Meyers is hosting a Summer Solstice Celebration on June 23 from 2-6pm.

This family-centered event is designed to bring together the healing, artistic and recreational cultures of the Lake Tahoe Basin in a community street fair. Activities will include a parade, live music, art cars, food, children’s recreation and booths featuring local artists and healers.

The celebration is free and open to the public.

The theme of the solstice celebration is “fire,” to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Angora Fire and the community’s ability to unite.

Costumes, bicycles, strollers and all non-motorized vehicles will be encouraged around this theme. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume and join the 4pm parade at 3170 Highway 50.

Meyers residents and community leaders are invited to attend a “Community Identity” session on May 30 to help guide and enhance the Meyers Community Identity as a framework for the next steps in land use planning including establishing community design standards.

The session will be informal.

The term “community identity” means different things to different people. Community identity can be broadly defined as a community of interest or an emotional attachment or sense of belonging to a geographic area.

The session will be at the Lake Valley Fire Station, 2211 Keetak St., Meyers, from 6:30-8:30pm.

The Tahoe City Parks and Recreation is in the beginning stages of launching a program for active and mature adults.

The department received a grant donation from the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation to purchase computers, games, exercise weights and more. In addition, special day outings and bingo events are being planned.

On June 13, the Tahoe City Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a dinner social for seniors to see what is being offered, meet other seniors in the community, and enjoy a meal. Dinner is $5 per person and will include main course, sides and beverages. The event will kick off at 4:30pm at Rideout Community Center.

Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program was created in an effort to preemptively reduce the incidence of teen injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

Teen drivers and their parents/guardians are invited to attend and participate in a Start Smart class. Recent statistics have shown that in California teenage drivers are injured and are dying in automobile accidents at an alarming rate. Through candid conversations, officers in attendance will address these facts and provide examples of driving tendencies that put young drivers at risk.

The next class is May 29 from 6-8pm at South Tahoe High School library. All classes are free and last approximately two hours.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is accepting applications for individuals to serve on the 2013-15 Lake Tahoe Basin Federal Advisory Committee.

Applications will be accepted until July 20.

Individuals interested in taking an active role in Lake Tahoe issues are encouraged to apply.

The committee provides a critical role in advising the secretary of Agriculture and Lake Tahoe’s Federal Interagency Partnership on programs and funds to achieve the goals of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program.

Twenty LTFAC members will be selected to represent the Lake Tahoe Basin. Two representatives will be selected as members-at-large, and one representative will be selected from each of the following sectors: 1) gaming, 2) environmental, 3) national environmental, 4) ski resorts, 5) North Shore economic/recreation, 6) South Shore economic/recreation, 7) resorts associations, 8) education, 9) property rights advocates, 10) science and research, 11) California local government, 12) Washoe Tribe, 13) California, 14) Nevada, 15) Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, 16) labor, 17) transportation, and 18) Nevada local government.

Appointments will be made by the U.S. secretary of Agriculture.
