On Oct. 6, Douglas County Emergency Management and Carson City Health & Human Services, along with several community partners, are hosting a free drive-through flu shot clinic at Douglas High School in Minden.
This event is open to the general public.
The flu shot and the nasal spray will be available.
The clinic is from 9am to 1pm.
Nevada children are invited to showcase their artistic talents to promote radon awareness by entering the 2013 Nevada Radon Poster Contest by Oct. 15.
The contest is open to children ages 9-14 who are enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense, or home school. Children can also enter through a sponsoring club, such as an art, computer, reading, science, scouting organization, or 4-H club.
Entries are free, but are limited to one entry per child.
Posters should follow these five topics: 1) What is radon? 2) Where does radon come from? 3) How does radon get into our homes? 4) Radon can cause lung cancer, and 4) Test your home for radon.
Cash prizes for the top five Nevada entries are: $80 for first place, $60 for second, $40 for third and $20 for fourth and fifth place winners. The top three Nevada poster entries are also awarded cash prizes for their teachers, or sponsoring organization’s representative, and are entered in the national contest. National contest winners receive $1,000 for first place, $600 for second, $400 for third, and $400 for special online voting recognition.
National winners will receive recognition and the posters will be reproduced and distributed nationally to promote radon awareness.

Austin’s House, an emergency children’s shelter located centrally near the Douglas/Carson border, is celebrating five years of providing compassionate care for children in crisis by launching its inaugural annual campaign the 2012 Appeal for Kids.
The facility was built entirely with donations from our generous community and opened in September 2007.
The community support has been tremendous, but raising the funds necessary to take care of children in crisis who must be removed from their homes is always a challenge for Austin’s House.
Austin’s House board is looking to improve the situation by supplementing fundraising efforts with more repetitive giving going forward.
As part of the campaign there are giving levels for every budget. The Daily Club is a $100 donation that will care for one child for one day. Other donation levels include the Food Club, Professional Club, and the Go Green Club. These plans pay for a major annual expense such as groceries, insurance, or utilities. Room sponsorship is another giving option.

Caltrans is alerting motorists that up to 15-minute delays are expected on Highway 267 near Northstar on Wednesday and Thursday.
Crews will continue grinding and paving from shoulder to shoulder as part of a maintenance project.
Delays Oct 3-4 will be from 7am to 5pm. Expect one-way traffic controls from Highland View Road to Northstar Drive.

Inspector: $100 for the day, plus training class pay.
Judge: $90 for the day, plus training class pay.
Clerks: $85 for the day, plus training pay if you attend.

Medicare expert Margaret Reilly will host a community forum explaining Medicare and health insurance on Oct. 3 from 12:30-2pm at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation facility located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.
This meeting is for anyone who currently has or is soon to have Medicare as their primary health insurance. This meeting should also be helpful for anyone who helps relatives or friends with Medicare.
Reilly is the program manager for HICAP, California’s Health Insurance Assistance Program, and is an expert on Medicare.
There is no cost to attend this event.
Placer County is having a town hall meeting on the Lake Tahoe Basin Community Plan update on Oct. 17 in Kings Beach.
The meeting will take place at 6pm in the North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Blvd.
The meeting will be a chance for community members to learn more about the update process, the status of the community plan update, and the work being done by the county’s community plan working groups.
Placer County currently has nine community plans for the Tahoe basin. Most are joint planning documents developed about 20 years ago by the county and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
TRPA is in the process of updating its Regional Plan, and all community plans within the Tahoe basin must be consistent with the Regional Plan.
Through its update process, Placer County intends to consolidate the nine plans into a single policy document with four planning areas. Each planning area will have its own distinct zoning ordinance and community-specific design guidelines.
The four planning areas include:
• North Tahoe East, which covers Kings Beach and the state line community;
• Greater Tahoe City, which includes Tahoe City, Tahoe City Gateway, Lake Forest, and Dollar Hill;
• North Tahoe West, which includes Carnelian Bay and Tahoe Vista; and
• The West Shore, which includes Sunnyside, Homewood and Tahoma.
