The South Lake Tahoe branch library (1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.) is having a Children’s Holiday Party on Dec. 10 at 2pm.
Join us for an afternoon of family fun:
– Listen to a holiday story
– Sing Christmas carols
– Free picture of children with Santa
– Holiday frames for children to make and decorate
– Refreshments will be provided.
This program is free, however, a non-perishable food item donation to Christmas Cheer is requested.
Sweets will be featured at the Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove on Dec. 17 at 1pm.
Miss Carol will be on hand to help children build gingerbread houses using graham crackers and other sweets. Come to the library to create a fun, edible craft to take home. Children and parents are welcome.
This program is limited to 30 children.
You will be asked to choose a donation from a list of supplies for the program. Supplies must be delivered to the library before 5pm Dec. 15.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library. The library is located at 233 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove.

Sing-along stories make a great gift for young children on your gift list. “In The Meadow (Don’t Feed Our Bears)” and “On the Trail” are two Tahoe stories that use rhythm, rhyme, and repetition to teach nature appreciation and environmental awareness. Christmas, what a wonderful time of year. South Lake Tahoe firefighters would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and to remind you that when decorating your home, please inspect your lighting strings and extension cords for broken, frayed, or damaged wires.
Be careful not to overload an electrical circuit with the use of multiple plug connections or splitters.
Finally, remember to discard your Christmas tree soon after Christmas before it becomes a tinder dry fire hazard.

The El Dorado County Library, South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center and CASA El Dorado are partnering to offer the seventh annual Giving Tree. The tree is up in the South Lake Tahoe branch library and decorated with the holiday wish list ornaments of children who are part of the court system, perhaps in foster care, or living in a shelter as a result of domestic violence in their family.
Here is how you can help with the Giving Tree:
• Pick an ornament from the tree. Or pick more than one.
• Take the ornament(s) and buy what you would like from the list.
• Return the unwrapped gifts to the library no later than 1pm Dec. 10 so Santa has time for wrapping and delivering to kids.
• To return, please put gifts in a bag and secure the ornament tag on the outside of the bag.
These children have wishes, and the community can help their wishes come true.

The Incline Firefighters Association along with the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation is having a charity blackjack tournament Dec. 8 at 8pm at the Hyatt in Incline Village.
The tournament is in conjunction with the 16th annual Paramedic Refresher.
A limited number of spots are available on a first come, first serve basis, with all the proceeds directly benefiting the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.
Cash and other prizes are available for the top finishers.
The Hyatt has donated the space for the tournament and drinks will be provided during playing.
The cost is $40 for conference attendees and $50 for non-conference attendees.

South Lake Tahoe is officially turning the lights on two trees today — at the Y and by the senior center.
Last year was the first time the big tree by the Y was lighted. That will take place at 4:30pm.

For this holiday season, many people suggest shopping locally. The reasons are obvious. But in addition to helping local business owners, why not help local artists as well.
There is a great shop in South Lake Tahoe that offers many gift ideas for under $20. I’m talking about Made in Lake Tahoe at Ski Run Marina. The shop offers only handmade items, by over 50 local artists and crafters.
For $20 or less you can get a beautiful pair of handmade sterling silver earrings made by Range of Light Designs which has been in business in South Lake Tahoe since 2005. Or, how about a clip-framed photo of our beautiful lake, taken by local photographer Richard Matera. They make great gifts to take along when visiting out-of-town friends and family.
Other ideas are knitted scarves and hats, ceramic items, photo cards, feather jewelry, calendars and books. All great choices for under $20.
So have fun shopping, and help your community, too.
