Interns would be working through Lake Tahoe Community College.

There will be a candlelight vigil Dec. 15 at 5pm at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe (near the base of the gondola) to mourn for the lives lost in Connecticut, and to stand for a peaceful world free of violence for all children.

The event is being hosted by Small World.

In an effort to identify impaired drivers who may get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol, additional Nevada Highway Patrol troopers, as well as a multi-agency DUI checkpoint, are being scheduled this month.

With a federally funded Joining Forces grant secured by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, NHP will schedule and staff additional troopers to patrol Northern Nevada highways on the weekends of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22.

• The Fields Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will meet Dec. 17 from 4–6pm at Lake Tahoe Airport.

Douglas County library is having a Winter Lego Building Challenge.

Use Legos to create a winter themed work of art. Bring the creation to the Minden or Zephyr Cove library between Dec. 15 and noon Jan. 3.

Lego prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winner in each age category. Children and adults may participate; one entry per person. Children 2-3 must use Duplo bricks.

Winners will be announced Jan. 15.

The challenge is sponsored by the Friends of Douglas County Library.

Friends of the California State Fair is offering scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year to California college students and graduating high school students. Applications, which are online, are due March 8.

This year, 27 scholarships will be awarded in the following areas: agriculture, animal science, arts, business, culinary, education, enology, event planning, fair industry, international studies, teaching credential program, viticulture, and past exhibitors to the California State Fair.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of personal commitment, goals established for their chosen field, leadership potential and civic accomplishments. All applicants are also eligible for the Ironstone Concours d’ Elegance $5,000 outstanding candidate scholarship.

South Lake Tahoe therapist Ray Goodenough on Dec. 13 at 4pm will sign the book he co-authored with his daughter.

Goodenough and Kathy Rem just published “Parallel Journeys”. After 33 years of separation, the two were reunited. In this book they compare stories and parallel journey.

The signing is at the Center for Higher Learning at 2048 Dunlap Drive in South Lake Tahoe.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is collecting canned food to the Food Bank of El Dorado County.

Titled CANucopia, Sierra is encouraging guests to bring canned non-perishable foods such as soup, pasta, crackers, and pasta sauce to the collection bin located at the base of the mountain next to the season pass office until Jan. 12.

Sierra will motivate guests to bring canned food with the incentive of getting the resort’s general manager, John Rice, to participate in a variety of activities based on volume goals. If guests fill up one bin before Dec. 23, Rice will sing and play holiday carols at Sierra Resort on Christmas Eve. If two bins are collected by Jan. 1, kids in the Wild Mountain Children’s Center will get to throw pies at Rice. If three bins are filled by Jan. 12, Rice will allow customers the opportunity to hit a target and submerge him in a dunk tank.

According to Feeding America’s 2011 Map the Meal Gap study, 15.26 percent of El Dorado County, or 27,850 individuals are food insecure. Food insecurity is the USDA’s measure for lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County provides food assistance on a daily basis to more than 40 local emergency food response agencies, including battered women’s shelters, senior centers, local food pantries, under privileged youth programs, youth shelters, soup kitchens, maternity homes, and more.
