The Placer County Indian Gaming Local Community Benefit Committee has been allocated $67,853.22 from the state controller to distribute in the form of grants for programs and activities designed to mitigate the impacts of gaming upon the community.

As required by state law, the committee was formed in 2005 to award grant funds to local government agencies from the Indian Gaming Distribution Fund to help offset impacts associated with Indian gaming such as traffic enforcement and family wellness.

The grant application period is open until 5pm March 28.

South Lake Tahoe has low interest amortized or deferred payment loans available to eligible owner-occupied single family homeowners.

The Housing Rehabilitation Program has financing available for: roof repairs, heating, plumbing, flooring, insulating and more.

The loan terms are based upon an applicant’s  income, personal circumstances and ability to repay.

This program is available to those who: h ave a home located within the city limits and meet the eligible low income requirements.

South Lake Tahoe Community Services Department is putting on a workshop to review the special events guidelines for future events.

Public feedback and participation is encouraged at the March 14 3pm meeting at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center, Cedar Room.

The City Council on March 20 is expected to have a workshop on the same topic, with action possibly being taken in April.

Last fall several community based organizations met to discuss how to reduce duplication of efforts regarding donations to children/families.

At that meeting the group suggested getting together in the spring. That follow-up meeting has been set for The follow-up meeting has been scheduled for March 29, 2:30-4pm at the El Dorado County Office of Education, 6767 Green Valley Road, Placerville, conference room B2.

South Lake Tahoe officials will be meeting with residents and business owners in the neighborhoods of South Y Industrial, Bonanza, Barton, airport and Winnemucca on March 20.

The 6pm meeting is in the City Council Chambers located at 1901 Airport Road.

South Lake Tahoe is broken into 20 neighborhoods. They have been combined into six “super” neighborhoods when it came to creating Neighborhood Service Team Areas.

Let’s Read Together Storytime is a family based storytime with early learning reading tips.

Each family will go home with a new copy of the featured book. Families must preregister for the March 17 11am storytime that is conducted at the South Lake Tahoe library because space is limited.

• Caesars Entertainment for the fourth consecutive year will participate in the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour on March 31 from 8:30-9:30pm. Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harveys in Stateline will participate in shutting off non-essential exterior lighting and marquees for that hour.

• Hotel prices in the Tahoe-Reno area are 22 percent below 2011 rates for this time of year because of the lack of snow, according to Hotwire.

Dream Spirit Baroque Band will present a concert of Celtic music in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 from 7:30-9:30pm at the Toccata Center for the Performing Arts.

The band features a mix of instruments — violin, cello, guitar and mandolin.

The audience may sing-along to “Danny Boy” and “Whiskey in the Jar” or try the open mic with an Irish song.

Bring a dessert to share. Cover charge is $15.

The Nevada Division of Forestry is conducting prescribed burns at Tunnel Creek in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park backcountry from March through May, weather permitting.

Tunnel Creek road from Highway 28 to Tunnel Creek Station may be closed in order to conduct the burns. Signs will be posted throughout the area when burns are being conducted. Nearly 100 acres are being treated in 15 phases.

The burns are part of ongoing fuels treatment and forest restoration efforts in the Lake Tahoe area.

The Tunnel Creek burns are being conducted by the Nevada Division of Forestry in cooperation with the Division of State Parks, Division of State Lands and the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.
