about the dangers of illegal drugs are far less likely to use drugs than those who do not, yet only about a quarter of teens report having these conversations,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said in press release. “Despite all the outside influences on our young people today, their families’ messages are still crucial.”

The three most widely used drugs by youth and adults are alcohol, prescription drugs, and marijuana.

Tahoe Wedding Industry Group has been created on the North Shore in an attempt to better market the area to brides and grooms.

·       NAMI Family Support Group is a free, confidential and safe support group of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges. They meet the second Tuesday of the month from 6-7:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·       On Nov. 18, Squaw Valley Institute will show the premiere of “It Ain’t Pretty” at Olympic Village Lodge. It is a film about the women who surf San Francisco’s Ocean Beach as well as a movement that has women forging new tides in women’s big wave surfing. Big wave surfers Bianca Valenti, Rebecca Wunderlich, and Monique Kitamura will be in attendance alongside film producer Kathleen Egan to sign posters with Q&A opportunities before and after the film. ·       Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing “180 Degrees South, Conquerors of the Useless” on Oct. 28 at 7pm. It features a shipwreck, surfing, mountaineering, and the efforts of Yvon Chouniard (founder of Patagonia) and Doug Tompkins to preserve the wildness of Patagonia.
