·      Eyes on Lake Tahoe, a component of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, is having a training Aug. 16 from 4-6pm at the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association office. Volunteers will focus their efforts on aquatic invasive plants.

·      The parking debacle at Fitness Evolution in South Lake Tahoe may so soon improve. The fitness center is expanding its parking next to Izzy’s.

·      TRYP will host a networking mixer Aug. 15 from 5:30-8:30pm at Village Pub in Incline Village. One free drink and complimentary appetizers will be provided for attendees. It’s free for members, $10 for others.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals is hosting a town hall about homelessness.

It will be Aug. 30, 6-7:30pm at Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

There will be a panel of experts addressing local homelessness issues, including the impact of services for the homeless like Lake Tahoe Warm Room, causes of homelessness including the housing crisis, and public safety concerns.

The public will be able to ask questions.

There will be a community information meeting Aug. 17 about the Sierra Boulevard complete streets project.

Preliminary plans call for a class 1 mixed use recreational trail, sidewalk, driveway connections, curbs, gutters, drainage system, and storm water infiltration and treatment. Class 2 bike lanes are proposed for each side of the road. Lighting will be erected. On street parking will be available in some locations.

The meeting will begin at 5:30pm at Sierra Community Church on Sierra Boulevard.

This will be an opportunity for the public to voice ideas and concerns.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s Senior Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy will be Sept. 11-15.

Registration is open for people interested in attending the academy and learning about law enforcement. Students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County. Students attending the academy will learn about topics such as uniformed patrol procedures, jail and custody procedures, investigations, crime scene processing, along with gang and narcotics investigations. Information on volunteer opportunities and crime prevention methods, along with recent scam information will be a part of the curriculum.

The weeklong academy is from 1-5pm each day. The class is at the Minden Judicial Center.

The class size is limited to 30 students. The academy is offered free of charge. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background investigation, and may not have been convicted of a felony.

There will be a free concert under the stars on Aug. 25 from 6-10pm at the Veterans Healing Camp property located on Highway 50 in Silver Springs.

Veterans Healing Camp is dedicated to helping our local veterans make a successful transition from military to civilian life. The mission is to provide a safe place for fun, activities, and fellowship for veterans.

Now through Aug. 14, law enforcement throughout Nevada will be Joining Forces issuing citations to pedestrians and motorists who are breaking traffic safety laws.

Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic-control signs and signals. If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.

For motorists, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.

Pedestrian safety is the responsibility of the pedestrian and the motorist. Nevada consistently ranks among the 10 worst states for pedestrian fatalities. Nearly 90 percent of pedestrian and drivers involved in fatal crashes are local residents, not tourists.

The No. 2 westbound lane of Interstate 80 between Donner Summit and Colfax will be closed between Gold Run and Cape Horn in the “3-Mile Grade” area from on Aug. 10 from 7am to 4pm while Caltrans performs maintenance activities.

Approximately seven miles of the right lane will be closed to perform guardrail repair to a recently damaged section.

Because there are only two lanes on this length of Interstate 80, motorists are likely to experience traffic delays and are encouraged to plan for additional travel time through the area. California Highway Patrol will be escorting traffic through the work zone to keep speeds safe for Caltrans workers on this curvy, steep stretch of freeway.

Roadwork over Echo Summit will cause delays this week.

Caltrans will be performing overnight grinding and paving work on Highway 50 on a section of the roadway that descends after Echo Summit into the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Work to repair rough sections of the highway will be performed at various locations between Johnson Pass Road and Apache Avenue in Meyers.

Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8pm to 8am through Friday morning.

The USDA Rural Development has about $2.8 million for rural low-income home buyers.

The Direct 502 Home Loan Program is available in all areas of Nevada except Carson City and metropolitan Clark and Washoe counties.

Applicants must fill out a two-page form to determine eligibility.
