Sierra Nevada College is hosting Transfer Student Advising Days on July 18 and Aug. 1 for students to have their transcripts evaluated by a faculty adviser and determine an estimated timeline for graduation.

Requirements to transfer in two years are 60 total transferable credits, 12 credits that meet core requirements, 18 credits that meet major requirements and major declaration when registering for initial term.

Students who wish to apply for Fall 2012 can still do so for free in person or online. Applications completed at the advising day will be reviewed by the Office of Admissions and an acceptance decision will be made that same day.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has re-launched its Heroes Now & Forever campaign to raise another $1 million dollars to build its new shelter.

The Truckee Town Council recently voted to contribute $3.5 million to the project; additionally the town has donated land for the building site. The non-profit has raised $2.4 million so far.

Built to house eight dogs and 30 cats, the current shelter cannot accommodate the growing population HSTT cares for, which can number 25 dogs and up to 70 cats at any given time.

Tahoe Rim Trail Association is conducting Women’s Backpacking 101, an all female group event to learn skills and techniques for staying safe and comfortable in the backcountry.

The program will cover backpacking basics, including trip planning; how to pack; bear awareness; campsite selection and set up; meal preparation; and Leave No Trace principles. Attendees must be able to hike four or more miles per day at elevation with a 20-30 pound backpack. Participants must provide all of their own gear, food and clothing. Some gear can be rented for a small fee from the TRTA.

The trip is July 28-29 and is limited to 10 participants. The TRTA is holding a similar program open to both men and women on Aug. 25-26.

The Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove is hosting “Bats are Cool” on July 20 at 1:30 pm.

The event is presented by Northern California Bats, a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of bats throughout Northern California. NorCalBats will bring live bats to the library and talk about the importance of bats as insect control. In addition, they will explain the environmental benefits of bats, and dispel fears and myths that lead to the deaths of bat colonies.

The Wa She Shu It Deh Native American Arts Festival is being held July 28-29 from 10am to 5pm at the Valhalla Grand Lawn, Tallac Historic Site.

The event  features traditional American Indian dancers and drum performers, basket weaving displays, art and food.

Sponsored by the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, this event is free and open to the public. Donations accepted.

Sports Concussions is the topic of Jonathan Finnoff’s lecture on Aug. 1 from 6-7pm at Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe.

Finnoff is an advocate for making sure athletes and others know about the danger of concussions.

Finnoff is an internationally recognized concussion expert and former co-director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center Concussion Program. He now works at Tahoe Center for Orthopedics in South Lake Tahoe.

Volunteers are needed for the 23rd annual Lake in the Sky Air Show on Aug. 24-26.

Four hour volunteer shifts are available from 7am-11am, 11am to 3pm and 3pm-6pm on Aug. 25. Volunteers completing four volunteer hours will receive a free meal and admission to the event.

Shift assignments will be designated closer to the event.

The Tahoe Truckee region was named an All-America City by the National Civic League recently based on its program the Tahoe Truckee Read Campaign to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

Chosen from a field of more than 100 entries, Tahoe Truckee’s plan was submitted by a community coalition that included the Excellence in Education Foundation, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Placer County Health and Human Services and First 5 Nevada County.

The community was one of 14 awardees selected from 32 finalists.
