The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has received a $35,000 award from the FBI to cover overtime costs related to the sheriff’s Cyber Crimes Unit and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The FBI award enhances the ability of detectives to timely investigate crimes against children on the Internet.

Divided Sky in Meyers is hosting a fundraiser for Tahoe Adaptive Competition Center on Jan. 12.

The money raised will help subsidize the three-day rider camp at the end of the month at Sierra-at-Tahoe. The snowboarders are from the U.S. and other countries who have hopes of making it to the 2014 Paralympics Games in Sochi, Russia.

The event starts at 7pm.

A disc jockey will provide music and merchandise will be for sale. There is not cost to be part of the fun, but donations are accepted and raffle tickets will be sold.

Local Olympic historian David Antonucci will lead a walking tour of the 1960 Winter Olympics site in Squaw Valley as part of the 2013 North Lake Tahoe Olympic Heritage Celebration.

A few of the sites are the Olympic Village Lodge (athlete’s housing), California and Nevada Welcome Centers, as well as race courses, the site of Blyth Arena, ski jump hill remnants, IBM computer building, media center, and other historic sites.

The event is free. Meet at the information kiosk in front of the tram.

The iconic Swiss Chalet restaurant will remain closed for several more months.

When reached last fall, owner Peter Baumann told Lake Tahoe News the South Lake Tahoe restaurant would reopen Dec. 12. That didn’t happen. On Jan. 7, he told LTN it will open in the summer.

He said personal reasons are keeping the restaurant closed.

While there is a for sale sign on the property, Baumann said it is for the center. Asked if the restaurant is for sale, he said, “I can’t disclose that right now.”

The center has been on the market since last spring.

As we have seen in recent years, large amounts of snow can be potentially dangerous if we do not take certain precautions.

The fire department would like to encourage all South Lake Tahoe residents to clear snow away from natural gas meters and propane regulators in the event they become buried.

You can avoid a deadly catastrophe by clearly marking all gas meters and regulators and maintaining their access during periods of large snow accumulations.

For the past five years, it has been a holiday tradition for the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce to give back with a Business After Hours Mixer.

Every holiday season the chamber hosts its Holiday Mixer to give back to those less fortunate in the community. This year’s event is Jan. 10 from 5:30-8:30pm at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe. Beneficiaries are Christmas Cheer and Bread & Broth. Bring canned and non-perishable food items to donate. For each item you bring, you will earn extra raffle tickets. Event proceeds will be split between the two food banks.

Tickets are only $10 for members or $20 for prospective members, and include food prepared by Riva Grill, one drink and raffle tickets.
