·      It is illegal to possess or use fireworks and/or pyrotechnics within the Truckee Meadows and North Lake Tahoe Fire Districts, which includes the unincorporated areas of Washoe County.

·      Participants in the annual Wildfire Awareness Multi-hour Trail Event in Washoe County raised more than $4,000 for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

·      NAMI El Dorado County has launched a new website. NAMI, which stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is dedicated to mental health awareness and improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education, and advocacy.     

·      Lake Tahoe boaters are encouraged to visit this website to know the rules.

·      Orthopedic surgeon Zachary Child has joined Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics. Child’s background is in adult and child orthopedic spine surgery and musculoskeletal oncology. 

·      Fireworks are not allowed anywhere on the Tahoe National Forest.

·      Effective July 3 CalFire is suspending all permits for outdoor residential burning within the state responsibility areas of Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and Alpine counties.

·      Nevada law enforcement officers will be increasing patrols for impaired drivers and riders between now and July 14.

·      Former MLB all-star pitcher Mark Mulder, the two-time defending champion, and newly-retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo are the co-favorites to win the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

·      July 8 is the Death Ride. Monitor pass will be closed to motorists from 5am-noon and Ebbetts Pass from 5am-3pm for the bike ride.

·      California and Nevada are among the states with the highest fatalities on rural roads. Fatalities were measured as a rate for every 100 million miles traveled on rural, non-interstate roads by the research group TRIP: 1. South Carolina, with a rate of 3.82 fatalities, 2. California, 3.19 fatalities, 3. Kentucky, 2.98, 4. Mississippi, 2.93. 5. Montana, 2.81 and 6: Nevada, with a rate of 2.77 fatalities.

·      The Minden Library is showing family movies every Saturday in July at 2pm in the meeting room. The movies and fresh popcorn are free. Movies include: July 1: “The Wild Life” (Rated PG), July 8: “Stuart Little” (Rated PG), July 15: “Surf’s Up 2: Wave Mania” (Rated PG), July 22: “Kubo and the Two Strings” (Rated PG), and “July 29: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” (Rated PG).

·      Game wardens in Nevada, along with boating law enforcement officers across the country, will be on the lookout for drunken and stoned” oaters during the annual Operation Dry Water program June 30-July 2.

·      Mike Goar, current vice president and chief operating officer of Keystone Resort in Colorado, will be coming on board this summer to run Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar ski resorts.

·      New this year is evening on the lawn at Valhalla. The first one is July 5, 5:30-7:30pm. Bob Woods’ Swampbilly is the artist. There is a suggested donation of $10-$20. Bring lawn chairs and a picnic; a bar will be set up.

·      Joey Logano presented the High Fives Foundation with a check for $5,000, bringing the Joey Logano Foundation’s total to $53,000 in three years. The Joey Logano Foundation inspires and assembles the NASCAR community to assist children and young adults in need during times of crisis.

·     South Lake Tahoe Library will host Puppet Art Theater Co. on June 30. The free outdoor show starts at 2pm at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. Puppet Art Theater Co. will be performing “Tale of the Dragon’s Tail!” which tells the story of Princess Penny and a dragon in her kingdom.

·      ​Creating ​Equilibrium, a first-of-its-kind event focused on generating innovations that impact the environment, will be Aug. 25-27 at Squaw Valley.

·      Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Corps is offering a free emergency preparedness and response training academy beginning July 13. For more info, go online.

Not only are fireworks illegal in the entire Lake Tahoe Basin, but numerous fires result from their use, not to mention the severe injuries they may cause to the users. 

The South Shore area provides the locals and visitors a world-class fireworks display on the evening of July 4 at 9:45. This display is visible over the lake from the South Shore beaches on the California and Nevada sides of the state line.

·      Current Nevada law requires drivers to slow down, proceed with caution, and if possible, move to the far lane when passing an official emergency response vehicle pulled over on the side of the road with amber lights flashing. Effective July 1, an updated law requires drivers to also do the same for Nevada Department of Transportation vehicles.

·      Julia Mancuso, Olympic gold medalist from Squaw Valley, married Dylan Fish, general manager of Tavarua in Fiji, at the island resort last week.

·      The Tahoe Truck Stop Food Truck Weekend scheduled for July 14-16 at the American Legion has been canceled.

·      South Lake Tahoe’s Fourth of July parade starts at the Y at 10am. So far there are 75 vehicle and float entries, and more than 200 walkers in the parade. Afterward, there will be a party at Bijou Community Park.

·      On June 21, the California Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to reduce sage-grouse hunting permits to zero for the 2017 season.

·      The 36th annual Lights on the Lake fireworks show on the South Shore begins at 9:45pm July 4.

·      “Beautiful Anarchy” featuring live music by Reno’s Los Pistoleros plus a burlesque show hosted by Sheeba Queen of the Night and the Whiskey Sirens will be at Whiskey Dicks Saloon in South Lake Tahoe on June 30. Doors open at 8pm. Must be 21; $10 cover at the door.

·      Beginning June 24-25, Squaw Valley will be open for skiing and riding from 8:30am to 2pm. These hours will remain for July 1-4. After July 4, Squaw Valley plans to operate on Saturdays as long as the snow lasts. Weather and conditions permitting, the resort will run lifts from 8:30am-12:30pm. 

·      Ronnie Milsap will be at TJ’s Corral at the Carson Valley Inn on Aug. 26.

·      Lake Tahoe was named one of the top small towns by U.S. News; the whole basin is considered a small town.
