Squaw Valley’s dog-friendly music festival Peak and Paws returns to the village June 17-18.

There will be pet-friendly guided hikes, a Splash Dogs dock jumping competition, Yappy Hour drink specials, an array of pet-centric specialty products and vendors, as well as live bluegrass music all weekend. All proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

A $5 entry donation will also go toward the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Last year’s festival raised $22,500.

This year it will be two days, going from 11am-5pm both days.

South Lake Tahoe on June 5 released the Vacation Home Rental Socioeconomic Impact report completed by Michael Baker International.

The city paid for the study in order to identify emerging impacts, particularly impacts that may be directly affecting residents and people who work in the city. The goal was to examine the range of factors that may be influenced by the growth of the sharing economy, and evaluate the socioeconomic impacts of those factors.

The City Council will have a special workshop June 13 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport for the consulting team to make a presentation and summarize the report, and go over policies they suggest.

South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club’s annual membership drive is June 11 at the clubhouse at the Tahoe Keys Marina.

The group is designed for people who love being on Lake Tahoe, have fun participating in a variety of activities and like to give back to the community. Boat ownership is not a requirement for membership.

·      Chipper Lowell will be returning to Lake Tahoe to headline Magic Fusion nightly from June 8-20 at The Loft in South Lake Tahoe.

·      SmartAsset analyzed Social Security income, cost of living data, and taxes across all counties to determine where people are getting the most mileage out of Social Security. Placer County was fifth best in the state, El Dorado County seventh, and Amador County ninth.

·      At the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center on June 17 from 8-11am pancake breakfast, with a rummage sale from 8am-noon. On June 30 from 7:30-10pm there will be a dance.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with GreenACTnv, will offer a free presentation on how to prepare landscapes to reduce erosion hazards and increase the potential for storm runoff to soak into soils.

The workshop is 6pm, June 14 at the Douglas County Cooperative Extension office, 1325 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Presenters include water resource specialist John Cobourn, geologist Matt McMackin and retired U.S. Forest Service hydrologist Larry Schmidt.

In addition to runoff from the rooftop and pavement, water can sometimes flow onto property from uphill adjacent properties. Such problems can be severe during occasional flash floods from thundershowers. McMackin and Schmidt will suggest ways that neighbors can work together to reduce impacts to their homes and neighborhoods.

Participants are invited to email photos (lewiss@unce.unr.edu) of erosion or drainage problems on their properties, along with a simple site plan to show where the problem areas are located. This way the instructors can address specific problems being encountered in the area.

TEDxUniversityofNevada organizers  sixth annual event will be Jan. 27. The call for speakers is open from June 1-24.

Speakers interested in participating in the event are encouraged to submit proposals to share their “big idea worth spreading.”

TEDxUniversityofNevada 2018 will take place at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

TED stands for technology, entertainment and design. While organizers try to incorporate each of these elements into the program, Reno event organizers are especially looking for technology and design-focused talks.
