The public on Oct. 24 will have the opportunity to review, and provide comments and feedback on the initial design concept for the proposed renovation of the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach.

North Tahoe Public Utility District and Laulima reps will be at the 5:30-7:30pm meeting. Laulima is taking over the lease of the center.

The initial design concept is also online. 

Comments will be collected and forwarded to LKBEC representatives. Questions or comments relating to the permitting process or future operation of the Event Center cannot be answered at this time.

Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz has set up a program to give back to the communities where his company does business, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

This is a personal contribution, not from the Colorado-based company.

Katz, according to a press release, has established a donor-advised charitable giving vehicle that will be funded from the shares and proceeds he will receive from exercising Vail Resorts share appreciation rights (SARs) that are approaching their 10-year expiration date.

These assets that are expected to total approximately $58 million,will make grants over a long-term period based on the recommendations of Katz and his wife, Elana Amsterdam.

·      Adulting 101: Economic Empowerment is an event being put on by TRYP on Oct. 24 from 5:30-7:30pm at North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach. ·      Glazed and Confuzed Tahoe Donut on Nov. 1 will begin operating out of Sidelines Sports Pub at Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe for morning coffee and doughnuts.

·      As part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s hazardous fuels reduction efforts, both Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts’ fire crews will begin pile burning starting in October 2017 through May 2018, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has received a $65,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to participate in joining forces traffic safety campaigns during the coming year.

This is a multi-jurisdictional statewide effort to increase safety on Nevada’s roads by increasing enforcement and awareness of traffic laws.  The goal is to reduce crashes and saves lives by focusing on impaired driving, distracted driving, seat belts, speed and pedestrian safety.

The money will be used from now through next September on beefed up enforcement.

·      Construction has started on a 3,000-square-foot restaurant and pavilion at Round Hill Pines Resort. It should be open in 2018. The old structure has been demolished.

Dave Borges, local historian, will give a talk Oct. 14 about the urbanization of Lake Tahoe from the 1930s to today. His talk will include road development, city government, general improvement districts, water and South Tahoe Public Utility District.

This event is part of the October AAUW general meeting at 10:30am at Lake Tahoe Community College, Room A208. It is free and open to everyone.

Borges started giving Tahoe history talks as a teenager while driving horses for his father ’s sleigh rides. He also told Tahoe history stories while working on the Tahoe Queen in the early 1970s and began giving Tahoe history lectures in 1986 to service organizations.

·      Truckee Town Council on Oct. 20 will review a proposal to use funds generated by SB1 for the 2018 slurry seal project.

·      Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association recognized the Tahoe-Truckee Plug-In Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan with awards for most outstanding plan and most outstanding public outreach. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Truckee Donner Public Utility District released the plug-in electric vehicle plan earlier this year.

·      Kiplinger’s annual list of most and least tax friendly states has Nevada as fifth friendliest and California eighth most unfriendly.

·      Douglas County libraries in Minden and Zephyr Cove will be closed Oct. 16-18 for the Nevada Library Association and Mountain Plains Library Association Joint Conference.

Kathleen Shoda, vice president and recently appointed general manager for Resorts West, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Ridge Resorts and the on-site Resorts West profit centers.
