The Nevada Division of Forestry will start burning slash piles in the North Canyon area east of Carson City beginning Nov. 26, weather permitting.

Upon completion of the North Canyon project, forestry crews will conduct pile burning at Sand Harbor, Slaughterhouse Canyon and the Van Sickle unit at South Lake Tahoe.

The burning will continue through March.

The Nevada Division of Forestry implements forest restoration and fuel reduction projects on about 300 acres annually within Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park funded through the environmental improvement program.

The final public workshop of the draft groundwater management plan groundwater model for the Martis Valley will be Nov. 29 from 5-7pm.

The Truckee Donner Public Utility District, Northstar Community Services District, and Placer County Water Agency have partnered to develop the plan.

The workshop will be at Truckee Donner Public Utility District’s board room, 11570 Donner Pass Road, Truckee.

The next steps are formal adoption of the Groundwater Management Plan by each partner agency and to begin implementation of the GMP.

Diamond Peak Ski Area in Incline Village is seeking another 10-year special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service.

No significant improvements are located on the permitted land, although grooming, hazard tree removal, and snowmaking are allowed.

Comments are being sought on the draft decision memo. Only those who provided comment during the original spring comment period are eligible to comment now.

Comments will be taken until mid-December.

The black and white photo (circa 1952) shows how the melding of highways 50 and 89 in Tahoe Valley formed a three-way Y intersection.

The camera is on Highway 89, coming from Camp Richardson, looking at where 89 joined Highway 50 from Stateline (left) going (right) to Meyers.

According to longtime local (since 1940s) Dave Wakeman, the Tahoe Trading Post was owned by John Phillipson, who was also the local postmaster. The building at the left was Nevada Lumber Company. To the right of the photo was a two-pump 76 gas station and Lampson’s Market, post office, and bank. Factory Stores at the Y essentially cover this area now.

The color photo shows today’s four-way intersection there, as Lake Tahoe Boulevard (lower-right in photo) was forged by the Martin Brothers and partners in the early 1960s and Caltrans used its property rights to enlarge the entire intersection.

About the only thing similar between these two photos is the distant mountain profile of what became Heavenly Valley.

Two veteran officers will join the South Lake Tahoe Police Department on Monday.

Jason Cheney and Kevin Whalen will be sworn in Nov. 26 at 11am at the department.

Cheney has been a peace officer in California for more 11 years; mostly recently with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department.

Each officer is married and both have two children.

The Nevada Division of State Lands is offering grants for projects that will preserve and restore the natural environment of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Approximately $350,000 generated from the purchase of Nevada Lake Tahoe license plates will be available to public agencies seeking funding. Proposals which include the implementation of capital improvement projects that further the attainment of the TRPA Environmental Thresholds will be prioritized in this funding cycle.

Those receiving funding will be notified in May.

The deadline to apply to be on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee has been extended to Dec. 28

There will be seven vacancies as of Jan. 31.

The following reps are needed:

· A person active in a senior citizens’ organization.

· A person active in a bona fide taxpayers’ association.

· A person active in the South Tahoe Association of Realtors.

· An at-large member of the community.

· A parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district.

· A parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district and active in a parent-teacher organization or school site council.

· A person active in the construction industry in South Lake Tahoe.

Candidates must be at least 18 and reside within the district’s boundaries. Employees, officials, vendors, contractors, or consultants of the district are ineligible.
