For the second time in four years Douglas County has the best tasting water in Nevada.

Cave Rock Water Treatment Plant had won first place for the state’s best tasting water.  The service area includes Cave Rock, Lakeside and Skyland systems.  They get their water directly from Lake Tahoe.

Another Douglas County system, “Montaña,” was second.  This system represents a water well servicing homes near Jack’s Valley Road north of Genoa.

In 2014 Douglas County Utilities won first place for a well in Genoa.  The following year, Glenbrook Water Co. took first place for the state.  That year Glenbrook’s sample went to the finals in Washington, D.C., where it won first place in the United States against nearly 1,000 others.

South Tahoe Association of Realtors is hosting a class about radon on April 26 from noon-1pm.

The free talk will be at STAR’s office, 2307 James Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

The guest speaker will be Jim Gorman of Tahoe Radon. Gorman is a licensed contractor and is certified by the National Radon Proficiency program. He will be covering radon in the Tahoe basin, the potential risks and how to mitigate them as well as create a safe environment.

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium-rich decomposing granite. Many Lake Tahoe homes have high levels of radon gas. After cigarette smoking, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Expect new lane shifts on Highway 50 near South Carson Street as reconstruction of the future Carson City Freeway intersection continues.

Beginning the evening of April 25 through early May, lanes will remain reduced to one in each direction, but will be shifted slightly to the north. Motorists are advised to follow all posted construction signs and speed limits.

The work is part of the approximate $42 million Carson City Freeway project which will open the last approximately four miles of the freeway between Fairview Drive and the Spooner junction. The project is expected to complete in late summer.

The project is aimed at increasing traffic mobility and safety.

As the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival embarks on its 45th anniversary season, the organization wants to celebrate its history.

To this end, festival organizers are asking people to share a story about their first or favorite visit and/or memorable moments at Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival over the years.

Perhaps you were in the company of good friends and family or maybe you were on a first date.

·      Douglas County plans to start towing vehicles parked on Cave Rock Drive. Signs will go up soon. This is a poplar locale for hikers, especially at sunset.

·      The Minden Library is showing “Sing” (rated PG) on May 6 at 2pm. The movie and popcorn are free. The library is located at 1625 Library Lane.

·      Chef Mark Estee and his partners are opening the Union, a restaurant-brewery, in Carson City this spring where the Lake Tahoe Brewing Co. used to be.

·      The 6th annual Tahoe Blue Bloody Mary Festival at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe will be Aug. 6.

Expect lane closures on Highway 50 now through May during the week while the El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Bike Trail is constructed.

Lane closures during June are not expected to occur on a daily basis. The class 1 bike trail is expected to be completed in mid-July or early August.

The project includes construction of an approximately 1 mile paved bike path in a dedicated right-of-way separated from the road on the north side of Highway 50.

Sierra Nevada Construction will be installing erosion control and water quality measures this week.

·      Tahoe Transportation District is having an open house April 24, 5-7pm at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. There will be an update on the loop road project, affordable housing initiatives, and release of the environmental impact report.

·      Students in the Art Club at Lake Tahoe Community College are once again heading to the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art conference in Davis from April 28-30. LTCC students are designing and installing a personalized exhibition that will be on display throughout the conference

·      Truckee Police Department will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs on April 29 from 9am-1pm at the Gateway Shopping Center.

·      Truckee Thursdays return June 15. Every Thursday through August from 5-8:30pm the downtown comes alive with a food court, artisan vendors, merchant and community displays, children’s activities, live music and a beer garden.

The community is invited to a free seminar titled “I Can’t Hear You Because I Am Shouting! Respectful Dialogue Even When We Disagree.” 

The focus will be on strategies for positive conversations in polarized environments, conversations that offer an exchange of views so that people are listened to, respected and valued.  The workshop will be May 6 from 9am-2:30pm at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. 

Presenters include local resident Fred Roberts, a Lake Tahoe Community College instructor and communications consultant, and Hilda Pecoraro, a Presbyterian pastor who provides support with difficult conversations by offering avenues for individuals to feel heard and to help relationships remain in tact.

·      Gary Romano, owner of Sierra Valley Farms presents his newest book “July & Winter: Growing Food in the Sierra” on May 20, 2pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Romano will share his knowledge from decades of experience growing food in the Sierra Nevada.

·      Taj Mahal and Keb Mo are touring together to promote their support first album together, “TajMo.” They will be at MontBleu in Stateline on June 24.

·      Wanderlust at Squaw Valley returns July 20-23.

·      Sixty-eight inches of new snow has fallen on the slopes of Sugar Bowl Resort in the month of April alone, bringing its season-to-date snow total to 782 inches. Resort officials have decided to extend the season until May 7. Daily operations will continue through April 23. Sugar Bowl will be open Friday through Sunday only, April 28-30 and May 5-7.

·      Placer County is asking people to take an online survey. The feedback will be used to develop a 10-year vision for recreation improvements.
