Knee injury prevention is key to staying active all winter.

Orthopedic surgeon Robert Rupp and Ryan Solberg, M.S.P.T., on Dec. 6 at 6pm will give a talk about knee injury awareness, as well as surgical and non-surgical approaches to injury treatment.

The lecture will be at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village (Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, Room 139).

AAA projects 43.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 43.3 million people who traveled last year. This increase marks the fourth consecutive year of growing holiday travelers.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Nov. 21-25.

Ninety percent of those travelers, or 39.1 million, will travel by automobile, an increase of 0.6 percent

AAA estimates the national average price of gasoline will drop to between $3.25-3.40 a gallon by the holiday, similar to last year’s average of $3.32, which was the most expensive average ever on Thanksgiving. Despite the historically high prices paid by motorists this year, the national average has declined by nearly 40 cents a gallon since early October and should continue to drop through the end of the year, according to AAA. The national average price of gas for Thanksgiving from 2007-11 was $2.75 a gallon.

AAA asked intended travelers which days they would depart for and return from Thanksgiving travel. Among those surveyed, the majority of travelers plan to leave the Wednesday before the holiday (45 percent) and return the following Sunday (36 percent), with another 25 percent expecting to return Nov. 26.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 24th annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at MontBleu on Nov. 16-17.

Proceeds will benefit the foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students.

The Swap opens with Moonlight Madness on Nov. 16 from 6-11pm. Admission for adults is $5, children 12 and under are free.

The savings continue on Nov. 17 from 10am to 5pm; admission is free.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District will have seven vacancies on the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee on Jan. 31.

The following reps are needed:

· A person active in a senior citizens’ organization.

· A person active in a bona fide taxpayers’ association.

· A person active in the South Tahoe Association of Realtors.

· An at-large member of the community.

· A parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district.

· A parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district and active in a parent-teacher organization or school site council.

· A person active in the construction industry in South Lake Tahoe.

Candidates must be at least 18 and reside within the district’s boundaries. Employees, officials, vendors, contractors, or consultants of the district are ineligible.

The 2nd annual Breakfast with Santa & Craft Bazaar at Rideout Community Center in Tahoe City is Dec. 1 from 8:30am-12:30pm.

On Nov. 14 from 8am to approximately 11am, the Department of Public Safety-Capitol Police Division will be conducting a full scale exercise of its emergency preparedness at Nevada’s Capitol.

The exercise will involve all employees assigned to the Nevada State Capitol. The Capitol will be closed to the general public during this exercise.

During the exercise, a safety perimeter will be maintained by the Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City sheriff’s deputies. There will be a presence of emergency vehicles from the Carson City area directly related and involved with the exercise.
