The Truckee Police Department recently completed a review and contact of registered sex offenders living in town.

People convicted of certain sex offenses are required by California law to register with the law enforcement agency of jurisdiction where they live. There are currently six registered sex offenders living in Truckee.

Each was contacted by officers who verified the registrant’s residence address and verified that the residence was not within 2000 feet of schools or daycare facility within town.

The number of sex offenders living in Truckee varies over time. Offenders are required to register with the law enforcement agency of a community they are moving to as well as the law enforcement agency of the community they are moving from.

Truckee officers do periodic unannounced compliance reviews to ensure complete compliance of offenders with all requirements of the law.

Nevada Day festivities Oct. 25-28 will celebrate the 148th year since joining the union with the theme Honoring Our Military and Families Past, Present and Future.

Nevada’s observance is recognized as the largest all-statehood celebration in the Nation.

Along with carnival rides, music, comedy, street parties and Saturday’s famed Nevada Day Parade, the lineup includes the addition of a Battle Born Days Celebration with a salute to America’s military that includes a traveling Vietnam Wall, living history re-enactments, tributes and military honors, aircraft and weapon displays, a USO dance and Bomber Girl Pin-Up Pageant.

Chris Alper, South Lake Tahoe local for 33 years, was recently diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer. She has worked at the local car dealership Cardinale Way Toyota (formerly Shehadi Motors) for more than 14 years.

Two surgeries last month have left her in need of assistance with medical bills and living expenses during her recuperation and treatment.

A series of fund-raising events have been planned:

Oct. 25: Primo’s Italian Bistro (2180 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe ) will donate 10 percent of its dinner proceeds from 5-9pm.

Oct. 30: Passaretti’s Italian Restaurant (1181 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe) will donate a percentage of dinner proceeds.

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association is hosting the 2012 Transit Summit on Oct. 26 from 8am-3pm at the Truckee Tahoe Airport

The keynote speaker is Walter Kieser of EPS, with offices in California and Colorado, who brings 35 years of land planning and urban economic experience.

A discussion panel will address “The State of Transportation in the North Lake Tahoe Region” and will include representatives from Placer County, Washoe County, Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, Truckee Tomorrow, as well as local ski areas.

The lunch panel will present “The Challenges of Moving People in a Resort Community” and will include Transit Manager Lynn Rumbaugh of Aspen, Colorado; Public Works Director Kent Cashell of Park City, Utah; and Assistant County Manager Thad Noll of Summit County, Colo. After lunch, Kieser will facilitate a discussion among attendees about developing a transit vision and identifying next steps.

The Douglas County Public Library in Minden and Zephyr Cove will be closed Oct. 26-27 for Nevada Day.

The Minden Library will reopen Oct. 29 at 10am. The Zephyr Cove Library will resume its normal schedule Oct. 31 at 11am.

Small World is sponsoring a meet and greet with the five South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates on Oct. 22.

It will be at 6:30pm at 2191 Shasta Court.

Four of five candidates have confirmed.

There will be about a 45-minute segment for questions from Small World members and other attendees.

South Lake Tahoe is soliciting for applications for the Airport Land Use Commission, Building-ADA Board of Appeals and Planning Commission.

Applications may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday. They are due Dec. 14.

The City Council will be making the appointments at the second meeting in January.

The deadline to submit entries to the 2013 Nevada radon poster contest has been extended to Oct. 30.

It is open to all children ages 9-14 who are enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense, and home school. Children can also enter through a sponsoring club, such as an art, computer, reading, science, scouting organization, or 4-H club. Entries are free, but are limited to one per child.

Posters should follow these five topics: 1) What is radon? 2) Where does radon come from? 3) How does radon get into our homes? 4) Radon can cause lung cancer, and 4) Test your home for radon.

Live Violence Free’s 35th Sunset Gala is Oct. 21 from 5-8pm at Edgewood Tahoe in Stateline.

The event will feature dishes from the Harrah’s/Harveys, MontBleu and Lakeside Inn chefs as well as wines from El Dorado County and desserts from Cakes by Grace and Lake Tahoe Chocolate Factory.

There will be silent and live auctions.

All proceeds from the event help keep Live Violence Free’s domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse services running. Tickets are on sale for $50 online.
