The hearing scheduled for Oct. 1 in El Dorado County Superior Court regarding the future of the Lakeview Commons project in South Lake Tahoe has been postponed to Oct. 4.

Many children in South Lake Tahoe need a special “voice”. These are children who have been abused or neglected and have not had a voice to speak for their own safety and needs. The South Lake Tahoe branch of CASA El Dorado County is offering a fall training class this month for adults interested in becoming a volunteer advocate and a powerful voice in Court for children.

An informational meeting is set for Oct. 4 from 3-4pm at the El Dorado County Superior Courthouse conference room – 1354 Johnson Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge and advocate for a child’s best interest in court. Many of these children have been removed from their homes and are placed in foster care. The CASA volunteer is often the only consistent person in their life during a traumatic time, serving as an advocate, a mentor, and a friend. CASA volunteers are truly making a difference in the lives of children every day.

Shred old tax returns, bank statements, credit card statements, old checks and anything else a thief can use to steal your identity. A secure and mobile truck will be at the club that shreds everything on site. Teen Enterprise will also come to your home or office and pick up boxes at no extra charge.

Prices start at $10 per box with discounts for large quantities. Businesses are welcome.

All requests and payments for shredding must be made before the day of the event in order to best plan the shredding truck size.

• Tahoe Resource Conservation District folks will continue to work at the Meyers location to decontaminate vessels before they enter Lake Tahoe. A different type of solution is being tried. Permanent signs may be erected in the future to direct people to the location on Highway 89.

• Placer County Department of Public Works is constructing four TART bus shelters along highways 28 and 89. Last winter Placer County approved the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association request to spend infrastructure funds on shelters, 24 informational map signs, along 19 miles of trails and 13-bear proof trash cans located at transit shelters.

• Tahoe Arts Project is no longer going to have the Oscar night fundraiser.

• Ski Lake Tahoe has redesigned its website.

• Tahoe Transportation District is going after a $20 million federal grant to fund a 75-mile bike path around Lake Tahoe.

• El Dorado County sheriff’s officials reported four vehicles being broken into this month at Big Meadows off Luther Path.

South Lake Tahoe-based not-for-profit environmental organization Tahoe Resource Conservation District is seeking two board members to serve on its five-person board of directors.

New board members, appointed by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, will serve voluntary, four-year terms from Nov. 30, 2010 through Nov. 30, 2014. Interested applicants are required to reside and own property in the Lake Tahoe Basin in either Placer or El Dorado counties and are asked to submit a letter of interest along with a county committee application (available online ) to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors by Nov. 1.

Decisions regarding new board members are expected to be announced the week of Nov. 15.

Current board members have a diverse set of backgrounds, with experience in not-for-profit management, private business, education, resource management and real estate. New applicants or anyone from the general public is invited to attend Tahoe RCD board meetings, the next one is Oct. 12.

Tahoe RCD’s mission is to promote the conservation and improvement of the Lake Tahoe Basin’s soil, water, and related natural resources by providing leadership, information, programs, and technical assistance to all land managers, owners, organizations, and residents. Tahoe RCD is a non-regulatory, grant funded, not-for-profit agency that works with a variety of partner agencies to implement programs and outreach, which currently focus on erosion control, runoff infiltration, terrestrial and aquatic invasive species control, and conservation landscaping.

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a community City Council Candidates Forum on Oct. 19 at 5:30pm at the library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

This structured forum will provide each candidate the opportunity for opening and closing remarks and explain their position on several local issues. Immediately following the closing remarks portion of the forum, time will be allocated for the audience and the candidates to discuss additional items not covered during the forum.

The program, “Ninety Years of Voting Power: Changes, Challenges and Choices,” features a panel with Kathay Lovell, Kim Walli, and Nancy Epstein. The speakers will address their role as women in the political arena.
