Lake Valley firefighters have $100,000 to help property owners in the North Upper Truckee neighborhood to clear away hazardous fuels – as in overgrown trees and brush.

The grant from the state via Proposition 40 can only be used to work on vacant lots. A matching fee of $600 from the property owner is required, though Lake Valley has no cap on what it will spend per property.

No trees with a diameter of more than 14 inches will be removed. And work will only be for fire hazard mitigation.

An email scam is just that — a scam, the U.S. Postal Service warns.

The email appears to be from the post office talking about package delivery or possible online charges, but when people click on the link it installs a virus that can steal personal information.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to burn the understory near Grover’s Hot Spring State Park in the next week.

Approximately 33 acres of understory vegetation will be treated to reduce build-up of trees and brush that can cause more intense wildland fires.

Fire crews are currently monitoring weather conditions to identify time frames that would be suitable for effective prescribed burning of brush and understory vegetation. This controlled burn will only be implemented when specific weather conditions permit.

Visitors and residents can expect to see smoke in the Markleeville area when the controlled burn occurs.

In 1988 the South Tahoe Association of Realtors established a scholarship fund to be awarded in the memory of Barbara Kelly, a past president of the board and a founding member of the STAR scholarship committee. This tradition continues today with a few changes. More graduating seniors in the South Tahoe community are eligible to apply. This change is to demonstrate STAR’s commitment to supporting all youth in the community who wish to pursue higher education.

Below are the minimum qualifications of applicants:

All graduating seniors within the South Shore community, including children of STAR agents and affiliate members, are eligible to apply;

Applicant must be bound for college or trade school;

Applicant is highly encouraged to be active in extracurricular activities and/or community service;

Applicant must submit a letter stating his or her short- or long-term goals;

Applicant must submit an application in writing;

A letter of recommendation must be received from someone other than a relative;

The scholarship committee must interview the applicant.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews continue prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade near Andria Drive this week, weather permitting.

Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area. The Forest Service strives to minimize the impacts of smoke on local communities. Smoke-sensitive residents should consider staying indoors and keeping doors, windows and outside vents closed. To directly receive prescribed fire updates, send an email to pa_ltbmu@fs.fed.us.

Forest Service staff will post road signs around areas affected by prescribed fire, and update the local fire information line at (530) 543.2600, No. 6. Other federal, state and local fire management agencies may also be conducting prescribed fire work during this period.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust benefit dinner at the River Ranch is June 7.

The restaurant will donate 30 percent of of the evening’s proceeds to the land trust. Reservations (530.583.4264) must be made at least a day in advance, and diners must say they are dining for the Truckee Donner Land Trust.

The event is from 6-9pm. River Ranch is on the corner of Highway 89 and Alpine Meadows Road.

The event is at the Yacht Club Room in Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe.
