Relay for Life in Stateline if full of various events that are designed to recognize those with cancer and those who have survived, as well as caregivers.

The event is at Kahle Community Park on Aug. 11 from 11am-11pm.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to come for the opening ceremony at 11am, with a free lunch at 12:30pm. There will be live entertainment, a disc jockey, bounce house for kids and more activities.

At 7pm is the Canine for Cure Parade. Cost is $10. Dress your dog and yourselves in the Magic of Disney theme. Luminary bags are $10. At sunset, the bags will be lighted.

All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

The quonset hut Lakeside Theatre was about midway between today’s Applebee’s Restaurant and the Park Avenue stoplight in South Lake Tahoe.

So much snow in winter 1953 makes it hard to get to the theater.

Highway 50 then was only a narrow two-lane mountain road, thus more frontage area as seen in these pictures.

This building was demolished by 1963 and a beautiful new Lakeside Theatre (not quonset) opened near the Y in November 1963.

It was razed in about 2000 and the site now is CVS next to McDonald’s.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites the public to Smokey Bear’s 68th birthday party at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on Aug. 9 at 2pm.

“Sign Smokey’s birthday card, sing to Smokey and learn more about Smokey’s message and origin,” said Ranger Jean Norman. “Cake will be provided until it’s all gone.”

The party will be held on the patio at the Visitor Center.

• TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe is opening Oct. 14. (The stores are called TK Maxx in England.) There’s a good chance the company won’t advertise with Lake Tahoe News because this national corporation wanted favoritism at the expense of local advertisers. LTN‘s publisher said not a chance.

• The Carson Valley Inn is celebrating its 28th birthday Aug. 19-24.

• Trail runner Gary Gellin this month will attempt to break the speed record on the Tahoe Rim Trail. The record was set in 2009 by Spaniard speed runner Kilian Jornet who ran the entire 165 miles in 38 hours and 32 minutes. Gellin will begin his run Aug. 13.

• A submersible that is part of the Undersea Voyager Project lead by Capt. Scott Cassell is sitting in the lobby of Embassy Suites South Lake Tahoe. In September the Undersea Voyager Project will conduct a series of 60 submersible dives in 30 days using this submersible.

• Lake Tahoe Community Colleges’ Connect Ed is offering stand up paddleboard for kids and women this month. Go online for details and to register.

The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet from 9am to noon Aug. 9 at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe.

Items on the agenda include an update on Lake Tahoe Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act projects, a presentation from the Sugar Pine Foundation, and public comment. Members of the public interested in finding out more about the LTFAC are welcome to attend the meeting.

LTFAC consists of 20 members representing a broad array of constituencies.
