Grades 1-12 may audition for Tahoe Arts Projects’ Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “Sleeping Beauty” on July 26 from 10am-noon at the Sierra House Elementary School multipurpose room in South Lake Tahoe.

• KTHO radio General Manager Paul Middlebrook and Lake Tahoe News Publisher Kathryn Reed each taped a segment about the media with host Steve Teshara to be aired on Douglas County’s public access television channel for a month.

• The Fallen Leaf Lake Community Services District board came up with more questions July 17 about the inter-agency agreement that would be needed to get mitigation funds via El Dorado County and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to buy an electric boat. A decision could be months down the road.
• Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District board this month shot down an appeal by someone who doesn’t want Kirkwood Meadows Public Utility District to build a diesel power plant.
Origami will be featured at the Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove on July 29 at 1:30pm.
Dennis Little has shared his hobby of Japanese paper folding for many years at the library. He will tell the history of origami and bring examples of his projects. During past programs children made fish, Olympic medals, cranes, boxes, and many more items. Come for an enjoyable hour to learn about this ancient craft and make a project to take home. For ages 5 and up; adults are welcome, too. Parents may help younger children with their projects. Sign up by July 28 to participate.

Tahoe Writers Works performs the fifth Captain Thunder installment of the popular children’s radio-style play on July 22 at 7:30pm.
Set in the 1940s, “Captain Thunder and the Terrifying Ray of Doom” will be performed in the Boathouse Theatre at the historic Tahoe Tallac Site on the South Shore.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a red flag warning for the Lake Tahoe-Reno-Carson areas from 3-8pm today.
A red flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or are imminent. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create extreme fire growth potential.
Winds will be from the west at 15-20mph, with gusts up to 35mph.
Temperatures in the Lake Tahoe Basin will continue to be in the low to mid-80s for the rest of the week, with lows in the 40s. Add 10 degrees to those numbers for Reno temperatures.
Expect delays through Thursday on Interstate 80 while Caltrans removes rocks to make the slope more stable.
Traffic controls will be from 5am-4pm these three days starting at Hirschdale for eastbound traffic and in Verdi for westbound travelers.
This is part of the $71 million Truckee River Canyon project that should be finished this fall.

• Award-winning Tahoe mystery writer Todd Borg will be at the Twin Cabins on the Tahoe Tallac Site on the South Shore through July 22 from 10am to 4pm.
• South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce is still thriving – it just gave up its lease. “We didn’t get much walk-in traffic,” President JoAnn Connor said. She said the approximately 400 calls a month (530.542.5060) the organization gets are people seeking advice where to stay and what to do once they reach the South Shore.
• The World Series of Poker Circuit schedule for 2010-11 includes a stop at Harveys Lake Tahoe from Nov. 11-23.
• All campgrounds in Yosemite National Park are open. Snow delayed the opening of some. This is the first years since the 1997 flood that Yosemite Creek Campground has been open.
As of July 19, the candidates who have taken out papers to run for South Lake Tahoe City Council are Tom Davis, Angela Swanson, Georg May and Claire Fortier. No one has turned the documents in.
Three positions are up on the Nov. 2 ballot.
City Clerk Suzie Alessi has taken out papers to retain her seat as city clerk and David Olivo has done the same to keep his job as city treasurer.
