Iron Mountain Secure Shredding will be at St. Theresa School (1041 Lyons Road, South Lake Tahoe) on May 12 from 10am to 1pm to shred people’s old files.
Iron Mountain is donating its services in hopes people make a donation to St. Theresa School.

El Dorado County Registrar of Voters Bill Schultz is ushering in a new era of helping people in the military and overseas citizens cast a ballot.
A $1.8 million federal grant to El Dorado County will allow El Dorado and 12 other California counties to send ballots and voting information electronically to these voters.
The counties’ consortium, known as Cal E-Promise, will provide an easy to use, online interface for voters to access their ballot at their convenience. This is especially important for deployed military voters who may have unpredictable schedules.
Current law does not allow voters to mark the ballot online or return the ballot by email. Electronically delivered ballots must be mailed or faxed back to the Elections Department.
El Dorado County’s military and overseas citizens may access their ballot electronically by going to the Elections Department’s Military and Overseas Voters website.

• Harcourts NV1 Realty recently made two donations to Austin’s House (the only emergency children’s shelter in rural Northern Nevada) – a four-wheel drive vehicle, and supplies and labor to replace the floors in the kitchen, mudroom and hallways.
Kitchen fires are frequent and preventable. Every year there are millions of kitchen fires in the Unite States. Most of them are small, but fires of this kind kill about 400 people every year.
They can be prevented by practicing the following safety rules: keep stoves and ovens free of grease; do not wear loose clothing when you cook, and make sure young children are always supervised in the kitchen.
The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department urges you to keep your home fire safe.

Five South Shore businesses are donating a portion of their proceeds in May to the Zawadisha Fund.
“She is Beautiful Lake Tahoe” is about locals honoring themselves or those they care about, while supporting Kenyan women and children as they learn life saving self-defense skills and gain economic independence through micro-loans.
The Zawadisha Fund provides financial and technical assistance to the Kenyan NGO “Dolphin” for their self-defense and AIDS education workshops and has also implemented an innovative micro-loan and savings programs for women in Eldoret, Kenya. The mission is to improve and empower the lives of women and children in Kenya.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration officials will accept unwanted prescription on April 28 from 10am-2pm at Safeway in South Lake Tahoe located at 1020 Johnson Blvd.
By providing a place to dispose of medications, officials hope to help prevent abuse of prescription medication. The service is free and anonymous.
• Green Drinks is about bringing like-minded people together in a social setting the last Wednesday of every month at the Divided Sky in Meyers from 6-8pm. (That would be tonight.) This is a monthly gathering of environmentally conscience people. The gathering is open to anyone who works in, cares about, or is even remotely interested in sustainability.

Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week will kick off April 28 at Mills Park in Carson City.
The event runs from 10am to 2pm and gives people a chance to talk to local firefighters, learn how to use a fire extinguisher, discuss insurance questions and visit with vendors displaying products and services.
There will also be activities for children, including meeting Smokey Bear, visiting the Fire Safety House and playing at the Ember House, which illustrates how flying embers can be lodged in various places.
They can also explore firefighting helicopters and fire engines.
