Registration for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in Lake Tahoe Unified School District for next school year begins in May.

For kindergarten, children must be 5 before Sept. 1, 2017, and the transitional program they must turn 5 between Sept. 2-Dec. 2, 2017. The transitional program is two years at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

California law requires the following information:

• Child’s birth certificate
• Proof of immunizations, which includes the Varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B and for most children, the last booster shot.  Children will not be enrolled in school without presenting an up-to-date immunization record.
• Health examination upon entry to school (schedule with your family physician).
• Oral health examination upon entry to school (dental examinations that have occurred in the last 12 months meet this requirement).
• Proof of California residency (lease agreement, mortgage statement, utility statement, etc.).

Placer County is offering same-day building permit services every Tuesday in the Tahoe City office as a way to speed up the process for what is expected to be a busy spring-summer to deal with winter storm damage.

The Tahoe office can help with permits for repairs, decks, patio covers, signs, pools, minor interior alterations, reroofs, electrical repair, HVAC change-outs, solar panel installation, window and door change-outs and other minor building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing permits.

Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe will be going to the dogs with the help of Animal Coalition of Tahoe.

On April 11 from 4-8pm there will be a special party in honor of National Pet Day.

TBR will have all kinds of activities taking place in The Tavern: the Heavenly and Sierra-at-Tahoe avalanche dogs will make an appearance, pet psychic Terri Jay will provide mini readings on pets and people ($20 for 10 minutes), and artist Will Eichelberger will be displaying his animal art.

Plus, there will be a best dressed dog contest. Entries are $5, with proceeds going to ACT.

Caltrans is hosing a meeting April 12 for people to learn about the upcoming project on two miles of  Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.

The primary objective of this $56 million project from the Y to Trout Creek is to collect and treat highway storm water runoff. The project also will help meet the goals of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s environmental improvement program.

The project will widen the roadway to provide 6-foot shoulders for bike lanes, replace traffic signals, rebuild curb, gutter and sidewalks and improve pavement cross slope. Caltrans also is working with South Lake Tahoe to make improvements at Sierra Boulevard with a signal and left turn lane.

The meeting is scheduled from 5:45 to 7pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. A project presentation will start at 6pm.

For Liberty Utilities customers who had meters that could not be read because of the snow, their January and February bills were based on estimated billing. This may have resulted in higher- than-expected bills for those months.

Once an actual read is obtained, Liberty provides an adjusted corrected statement.

·      The Meyers Mountain Bike Festival has been renamed the Tahoe Mountain Biking and Brew Festival. It will be Aug. 26-27.

·      The Assistance League of Sierra Foothills’ 8th annual Gardens of the Hills fundraiser Tour and
 Crafts Fair will be May 6, 10am-5pm and May 7, 11am-5pm. The crafts fair will be at Valley View School gymnasium in El Dorado Hills and is open to the public. Tickets for the garden tour are $27 for adults, $10 for children 12 and younger. They may be purchased online.

·      Tahoe Fund in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service recently installed a “sled corral” at Spooner Summit to give people a place to leave their broken sleds because people thought leaving them on the hillside was an appropriate way to discard trash in the mountains.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Nevada will be Joining Forces and focusing on distracted drivers through April 15.  

Nevada Highway Patrol will be working diligently to urge motorists to keep your eyes on the road and put away cell phones or other items that cause distractions.

Five seconds is the average time eyes are off the road while texting. When traveling at 55mph, that’s enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded.

Kids​’​ Nature Journal Club is coming to the South Lake Tahoe Library.

This is for youth who love Lake Tahoe and the outdoors. They will be taught skills for exploring the natural world around them and how to capture their adventures in a nature journal.

Some materials will be provided, but everyone is encouraged to bring a notebook and pen. Dress for the weather, explorations will be outside. 

The club will be April 8, April 22 and May 13 at 10am at the library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. It is free for children 10 and older.
