·       Tree removal for the Highway 89-Fanny Bridge project in Tahoe City will take place from 8am-5:30pm until May, weather permitting.

·       The Carson Ranger District’s fire crews have started pile burning in the Arrowhawk fuels reduction project area near Reno in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

·       Santa’s annual fly-in at the Truckee airport is Dec. 10 from 10am-3pm.

·       National Park Service is offering 10 free days in 2017: Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16, Presidents Day on Feb. 20, National Park Week weekends April 15-16 and April 22-23, National Park Service Birthday on Aug. 25, National Public Lands Day on Sept. 30, and Veterans Day weekend Nov. 11-12.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is seeking volunteers to assist with the 2017 Winter Trek Conservation Education Program that begins in January.

Shifts will be a minimum of four hours per day, one day per week from Jan. 10-March 30. Winter Trek takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Volunteers should be able to snowshoe for at least 90 minutes at an elevation of 9,100 feet without difficulty. Snowshoes are provided. 

Experience working with kids is recommended and volunteers should be comfortable speaking to large groups.  Knowledge of Sierra Nevada natural history is a plus. Volunteers must attend the mandatory training session in early January.

TART, the North Shore bus company, will offer daily service along the North and West Shores with connections to Squaw Valley, Northstar, and Truckee. TART’s ski shuttle service will be offered every 30 minutes between Incline Village, Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay, and Tahoe City with connections to Squaw Valley every 30 minutes between 6-8:30am and 4-6pm.

An hourly service will be offered beginning at 6am between Crystal Bay, Kings Beach, Truckee, and Northstar. The Donner Summit shuttle makes a return connecting daily with the Truckee local route.

TART’s free night service resumes, offering nightly bus service between Crystal Bay and Squaw Valley, Tahoe City and Tahoma, and Crystal Bay and Northstar until 2am with service continuing until 9pm beginning spring 2017.

Kyle Swanson is going to talk about the good, bad an ugly of shoulder replacement surgery on Dec. 8.

The Barton physician will also discuss what is shoulder arthritis, types of shoulder replacement and what to expect as a patient going through shoulder replacement surgery.

The free talk is from 5-6pm in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The El Dorado County Commission on Aging is looking volunteers to be part of the group.

The commission plays an advisory role to the Area Agency on Aging, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and the cities of South Lake Tahoe and Placerville on matters of interest to senior residents.

Commissioners need to be able to drive throughout the county to meetings, and represent the commission throughout the county at various meetings and events.

Applicants are being sought from all areas of the county. Preference will be given to those applicants who are 60 years and older.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Placer County staff will give an overview of new and improved processes that help home and business owners make changes to their property.

At the Dec. 13 talk staff highlight recent changes to streamline permitting, online tools, the application process, new area plans and how they are making it easier for the public to navigate. This workshop will include a short presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.

Douglas County has selected a stormwater advisory committee to review and make recommendations to the county manager.

The county manager will then work with staff to develop recommendations for the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

The committee has scheduled four public meetings at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville. Two already occurred in November. The other two are Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 from 6:30-8:30m. The agendas are online.
