The El Dorado County State of Jefferson is having an informational town hall on March 25 at 4pm at the Pollock Pines-Camino Community Hall, 2675 Sanders Drive, Pollock Pines.

El Dorado County is one of 21 rural counties seeking fair/equal representation in the Legislature. Los Angeles County has 15 state senators representing its citizens, while El Dorado County and 10 other counties located in the northern region of the state only have one senator.

The Jefferson formation movement is not looking to secede from the United States, and totally opposes the effort by Calexit to do just that.

·      The Parks Division of El Dorado County is cautioning river users of high water on the South Fork of the American River, and to wear appropriate cold weather gear and use advanced boating skills. Be prepared for changing water levels.

·      The Associated Press reports, “The federal Natural Resources Conservation Service says March 1 measurements had snowpacks in the Truckee, Lake Tahoe, Carson and Walker river basins all at or above 200 percent of normal, with projections calling for stream flows well above average through July. According to the service, the snowpack is keeping pace to meet or beat records set in 1983— a year which the service had ‘a winter talked about with awe and reverence by snow surveyors and water managers’.”

American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe is hosting a  St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 17. 

Food will be served beginning at 5pm. The cost is $10.

The Zephyr Cove Library will be hosting a library game day on the third Saturday of every month. 

Play a variety of board and card games provided by the library, or bring your own collection of table top games to challenge other participants.  The first game day is March 18. 

The meeting room will be set up with multiple gaming tables from 10am-4pm. Library game day is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library.

While it means losing an hour of sleep, it will be lighter in the evening.

This time change has been around since 1918. The original thinking is that it would save money and fuel.

·      Truckee Donner Public Utility District awarded Tahoe Truckee Unified School District $44,049.08 in energy efficiency rebates to support school projects.

·       Tahoe Regional Young Professionals is putting on town hall meeting about recreational marijuana on April 19 from 6-7:30pm at Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

·       Gov. Jerry Brown on March 7 asked President Trump to declare a major disaster for California – the third time he has done so this winter. It would cover El Dorado and Placer counties.

·      In honor of National Poetry Month and National Library Week, the Douglas County Public Library will be hosting a poetry contest for middle schoolers, ages 11-14, and high schoolers, ages 14-18.  Students can drop off their poems between April 1-10 at either the Minden or Zephyr Cove library. The theme of is Building Dreams. Poems may be written in rhyme or freestyle verse and should not exceed two pages.

·      Unity at the Lake (1195 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe) will be showing “The Man Who Skied Mt. Everest” on March 23 at 7pm. No cost.

·      The second annual OMG Fun Run will be June 4 starting at 10am at the bottom of Old Meyers Grade. The divisions are kids, costumes and competitive. Activities will be at the bottom of the grade. Cost is $25 for adults, $10 for ages 12 and younger. For more info, go online.

The town of Truckee and Truckee Chamber of Commerce are having a community workshop March 16 from 6-8pm about special events and quality of life in Truckee. It will be at the airport.

This hands-on workshop will provide an opportunity for people to weigh in on what aspects of special events are most important to the Truckee community. The chamber will introduce an annual Truckee quality of life survey, a baseline study to measure citizen sentiment and core values

In 2015 the town convened a Special Events Policy Development Committee to consider possible revisions to the town’s special events policy. Staff subsequently hosted three stakeholder workshops that focused on the nuts and bolts of special events policy and permitting.

At the workshop community members will have an opportunity to weigh in on how Truckee will balance the benefit of special events—such as enhancing arts and culture, outdoor recreation, and economic benefit—with the potential challenges—such as traffic congestion, road and trail closures, environmental degradation, and constrained parking.
