Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is hosting a seminar for people to learn requirements for planning, developing and permits needed to build or grow a business on the South Shore.

South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will be providing information.

The talk is March 15 from noon-1:30pm at Tahoe Mountain Lab in South Lake Tahoe.

Cost is $10 for chamber members, $15 for others.

The Minden Library is showing movies every Saturday at 10:30am in the meeting room.

These movies are geared toward adults and teens (rated PG to PG-13). Free coffee and treats will be available

·      Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a $368,000 contract with Auerbach Engineering Corporation of Tahoe City to design a 1.6-mile reach of the Martis Valley Trail.

·      With three months of extreme freeze-thaw cycles and recent flooding in Douglas County, Tillman Road has been closed from Kimmerling Circle to Patricia due to unsafe road conditions. The road is expected to remain closed for two to four months while design options are considered and the road can be rebuilt once weather improves.

·       North Lake Tahoe Resort Association donated $5,000 to the Yorkey family through funds raised at the annual Autumn Food and Wine Festival at Northstar. Scott Yorkey has been a permanent fixture in the North Lake Tahoe culinary scene for more a decade, serving as executive chef at Jake’s on the Lake in Tahoe City. In December 2015, his 2½-year-old daughter, Kyla, was diagnosed with acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and has since spent much of her time in the UC Davis Children’s Hospital receiving blood transfusions and chemotherapy treatments.

Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation is offering seven scholarships totaling $50,500 to eligible graduating seniors from the class of 2017 at Truckee and North Tahoe high schools who are applying to a four-year college.

Applications will be accepted through April 3, with recipients to be notified at each school’s awards night.

Annually, one four-year scholarship is available in the amount of $30,000. TMRF provides six additional scholarships; one $10,000 scholarship, one $6,500 scholarship, and four $1,000 scholarships. Requirements of these scholarships are outlined in the TMRF scholarship application.

·      Comet lift at Heavenly is open after being closed since Jan. 1 when dozens of people had to be evacuated from it.

Katie Rice of Guild Mortgage Company and Amie Quirarte of Tahoe Luxury Properties are putting on a seminar to learn how to make home ownership a reality.

The evening will start with informal conversation, cocktails and appetizers at 6pm, then at 7pm the two will discuss down payment assistance options and grant programs people may qualify for, ending with a question and answer period.

·      State Sen. Ted Gaines, R-El Dorado, sent a letter to President Trump requesting that in light of the Oroville Dam crisis he take action to conduct an immediate and thorough inspection of Folsom Dam; the existing Folsom Dam spillways; the soon-to-be-completed auxiliary spillway; and all levees potentially affected by a dam failure or unregulated flow from Folsom Lake.

·      Heavenly Mountain Resort will stay open daily through April 23, and then the weekend of April 28-30; Northstar will close April 23, and Kirkwood will stop operating April 16.

·      Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows say they plan to operate into June and will reopen just for July 4.

·      El Dorado County’s Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee will be meeting March 27 from 3-5pm to discuss Proposition 64, the California Marijuana Legalization Initiative. The meeting will be at the Board of Supervisors room in Placerville.

·       The movie “Storks” (rated PG) will be shown March 4 at 2pm in the Minden Library meeting room. The movie and popcorn are free.

Barton Health has put together a panel to discuss prescription drug abuse on March 1 from 6-7pm at Lake Tahoe Community College.

·       Best practices for managing pain and complimentary therapies

·       Safe keeping and disposal of prescription drugs

Liberty Utilities is making in-roads into the power outages that were triggered this week from the latest round of storms.

Issues remain at:

• Portola: A couple single service issues remain that should completed Thursday.
• River Road/Silver Creek/Fir Crags/Highway 89: Avalanche danger has been reduced to moderate so crews plan to begin repairing the four cross arms that were damaged. If weather cooperates, power could be restored by Friday night/Saturday morning.
• Floriston: Lots of wire down in this area that will take time to repair. Crews attempted to install a generator Wednesday night, but had difficulties; they are trying again this morning.

Two Tesla charging stations and two Clipper Creek stations that can charge any type of zero-emission electric vehicle are now available for Northstar residents and guests for free.

In partnership with the Northstar Community Service District, Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation for two years will pay for the electricity required to power these four electric vehicle charging stations located at the Northstar Community Service District office in Truckee.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, depending on how they’re driven, today’s light-duty electric vehicles can exceed 100 mpge and can drive 100 miles consuming only 25-40 kWh. Use of these vehicles also has environmental benefits, including the reduction of tailpipe emissions that are associated with greenhouse gases.
