·      Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., is hosting a veterans’ town hall meeting on Aug. 29, 10am-noon at the Douglas County Courthouse in Minden. Reps from several federal agencies will be in attendance.

·      Douglas County in partnership with OpenGov has launched what they call a transparency portal to increase government accountability and improve access to public information.

·      The Village at Squaw Valley continues its longstanding tradition of raising a glass to Labor Day weekend with the 29th annual Alpen Wine Fest. In years past, this festival has raised more than $40,000 for Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, a nonprofit providing supportive and empowering programs for people and families living with Multiple Sclerosis. ·      The South Shore joins the cities of Reno, Carson City and Virginia City in participating at the annual Street Vibrations rally on Sept. 27-Oct. MontBleu will be part of the poker run activities on Sept. 28-29, and will host the grand finale on Oct. 1.

Women As Change Makers, a one-day summit featuring the region’s best and brightest women, will delve into what it really take to grow a business, nurture a career, find balance, and forge lasting relationships.

·      Warren Miller’s “Line of Descent” ski movie will be at the Squaw Valley conference center at the Olympic Valley Lodge on Nov. 24-25 and at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Dec. 1-2. All shows are at 7:30pm.

·      Douglas County sheriff’s Deputy Ignacio (Nacho) Gonzales is back working as a jail training officer after returning from his fourth deployment overseas. As part of the Army National Guard he was in Kuwait for 12 months supervising soldiers who were securing the borders. 

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care will open the gate to the new wildlife center that is under construction on Al Tahoe Boulevard on Aug. 27 from 11am until 2pm to show people what has been done on the property. 

Most of the work has been underground, however, all perimeter foundations are complete. The next step is framing of the buildings and cages. 

LTWC volunteers and staff will be on hand to answer questions and show renditions of what each each cage will look like. 

Food will be available to purchase and this is also a time to donate to the cause so the project can be completed.

·      Youngsters will have a new place to spend Halloween. Trick and Retreat – it’s the Beach Retreat’s answer to going door-to-door in neighborhoods. Instead kids will go room-to-room on Oct. 31 from 6-8pm at the South Lake Tahoe hotel to get candy. These will be specially designated and decorated rooms, not occupied guest rooms.

·      Michael Franti & Spearhead will be at MontBleu in Stateline on Sept. 15 at 8pm.

·      Mike Domino from Surprise, Ariz., on Aug. 17 hit a hole-in-one on the second hole at Bijou Municipal Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

·      North Tahoe Public Utility District is having meetings Aug. 23 and Sept. 7, both 5:30-7:30pm, regarding the draft final lease agreement with Laulima Kings Beach Event Center to operate and manage the North Tahoe Event Center.

The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., is coming to the Carson Valley in 2018.

It will be at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden from May 31 to June 6. It will be erected on the back lawn. 

People will be able to view the wall 24 hours a day.
