Johannes Ziegler, founder and CEO Miaplaza Inc., will give a talk at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village on Feb. 15.

In 2004, Ziegler started Miaplaza Inc., focused on “social networking for everyone.” Initially, the company partnered with traditional media conglomerates to help them transition to more interactive customer relationships. When Facebook took over the general social networking space, Ziegler led Miaplaza Inc. through a radical transformation into a company focused on interactive online educational platforms for children.

Truckee is hosting a series of workshops to discuss how the town wants to regulate all things cannabis.

Because the use of marijuana was legalized last November, the town will be making changes to its zoning regulations, permitting processes and taxation practices. 

Officials want to know what residents think about cannabis regulations.

The community workshops are Feb. 9, March 9, April 13 and May 11; 6-8 each night at the airport.

An online survey is being used to gather input, too.

North Tahoe Business Association is hosting an open house on Feb. 16, 5:30-7pm at North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach.

This is an opportunity for community and business people to network and provide input on how to make Kings Beach a better place to live, work, play and visit at interactive stations.

Between now and Jan. 30, law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada will be joining forces to cite distracted drivers.

Nevada law states that any use of a handheld electronic device—cell phone, mp3 player, GPS device, etc.—while driving is illegal.  

Research has found that using a cell phone behind the wheel makes a driver four times more likely to get into a serious crash. Additionally, when sending or receiving text messaging behind the wheel, a driver’s eyes are off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, equivalent to driving the length of a football field at 65 mph.

·      Lake Tahoe Democrats are meeting Jan. 25, 6pm at Round Table Pizza at the Y in South Lake Tahoe. The agenda includes what other Democratic groups in the basin are doing, how to coordinate efforts, an update on the El Dorado County Central Committee, and goals for the future.

·      Zephyr Cove Library will be having a Broken Heart Hunt and Love Bug Craft event for children on Feb. 4 from 2-4pm. Children will craft little love bugs for Valentine’s Day and will go on a hunt in the library for the other half of a broken heart. 

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will meet in early February to update the strategic plan.

The commission is seeking input now via an online survey. The survey will be open until Feb. 2.

Douglas County’s strategic plan is the framework for which the commission prioritizes fiscal needs and public services in Douglas County.

·      David Baughman, 51, of Placerville has been appointed warden at California State Prison Sacramento by Gov. Jerry Brown. He has been acting warden since 2016.

·      Pickleball at South Tahoe Rec Center now has designated times: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-9am, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4pm, and Saturdays from 11am-2pm. Basketball hours are Saturdays from 2-5pm.

·      Tahoe Rim Trail Association will begin accepting applications on Jan. 25 for two through hikes of the Tahoe Rim Trail. These are 15-day, 165-mile, guided and supported backpack trips. Dates are July 22-Aug. 5 and Aug. 26-Sept. 9. Cost is $1,745. Register online.
