The Nevada Department of Transportation wants the public to comment on future transportation projects.

The Statewide Transportation Improvement Program is a fiscally constrained, four-year planning document containing federal and state-funded transportation projects, as well as regionally significant transportation improvements funded through local and/or state dollars in accordance with the Federal Aid Highway Act and the Federal Transit Act.  These projects include increasing the number of lanes, constructing new roads and intersection improvements along with certain road maintenance projects. It also includes transit, rail, pedestrian walkway and bicycle facility projects.

Public meetings will also give the public an opportunity to provide feedback.

The public can comment on the draft list of projects by going online. Comments are due Aug. 31 by emailing jspencer@dot.nv.gov.

The Placer County Sheriff Office’s search and rescue teams have started their annual telemarketing fundraising drive throughout the county.

Money is being raised to purchase mobile communications equipment for the Lake Tahoe area. Search and rescue volunteers donate thousands of hours each year to locate lost hikers, skiers and anyone else who may need assistance in Placer County’s thousands of acres of wilderness.

Telephone solicitors will be calling Placer County residents to ask for donations. Anyone wishing to make a donation will be sent a pre-addressed envelope. Callers will not ask for credit card information. Donations should only be sent to the following addresses: PO Box 4150, Auburn, CA 95604 or PO Box 1710, Tahoe City, CA 96145.

During past fundraising efforts, another company calling themselves “Search and Rescue Charities” led some donors to believe that they were donating to Placer County. This is not the case and anyone interested in donating to the local search and rescue efforts needs to make sure they are giving to “Placer County Search and Rescue.”

The El Dorado County unit of the California Republican Assembly is having its Victory in 2018  barbecue dinner on Aug. 19 from 4-8 pm at Crystal Springs Garden in Camino.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Garden Valley, will be the guest speaker.

Also speaking will be 6th District Assemblyman Kevin Kiley. He is serving his first term.

·      A benefit concert for Tahoe Arts Project will feature Trey Stone, Niall McGuinness and John Shipley. They will play at Lakeshore Lodge and Spa in South Lake Tahoe on Aug. 24 from 7-9pm. “Doors” open at 6pm. Cost is $10.

·      Music on the Beach, the free concert series at Kings Beach State Recreation Area, has four additional concerts this summer on Fridays through Sept. 1 from 6-8:30pm, excluding Aug. 11.

·      Roger Trout has been appointed director of planning and building for El Dorado County.

·      There will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bijou Marketplace in South Lake Tahoe on Aug. 7 at 2pm. This is the project at Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard where Whole Foods 365 will go.

·      Karin Holmes will be the interim principal at Sierra House Elementary School starting this school year. Taking her spot as assistant principal at South Tahoe Middle School will be Alana Cayabyab (also on an interim basis.) She teaches second grade in the two-way immersion program at Bijou Community School. The changes are because Ryan Galles left earlier this summer. It is difficult to find school administrators in the summer.

·      Caltrans has restriped the Highway 28 crosswalks in Kings Beach, including one location that has not been striped for some time — at Secline Street.

·      The Sugar Pine Foundation has partnered with Vail Resorts to plant Western white pines at Northstar on Aug. 6 from 10am to 1pm. Meet at the lower parking area, Castle Peak lot at 10 am. Bring water, sunscreen and a snack. Wear closed toed shoes and long pants. Planting supplies and seedlings will be provided.

·      The 22nd annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is Oct. 13-15. The weekend features multiple marathons with choices of 5K or 10k, half marathon, 18-milers, 144 milers around the lake or a four-day, 288 mile run. There’s a children’s run, plus swim and kayak competitions, and dozens of competitions to choose from. For more info, go online.

·      David Young of Barton Cardiology will give a free lecture on supplements and cardiovascular disease, including information about CoQ10, fish oils, vitamin D, and calcium supplementation. The talk is Aug. 2, 6-7pm in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

·      Cemetery Gin won a Silver Award at the San Francisco 2017 Worlds Spirits Competition. Cemetery Gin is 100 percent made and produced in Nevada. The spirt is distilled and bottled by Frey Ranch of Fallon and distributed to Virginia City local watering holes along with retail outlets throughout Northern Nevada through Southern Wine and Spirits. 

·      Kylie Shepherd is Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s newest deputy. She grew up in Lyon County, and attended Western Nevada College where she earned AA degrees in applied science in criminal justice. She will be assigned to the jail division.

·      On Aug. 23 from 9am-noon there will be informational meeting regarding tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination near the Y. The Lahontan Water Board meets at 971 Silver Dollar Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

·      Incline Village’s Alibi Ale Works now has a location in downtown Truckee. This location includes a kitchen and stage.
