The Nevada Department of Transportation is advising motorists to anticipate travel delays as Highway 28 will be restriped April 24-27.

Reduced speed limits and travel delays of up to 30 minutes should be anticipated between 8:30am and 2:30pm daily. The mobile road striping operation is scheduled to begin at the Highway 28/Spooner junction on Monday and move west to Nevada-California state line over the following days.

Drivers are reminded to drive safely and not illegally pass in road work zones. 

South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club members are hosting a night of chili and bingo on April 28.

The event will be at the SLTYC’s Clubhouse located in the Tahoe Keys Marina at 2435 Venice Drive, South Lake Tahoe. It’s on the second floor above the harbor master’s office. The no host bar with appetizers opens at 5:30pm. The chili tasting and dinner begins at 6:30pm. Bingo and dessert follows. 

The cost is $15.

The SLTYC is a social organization which holds events throughout the year, enjoys the lake. The club does not require boat ownership to join. Members have power boats, sail boats, kayaks and paddleboards.

CalFire’s Ready for Wildfire app is a tool that puts a library of step-by-step checklists in the palm of the user’s hand.

It allows homeowners to track their progress while creating defensible space, hardening their homes with fire-resistant construction, assembling an emergency supply kit and creating a family communication and evacuation plan. App users, with the tap of a finger, can check off each step and see their progress as they reach.

While being a great educational tool, the Ready for Wildfire app also provides critical wildfire alerts. Users can sign-up for customized alerts that will send a text or push notification to their device when a CalFire is responding or assisting to a wildfire in their area. Additionally, users can set up alerts for single counties, multiple counties, or statewide. The app lets users enable an alert system to notify them if a wildfire is reported within 30 miles of their device.

·      Lake Tahoe Community Choir’s “Broadway Old and New” will be May 5-7, 7:30pm in the Duke Theatre. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

·      The 6th annual XTERRA Tahoe City Off-Road Triathlon, Duathlon & Sprint on June 24 starts and finishes from Commons Beach in Tahoe City and features a Lake Tahoe swim, as well as mountain biking in Burton Creek. For more info, go online.

The third annual Spiritual Summit will be May 27 from 1-4pm in South Lake Tahoe.

The major goal for this event is to share with the community a way in which to get beyond challenges that life presents and gain a balance on the side of good.

Members and friends of South Lake Tahoe Christian Science Church will present ideas based on the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science. Speakers will share how to expect good and to gain freedom from whatever is bothering people.

·      The Drug Free Coalition will be hosting a drug take back day at the Earth Day celebration on April 29 from 10am-3pm at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe.

·      On May 6 at 10am Peter Mires will present Mark Twain on Architecture. He will share all he learned during his research fellowship at the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies. By pairing passages gleaned from Twain’s work with examples of extant buildings, Mires illustrates Twain’s comments, opinions, and tastes—humorous or otherwise—on the subject of American architecture. The free presentation will be at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

·      Comments are being sought until May 17 on the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Behavioral Health Division’s fiscal year 2017-18 Mental Health Services Act. The draft plan is online.

·      Lake Valley Fire Protection District on April 15 had an awards ceremony for employees and civilians. Recognized were: firefighter of the year – Ted Jackson; civilian award of merit – Jacob Zorn; civilian award of merit – Ian Whitmarsh; life saver award – Alex Vaughn, Wes Long, Mike Anderson, Luke Anderson and Joe McAvoy; medal of valor – Brad Zlendick.

·      Each Wednesday in May from 5:30-7pm the master gardeners at the Truckee Demonstration Garden will provide a history lesson on each plant, planting instructions, and attendees will receive free cultivars to take home. The cost to attend is based on a self-selecting sliding scale from $10 to $20. Tickets will be available online beginning two weeks prior to the event.

·      Tahoe Rim Trail Association is celebrating National Trails Day on June 3 from 9am-3pm at Spooner Lake. This all day event will feature trail construction demos, mountain biking workshops, educational talks and more. For more info, go online.

·      The League to Save Lake Tahoe is hosting a cleanup day on April 19 from 9am to noon. Meet in front of Basecamp Pizza in South Lake Tahoe. Cleanup materials will be supplied. It may be a while before some of the higher passes in the Sierra open.

Here is information from Caltrans:

Highway 89 – Monitor Pass: Snow removal has begun from Highway 395 to the Alpine County line. There is approximately 5 feet of snowpack at the Mono/Alpine county line. Road repair is required before reopening. There is no estimated date for reopening the highway at this time.

Highway 108 – Sonora Pass: Snow removal equipment is in place and starting to work on the lower sections of the highway. The snowpack is estimated to be 5 to 12 feet on the highway. There is no estimated date for reopening the highway at this time.

Highway 270 – Bodie Road: All snow has been removed but the highway remains closed at the request of Bodie State Park personnel.

Highway 120 west – Tioga Pass from the junction of Highway 395 to the Yosemite National Park Gate: Snow removal equipment is in place and starting to work on the lower sections of the highway. The snowpack is estimated to be between 8 to 15 feet on the highway, with up to 50 foot snowdrifts in some locations. There is no estimated date for reopening the highway at this time.

Sarah Hockensmith of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will be giving a presentation May 25 about the diverse landscapes of the Tahoe region from lake level to the tops of the mountains. The talk will cover how different flower, tree, bird, and mammal species adapt as they go up in elevation and what unique creatures you can find around specific elevations in the area.

To celebrate Tahoe’s natural history, TINS is hosting the Tahoe Nature Chase during 2017.

The talk starts at 6:30pm at Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City. A donation of $5 is suggested.

The option to join the season long Tahoe Nature Chase will also be offered.

·      Truckee Town Council is having a budget workshop regarding capital improvement projects on April 17 from 4-8pm at the airport.

·      Pato Banto and the Now Generation, along with guests Clear Conscience and Two Peace will be at the Blu Nightclub in Stateline on April 29. Doors open at 9pm. Must be at least 21 to attend. Tickets are $15 plus fees.

·      Donald Carano, an influential figure in the development of the gaming and resort industry in Northern Nevada, and Ty Cobb, a key figure in foreign affairs and national security during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, were named distinguished Nevadans by the Nevada System of Higher Education board of regents.
