Coyote Grill in Round Hill is hosting a fundraiser for Tahoe Youth & Family Services on July 28.

Proceeds from the chili feast from 5-8pm will go to the nonprofit.

• There will be a book sale at the South Lake Tahoe library on Rufus Allen Boulevard on July 30. Doors open to Friends of the Library at 9am and to the general public at 10am. The sale ends at 3pm.

• Early registration is open for SMG’s annual October tourism and marketing workshop on the South Shore.

• At the July 23 Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in Reno, Maynard Dixon’s 1944 “Sculptured Sandstone” was purchased for $351,000 by a Lake Tahoe collector.

• Calstar’s 6th annual Flying 5K and Kids Fun Run is Aug. 27 at 8:30am. The 5K course starts on the runway, crosses a stream and goes off road onto trails. Click on the flyer for more information.

• Emerald Bay State Park offers a behind-the-scenes tour of Vikingsholm Castle and talk with longtime park historian Helen Smith, who frequented the property as a child, on July 28 from 6-8pm as part of their Conversations with History’s program. Tickets are $40/person.

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will have its regular annual meeting July 29 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.

At 10:30am, the JPA will adjourn into a continued special meeting from July 13 to further discuss Measure R, the revision of Measure S that will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Measure R discussion will include a proposed ballot argument in favor of Measure R, and the process and schedule for appointing Bicycle and Fields Advisory committees. The committees would be appointed if voters approve Measure R.

• Lake Tahoe Community College is conducting a survey to see what people want in community education.

• Ed Gurowitz, a management and organizational consultant from Incline Village, has been hired as the TRPA’s interim chief operating officer. He will be responsible for implementing the strategic plan adopted last year.

• Local author Kim Gayner will be signing and discussing her book “Reality 101: A Must Have Guide to Life & Life Skills Survival Manual” at Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe on July 27 at 6pm. This is part of the Midweek at the Marina events each Wednesday. The event is free.

• A biomass facility will not be built at Kings Beach. TRPA Executive Director Joanne Marchetta talks about it in her report to the board for the July 27 meeting.

• Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant — a 1990 South Tahoe High grad — will be giving a talk to area youth July 28 at 9:30am in the theater at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Fire restrictions went into effect Saturday in the Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City District, Sierra Forest Fire Protection District in Carson City and Storey County.

Campfires outside developed campgrounds or picnic areas, smoking outside such areas or vehicles, welding, charcoal grills, open burning and the use of tracer rounds and steel-core ammunition while recreational shooting are all prohibited.

• On July 20 state Sen. Ted Gaines, R-Roseville, filed papers to get rid of the $150 annual firefighting fee for people living in rural areas. Right now the fee is part of the approved budget. People living in rural unincorporated areas of the state would pay the fee — so Meyers residents pay, South Lake Tahoe residents wouldn’t. Here is a link to a map that details areas that pay.

• Performance eyewear Revo and Tahoe Stand Up Paddleboards have partnered on the Tahoe Explore Project, a short-film series inspiring stand up paddleboarders to use the sport as a way to explore global destinations as well as their own backyards.

• Chevis Hosea has been hired as Squaw Valley’s vice president of development.

• Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association is accepting memberships on its website. The annual fee is $10.

• R.O. Anderson engineering firm of Minden is opening an office in South Lake Tahoe, with Coleen Shade the principal planner. A grand opening is slated for September at the Tahoe Keys office in the professional center on Venice Drive.

• The July 25 Douglas County School District board meeting has been canceled.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews expect to begin prescribed fire operations on the south side of the intersection of Pioneer Trail and Highway 50 in Meyers on July 25. Work will continue through Tuesday. The project area is approximately 60 acres and consists of piles of vegetation and woody materials remaining after fuels reduction efforts aimed at reducing wildfire risk to the community. Fuels management crews expect to accomplish 30 acres.

On Monday, the Forest Service will staff a prescribed fire information station at the end of Evelyn Road on the south side of Pioneer Trail. Fire information staff will be available from 8am until 1pm.

El Dorado County Child Abuse Prevention Council is accepting applications for board membership to fill one vacancy serving at the discretion of the Board of Supervisors.

The vacancy is for community representation-community volunteer-civic organization-religious communities.

The 15-member council is a legislatively mandated body advising the Board of Supervisors on issues related to prevention intervention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

• Lake Tahoe Airport’s all-wheel drive, two engine, two stage, rotary snowblower has arrived. The Caterpillar engine is 13 liters, 650 horsepower and 2,100 rpm.

• Former South Lake Tahoe City Manager Kerry Miller is retiring as Folsom’s city manager effective Oct. 15. He was making close to $250,000.

• Aug. 17 is the first day of school in Douglas County. Aug. 29 is the first day for Lake Tahoe Unified.

• Tahoe Youth & Family Service’s celebrates 40 years on July 23 from noon-5pm at the Gardnerville Drop In Center in the Ranchos. There will be a family barbecue, popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream cones and bounce house.

• The Silver Dollar Car Classic in Carson City is Aug. 5-7 in Mills Park.

• John Wagnon, vice president of sales and resort marketing at Heavenly Mountain Resort, is chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s board. He has been on the board since 2005.
