In 1970, Marian McQuade began a campaign to establish a day to honor grandparents. But such a day was not formally established until 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed a federal proclamation, approving the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.

Since Sept. 9, 1979, it has been celebrated every year in honor of our nation’s grandparents with whom one in 10 of all children in the U.S. live.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 7 million people had grandchildren younger than 18 were living with them in 2010. The number of grandparents responsible for the basic needs of one or more grandchildren under 18 living with them in 2010 was 2.7 million. Of these caregivers, 1.7 million were grandmothers and 1 million were grandfathers.

The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners is sponsoring a meeting to discuss trash laws specific to Washoe, Carson and Douglas counties in Nevada, and potential solutions to any perceived deficiencies in those laws.

The meeting is Sept. 10 at 5pm at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, Rooms 139, 141, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village.

The committee will hear a presentation of the Bear Smart Community program that has been used to address bear-related conflicts in other communities. The committee will take input from the public and discuss the potential for establishing a similar program in Nevada.

There will be a Patriots Day observance Sept. 11 at 5pm at American Legion Post No. 795 in South Lake Tahoe.

The public is welcome.

The legion is on Highway 50, where the Tuesday farmers’ market is.

The 22nd annual Lake Tahoe Toy Run is Oct. 6. All proceeds benefit Christmas Cheer.

Line up at Horizon casino in Stateline at 10am that Saturday, with departure at noon to Brother’s Bar & Grill at 888 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe. Entry fee is one new toy.

Unity at the Lake will join Silent Unity, an international, trans-denominational 24/7 prayer ministry, and spiritual communities worldwide on Sept. 13 for the 19th annual Unity World Day of Prayer.

Unity at the Lake will be having a silent prayer vigil from 8am-5pm. The entire community is invited to come by during that time (for however long) and center in an energy of love and peace.

Who should be elected to the South Lake Tahoe City Council? Voters will answer that question Nov. 6.

Live Violence Free, formerly the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, is opening its doors for the community to meet Executive Director Frank Blakeney.
