·      South Tahoe High School Boosters is hosting a “shred it” event at the American Legion parking lot on May 19 from noon-4pm. It is $10 per box to shred. Half of the proceeds go to the boosters.

·      Planning and problem solving for the real world is the topic of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s workshop on May 17 from 2-5pm. ·      In preparation for the upcoming wildland fire season, Tahoe National Forest will have two water tenders; 11 engines; three 20-person Type 1 hotshot crews; 10 patrol units; one air tactical group supervisor; two helicopters staffed with 17 firefighters; and 11 chief officers.

·      “The Life Aquatic” will be shown for free at South Tahoe High School in the viewing room of the TADA Building on May 19 at 7:30pm.

The right lane of eastbound Interstate 80 east of Kingvale in Nevada County will be closed for an extended period as emergency crews investigate and repair drainage damage.

Winter storms increased water flows in established drainage areas resulting in erosion around culvert pipes adjacent to the freeway.

During periods of increased traffic, such as weekends and holidays, the restriction to one freeway lane through the work zone will increase the likelihood of traffic congestion.

·      South Lake Tahoe Wedding & Honeymoon Association is hosting a dog costume contest and barbecue to benefit Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. It is May 21, 1-4pm at Pine Cone Resort, 601 Highway 50, Zephyr Cove. Cost is $15. Tickets are online.

·      Through traffic on Kingsbury Grade will be held at 12:30pm May 12 for the Amgen bike race. Highway 28 to Incline Village will be closed from 12:30-1:30pm on May 11. Through traffic will be held at Spooner Summit at 1pm.

·      Selwyn Lee is now Barton Health’s chief medical officer.

The Barton Foundation is giving $40,000 in grants to improve community health. Local nonprofits, health organizations, schools, and public agencies may apply for funding.

The grants provide funds for programs and organizations that positively impact the health of the South Tahoe community. In this grant cycle, projects and programs that address mental health, substance abuse, and access to healthcare services will be considered. These three issues were identified as the most pressing health needs in South Lake Tahoe’s 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment.

Grant proposals will be accepted until May 31. Priority will be given to programs that benefit underserved populations and people under age 25. Some of the other grant criteria include the educational benefit, long-term impact, and emphasis on collaboration.

South Lake Tahoe is accepting applications for the South Tahoe Action Team.

The classes will be May 10, May 17 and May 24 from 5:30pm to approximately 7:30pm. There is a “practical” session tentatively scheduled for June 3.

Curriculum will include nine hours of instruction taught by members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department.

STAT team members will be expected to commit their time and will be called upon in times of natural disaster, large scale emergencies and times of need in the South Lake Tahoe area. STAT team members to be well versed in our command structure, emergency first aid, lifting/moving techniques, use of extinguishers, flood safety and building collapse.

·      Douglas County School District board will have a public hearing on the 2017-18 budget on May 17 at 5pm in Minden.

·      Boat inspections are not being offered at the public Donner Lake boat launch this season. All Truckee inspections will be at the Truckee Airport. Any boats that try to launch without at current sticker will be directed to the inspection station, and may be subject to a citation if they launch without a valid sticker.

·      U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the Lake Tahoe Basin are scheduled to open May 12. However, campgrounds on the West Shore still have a large amount of snow at lake level, which will delay their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open May 19, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds on June 2. Fallen Leaf Campground will open May 12.

This year’s recipients are:

• Juvenile Service Council — $3,000
• Tahoe Prosperity Center — $3,000
• Habitat for Humanity (EDC) — $3,000.

TWCF collected $29,000 is through annual memberships. Another $11,000 is in our endowment fund.
