The town of Truckee and Truckee Roundhouse are putting on a fix-it clinic on Oct. 14 from 1-4pm.

This is an opportunity to learn how to disassemble, troubleshoot, and repair household items instead of throwing them away. This is a do-it-together, community based event. Expert coaches with supplies will be available to guide people through the repair process.

Bring clothing, textiles, electronics, appliances, bikes, jewelry, and household items needing repair. All ages are welcome.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District board is in need of a member.

Bob Rossi recently resigned. His term ends in December 2018.

Applications are being accepted until Oct. 18 at 5pm. People must live in the district, be a registered voter and at least 18 years old. Applications are available at the office off Highway 89 in Meyers.

The board will have a special meeting on Oct. 19 at 6pm to interview candidates and select the person.

·      The Minden Library is showing “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (rated PG) on Oct. 14 at 2pm in the meeting room. The movie and popcorn are free. 

·      Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s annual Blue Ribbon Awards event honoring excellence in business on the South Shore will be Nov. 9, 5:30-8:30pm at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The event recognizes businesses, organizations, and individuals for achievements, community contributions, and milestones. The $60 tickets are available online.

·      A U.S. Ski & Snowboard proposal to the International Ski Federation to permit Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn to ski against the men was reviewed in a preliminary meeting of the FIS Alpine executive board Oct. 3 in Zurich. Given that the proposal was for the 2018-19 season, the board opted to table the motion until it meets again next May.

·      Liberty Utilities is scheduled an outage on Oct. 6 from 9 am-5 pm in the Squaw Valley/Olympic Valley area along Squaw Valley Road and Christy Lane. Crews will be replacing the pad mount transformer. 

American Legion Post 795 and the American Legion Auxiliary of South Lake Tahoe are having a community toy event Oct. 7 beginning at noon at the American Legion Hall.

Bring new unwrapped toys or non-perishable food items that will be distributed by Christmas Cheer to local families in need during the Christmas holiday.

The event will be held in combination with Oktoberfest at the American Legion Hall. Oktoberfest food will be available for purchase for $10 per person. There will be a raffle and live music.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is putting on a workshop titled sales secrets.

The goal is to improve sales skills to drive higher revenue.

The cost for the Level Up Workshop is $10 for chamber members and $20 for others.

The event is Oct. 18 from noon-1:30pm at the chamber office in Stateline.

• South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is having its annual open house at all stations on Oct. 14 from 10am-2pm.
• There will be a community meeting in the student union at South Tahoe High School on Oct. 4 at 5:30pm to envision student-centered learning and qualities of Viking graduates.
• The left turns at 5 Mile Road and the first two Carson Road exits will be closed from 10am-3pm the weekends of 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 to deal with Apple Hill traffic on the West Slope of El Dorado County.
• The Minden Library’s Spooktacular Halloween Party will be 30 from 3:30 to 5:30pm.The event is for children ages 4-11. It will include games, stories, and snacks. Wear a Halloween costume.
• The Business Council awarded Edgewood Tahoe the tourism and hospitality Spotlight Award, while Alpen Sierra Coffee earned the entrepreneur award.

Live Violence Free is going purple month in recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness month.

There will be a purple parade on Oct. 12. Decorate yourself, bike or skateboard. Meet at the corner of Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard at 5:30pm. The parade begins at 6pm. It will end at McP’s near Stateline, where there will be a purple party.

The party begins at 6:30pm. Even non-parade participants are welcome. Cost is $15. Purple drinks will be served.

·      South Lake Tahoe’s pool will be closed Oct. 3 for maintenance and to put the bubble up.

·      On Oct. 21 Mojo Green, the seven-piece horn driven soul funk band, comes to Hard Rock Lake Tahoe’s Vinyl showroom. Show starts at 9pm. Tickets are $10. The full ticket price will go to support Pinktober to fight breast cancer.

·      Placer County supervisors on Oct. 3 are expected to take action on a proposed zoning text amendment for secondary dwelling units. The goal is to help increase housing options for Placer residents. The meeting is in Auburn.

·      Sugar Pine Foundation supporters climbed 12 sugar pines and one Western white pines to collect about 20 pounds of seed. Half of the seeds go to the U.S. Forest Service for reforestation and half to the nonprofit.

Liberty Utilities will host two workshops this week to provide information about reliability issues within its service territory and, plans and progress made to improve service reliability.

The meetings are:

• Oct. 3, 10-11am, North Tahoe Event Center, Kings Beach
• Oct. 6, 1:30-2:30pm, Walker Community Center, Coleville.

These meetings are similar to the ones conducted earlier this year.

The California Public Utilities Commission requires investor-owned utilities like Liberty Utilities to annually post the two worst-performing circuits as measured by the industry standard System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI).

For 2016, the two worst-performing circuits were:

• Topaz 1261 at 1,338 customer outage minutes (serves the Coleville and Walker communities)
• Squaw Valley 7201 at 1,030 customer outage minutes (serves the North Tahoe area).

·      Tahoe Transportation District is having a meeting about the loop road on Oct. 5 from 5-7pm at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. The public is being asked to weigh in on the project’s design elements.

·      Expect to see more kids in Nevada walking on Oct. 4 in honor of recognition of International Walk to School Day.

·      Rittz plus Sam Lachow, Eric Biddiness, and Sewer Crew will be part of the Strange Music Halloween Party at Whiskey Dicks in South Lake Tahoe on Oct. 31. Doors open at 9pm. Must be 21. Advance tickets are $25 at The Spot and Whiskey Dicks in South Lake Tahoe.
